As Mark said, a good rider on a dirt bike would piss up it. You need lots of suspension and momentum.
With our type of bikes, you need a little bit of luck. You have to pick your track carefully and zigzag up the clear sections. One mistake, and you end up amongst the big rocks, drop to the seat, and risk flipping or getting spat off the side of the track.
Gimme another go...........
bart that sounds very like you are in control. Surely if you just nail it at the bottom you will (should) end up at the top somehow or other.

Few blind corners on the way up. Not easy to pick a track. After half a dozen runs you'd have the track memorized, if you still had the energy left.
By the way, I broke my screen with my chest (no not my beer belly). I was leaning over the bars that far.
Not trying to put anyone off. When's the next attempt.

when are you going to come on a ride Merv - its seems like ages.
Yeah been busy wrapping up my Bro's estate so haven't been around much, its so bad our bikes are all running out of WOF's so might take a couple in this week. However, weeks ahead aren't much better getting tied up with rellies, then off to UK/Europe again to catch up with daughter in Zurich.
However, if you showed me the pics of the waitress I might have reason to change my plans.

I have been both up and down this on the Pampera a few years ago. It was badly rutted in places but unless it has deteriorated markedly I do not recall it being as steep or loose as CNUT hill appears.
Very markedly...
It's the large loose rocks that spoil it.

Ooh that's a nasty lookin bit of track mate! Bit of practice makin vicious directional changes at speed ( ;) ) on that will do ya nicely for a Cnut Hill attempt when the Norf Island Invasion Ride happens(?????) OR maybe we'll add SutherlandsHut/Cnut Hill into the SCAR2 in Feb!!!!

Now if someone would attach a grader blade to their bike to groom the slope, those of us with 15T fronts and worn rear tyres (and pink undies LOL!) could head up too!

I'm assuming that its too wet to go down the staircase - I didn't think the rock garden would have been affected by rain too much???? (I've never been down the staircase and only part way down/up the rock garden)

The Rock Garden and Devils Staircase are pretty much as their name suggests. Lots of short sharp drop offs. Plenty of bolders. Half way down the Rock Garden you'll be wondering what the hell you've got youself into. When you come back up, these magical little tracks will appear off to the side of the track and aid you in getting up. It's not as bad as it looks.
The Devils Staircase is papa clay instead of rocks. I would only try this in mid summer when it's real dry. I've been up a little way from the bottom, and down about half way from the top. This is on my 'to do' list.:woohoo:
Compared to Cnut.......the Rock Garden is a lot of short sharp technical bits, with small breathers in between. Cnut is more like 90 seconds of wind on the throttle and see what happens. No breathers. You could fluke a good run and make it.:gob:
Have a go. You'll gain more skills in half an hour of riding in that area, than you would in six months of riding to Toppies and back.:innocent:

I'd heard a rumour about an alternate route up the Devils Staircase side. Me and a mate spent about an hour riding up and down the riverbed looking for it, but all the tracks we found were dead ends. Certainly worth looking into if you have time.
I am so tempted to throw the knobs on the DRZ and come down for a look. Shame the bike's all nice and shiny, and I can't be buggered cleaning it again.

Grand day out in the Akatarawas courtesy of Mark S. Rode the Pampera out from Wellington via a stop at the Paekakariki Cafe to get wired up with the help of an espresso. Mark and his son Glenn were already busy unloading at the Maungakotukutuku car park at 1045. The promised Andy Mac on his new WR250R, was late but leaving with no sign of him yet at 1115 we knew he would catch us up before long, which he did.
Weather was cool and overcast but the clouds lifted and it warmed up as the day progressed.
There was some very slippery stuff, loose hills and ruts, but we made it to the Rock Garden by 1.30. That clay must have oil in it in some spots! Unfortunately after dropping down two of the steps we began to wonder if we would be able to return the way we had come. The only exit from the bottom of the Rock Garden is to climb the slippery Devil's Staircase or return the way you came. Mark sent Glenn down the third drop off to see what it was like coming back up (that is what 20 year olds on MX bikes are for) but a general decision was reached that, due to a lack of intestinal fortitude, that was enough for today - perhaps in summer!
We parted at Price's Flat. I turned left and exited via Karapoti while Glen, Andy and Mark headed back whence we had come that morning.
160 km on a 250 Pampera's seat has left me tired but satisfied. Thanks for a great day out guys.
1. Andy's new WR250
2. One of many rests - this one on Pram Track above Price's Flat
3. Mark and the third drop off (The Hillary Step?) at the Rock Garden
4. Sizing up the third drop off - Glenn's the only one to try this one
5. Straightening Glen's handlebars after leaving the Rock Garden - getting back up that step was not completely trouble free!

The ride from Karapoti to the top of the Rock Garden is awesome and doable by bigger adv bikes. I will organize something when things dry out a bit. Easily in the class of Sutherlands Hut etc. Paraparaumu - Rock Garden - Paraparaumu took 5 hours so it could be a full day on a bigger bike. Woohooo :Punk:
We'll also organize a proper Paraparaumu - Devils Staircase - Rock Garden - Karapoti - Paraparaumu loop for the smaller bikes when its a bit dryer

Dave,
We did not get anywhere near Devil's Staircase.
Generally the Deadwood Road is similar in its characteristics to the Pram Track. Not so much of the unusually slippery clay you find in places on the Pram Track. Some areas are actually in and under regenerating bush and there are areas of good gravel road or track near Price’s Flat (where the Karapoti Road comes in). Some very wet areas but again not as slippery as Pram Track. However there are some loose and steep slopes at the Rock Garden end of the road – enough to require I focus a bit even on the Pampera. Overall nothing harder than Odlin’s Road I would say. Once you get to the Rock Garden it is another story, this has some technical challenges requiring some level of skill but more importantly some confidence. My bike could have easily dealt with going up the steps we came across by approaching them at a running speed with a light throttle opening, it was the rider - still feeling sore from the last time he hit the ground hard 3 months ago - who was lacking (courage!) in this. Perhaps next time.

Joe - does this work for you?
If so would you be able to sort out a key?
Plan being to come in from the coast. Go down cnut and for the hard boys to come back up and possibly exit via the coast again?
I do believe bigger bikes may struggle going down cnut (I wouldn't take the klr down there) so maybe the bigger bikes may want to turn around at the top of cnut and return to coast?

Sunday 18th
prolly meet at Toppy's at 9.30?
we'll have to come up with 2 options
1/ if we get the key - in which case we can go in from the coast
2/ if we can't get the key - in which case we'll go in from Sutherlands hut.
I'm quite comfortable with option 2 as IF we get up the top of Cnut we can ride to the coast and then retrace our steps - which makes for much less road miles than looping out to the coast and coming through the gate back in.
That is a fairly big IF though.
I'll prolly leave Pram about 8ish and go via the Aka's (resisting the strong temptation to turn left at the summit)
I did some pre-ride hill climbing testing on the DT yesterday....

lets assume at this stage that Joe wont be able to get a key (he hopefully will be bikeless by then)
So, unless someone can come up with something better how about the following as a loose plan.
Meet at Toppys at 9.30 Sunday for a leisurely coffee and perv.
Head in to Sutherlands Hut and maybe chomp a sandwich there (The stream might be up a bit which will add to the fun)
Blast up cnut
Ride out to the locked gate at the coast
Retrace our steps and have more coffee at Toppys
If we can't get up the hill we can faff around on some of the side tracks near Sutherlands Hut.
So whos coming??

Just playing around with google thingy.
This is a rough idea of how steep this bloody thing is. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like about 160 metres of elevation in just over 400 metres. This is with a loose rock surface, and after a steep climb of about 300m from the riverbed. :gob:

I had better enjoy this one because in the future it is going to cost just a touch over $5000 per year to register my motorcycles (and scooter).
The levy increases proposed are for the ACC component only, add the other levies and then add GST:
126 - 600 cc bike = $612.33 to register
601 and over $875.96
Perhaps I will bring my own eats and wait for the rest of you outside Toppy's.

Should be - perhaps viewing is restricted to "friends" or something.
1982 RD350LC (bought in 1985 when I was exactly half my current age - only transport for a number of years - can't believe we went all over the place two up with tank bag and throwover panniers!)
1982 BMW R100CS - as a trusted long term R bike owner I was told to buy it a year ago by the local BMW mechanic, as it needed rescuing - looks cosmetically rough but best running flat twin I have ever owned and complete right down to the OEM tyre pump and locking cable.
1992 BMW R100RS
1996 DR350SE - "Merv's" late bro's
2003 Gas Gas Pampera 250 - bought new
2007 BMW F650GSD (my second)
2007 Vespa GTS250ie bought new and used pretty much every day.
For me personally view five bikes is really the absolute max (less better) and I am a bit embarrassed with seven, but the opportunity with the DR and being "required" to buy the CS put me over at the start of 2009 and I cannot agree with myself which two to sell.
About half the value of the fleet is made up by the two 2007 machines and totals only about what a reasonably fancy Ducati would cost, but when you get over five the work of keeping up on services goes beyond being enjoyable and you don't use them enough to "bond". I should really sell the two R bikes but...........
Still there are people around the world as I write with much tougher decisions to make than what consumer durable to sell - like "where is my next meal coming from?"
Pampera is in the van ready for CNUT - got soaked in a thundery downpour that arrived when it was half in and half out! Still, harsh language sorted that one out. I wonder if we will even get through the streams to the hut (he says hoping he gets a chance to bottle out with honour before we stand facing the Hillary Step!).

I'd rather keep things a bit earlier, as I'll have a 2 hour ride home. If we actually get to the top of the hill, it looks like a bloody long way out to the coast.

Pretty wet going over the Rimutaka's, & SLOW, given new, non-scrubbed knobbies.
Met MarkS, AndyMac & friend, Gav, Pamera, & Bart at Toppy's. Sat there for a while to allow the weather to improve, which it really didn't.
Out to the end of the Rd, still drizzling, riverlets going down the track, a bit slippy. The 1st river crossing was v.high, but we all got thru. The second had a tree down & that was that. Back up the track.
Had a look down Clay Rd, dead end. Back to Toppy's, who were closing. Round the cnr to Medicis & sat & drank lattes & chewed the fat about the coming 42/Fishers/Whanga Rd trip, then splashed across the Rimutakas to home.
Good trip & company, just disappointing the weather beat us a little. :weep:.

how about a rerun sometime middleish/late November?
If the sun comes out maybe even the pussies will join us?
Absolutely tremendous shot BART - you are a lens god.
Keen for another try. Suggest we avoid
1) any wet weekend (!)
2) 14/15th November. 14th is WW1 aircraft flying display at Masterton (I want to go) and 15th is Toast Martinborough (facilities will be somewhat under pressure!)
Enjoyed Sunday regardless of the rain and the failure to get as far as planned. Still, as I said on Sunday, in a parallel universe I had my folding saw, we made it past the downed willow tree and we got benighted on the other side of some raging torrent (rather than enjoying an espresso in a nice warm cafe)

Cheers guys. I work on the theory that for every 100 shots, you have to fluke a couple of good ones. I had to delete a heap because of water on the lens. Amazingly, the camera still works.
Bigger versions under 'Sutherlands 18-10-09' in 'Bart's photos' (my signature thing down below). Keep clicking on the photo you want until it blows it up real big. I'll chuck a few more in there too.

Of our group - Bart got his DR to the top with Joe pushing. I got my DT to the top with lots of offs and push starts from Andy and Andy rode to the top all the way without stopping making it look easy on his WR250
Anything on the other side? can you ride out that way?
There is an awesome ride out to the coast - simply brilliant - return time is about an hour and a half
I think you'd have a reasonable chance of getting up but you would probably need to lower the gearing on the KLR and have a decent knobbly.

You do realise that that would confirm your standing as trailer trash? Thereby make any potentially successful summit as ineligible in the Adventure Biking Rolls Of Honour, ie as counting as an adventure bike summit? Bikes must be ridden to the event! In some ways it's a relief. I've been thinking for the last couple of weeks that the gearbox was on its way out. Massive crunch on down changes, and would slip to neutral from second if the upchange wasn't clean. I didn't think to check the clutch cable as the clutch operated smoothly.

My DR has always done that strange jump back to neutral out of 2nd from new, especially in trainers/shoes as the lever doesnt get quite as much of a shove that they do in MX boots. Its particularly embarassing pulling away from the lights - especially with that loud pipe when the revs suddenly go mental!
Where along the cable did yours snap - lever end or at the actuating arm? -or even somewhere in between? Gonna check mine now, maybe they come with a half snapped cable from new...
Anyway the rest of you, stories from 'the Hill'....

OK, so the finding neutral thing may be normal. It only seems to happen when commuting to work, so you may be right about the shoe thing.
The cable broke at the lever where the ball thing attaches. I just remembered that I've been using a DRZ400 clutch lever for the last 4 months. There may be a slight difference in the pull angle? I'd better check it out.

A friend had the cable on his DR650 break at the same point not too long ago*. I would guess that the barrel nipple was not rotating in the hole as the lever was operated, so flexing the cable at that point . The nipple is a fairly close fit in the hole, wouldn't take too uch dirt to jam it tight
*try and buy a DR650 clutch cable in Reefton on a Saturday night... he did a fast and clutchless run through to the Coast the next morning, found a bike shop which was open and the guy repaired the cable, including turning up a new barrel nipple on the lathe.

Bart you missed an opportunity to reach ultimate legend status if you had made it up cnut with no clutch.
KLR does that jumping back into neutral thing too. Often when in second gear and relying heavily on the engine braking when coming into a downhill corner too fast. Scary.
Did anyone get up???

I heard there was some myth [and I do emphasise "myth"] that a Beemer 1200 got up there. I would drink a nice hot cup of my own piss if a 1200 could get up that track without Travis Pastrana riding it.
I am not a safari rider or MXer but I will put my balls out and say that there is no fucken way a 1200 tank got up that track as it is now. Maybe back when it was maintained a few years back, but not now.
The Africa ain't a small bike but it aint a behemoth either. I might have come close, but after three attempts and a pile of broken bits starting to mount up I conceded defeat.

Piece of Piss - although I suspect Matt was pretty knackered from assisting my attempt
Fortunately there were no cameras around when I looped the DT and pretzelled the rack and indicators etc....

a credit to you buggs. to get ya beast that far up, in the old days the track never went that way, but instead went around the face of the hill about where mark stopped at the start of his vid, a large slip took the track away, so a bully was brought in to reline the track straight down so to speak..
on ya chaps for having another go at the cnut..

WOW what a blast some serious fun was had and a cracker of a day to, pitty i was running an almost fully onroad tyre but was very amazed how far it took me, before i new it i was on the crazy hill climb with no turning back i could see buggs way up in the distance and his bike ditched on the track, i just opened the throttle and tryed to hang on best i could and ended up about four metres away from buggs that was it for me i knew that it was about as good as it gets with my back tyre.
I take my hat off to buggs he really gave it very thing on the vtwin beast it was hammering up there. Also credit to Marks for not giving up and getting there in the end.
Great fun riding with all you guys i will be looking forward to the next one.
