Looking at the vid I was wondering " why isn't the bike moving -it doesn't look that bad???"
Then I saw Matt(?) standing on a lean & realised yep that there's a hill alright.
Looks like one of those ones where common sense gets left at the bottom. Well done guys.

Nice one guys. When's the next attempt? Hopefully I can make it to the start next time.
Speaking of clutches, how's that DT's one still working? Looks like it had a hammering.

Nice one guys. When's the next attempt? Hopefully I can make it to the start next time.
Speaking of clutches, how's that DT's one still working? Looks like it had a hammering.
Even if we don't do cnut there is a bitching hillclimb (mud/grass - knobbies only) up the other side and some hunters told us about a track that is acessed by going 100m up the river so we could easily spend a day in there - I'm keen
I do wonder about the level of abuse Cnut makes you dish out to your bike - the DT was pissing out coolant while the over temp light flashed like crazy - I burnt my foot on the engine cases through my boots - so it was pretty hot. The clutch stayed working but is now engaging at the very end of its travel. I had to rebuild my rack today and glue indicators back together etc (the DT has been completely over both forwards and backwards on Cnut now)
What would a rekluse on the DT been like on this stuff Marks? Any better?
The big problem with the DT is to avoid bogging you have to give it a fist full which means you either start to loop or you wheelspin - so maybe by giving you very consistent/accurate engagement the Rekluse might help you ride the thin line between wheelspin and wheelstands - pity they don't make one for the DT
I'm sure a really good rider would make it look much easier but its right at the outer edge of my bike skills...

Great ride reports Mark, the photos on Advrider are superb.
You owe Matt many beers for pushing you up that hill! And the DT deserves a oil change too.
I reckon the lower hill where the KTM stalled is steepest but has reasonable traction, whereas at the top traction is marginal on the Scree of Despair.

Your record is still intact Andy - sole unassisted/nonstop ascent of Cnut on a road registered adv bike - should get a cup made
Yes - Matt worked pretty hard getting me started again ... and again and...
And Yes the DT deserves a gbox oil change after the way it was abused...
Sorry I was too knackered/sore to do the Link Track on Sunday - how about aiming for Sunday 2nd May?

So a quick report on the KTM, which misbehaved over the weekend. The starter motor brushes have died. The battery is also toast. So hopefully with both those repaired/ replaced, we'll be mobile again. Haven't got a flywheel puller to look at the starter clutch, which also may have issues. Fingers crossed.

That hill certainly looks like a cnut.
From memory of the old xr days, you gotta stand up asap!
Leaning forward, back, all over the place..., jumping up & down on the pegs to get more weight on the back wheel, lol.
Well done all. Enjoyed the coverage.
Looks like some serious fun :)

As promised, a picture of CNUT from the air. Sorry it is terrible, one hand through a curved canopy and with a low wing in the way, but it does prove I went up"!
Also a quick shot showing the damage JMJ has done to the Rimutuka Road.
Pampera is loaded in Thunderbird 2 and ready to head for Raglan ride tomorrow."

personally I think you were certifiable for even attempting the hill on that whale

There is supposed to be another way up the top of cnut and last time I was there we found another absolute prick of a climb to fall off on (you can look down on cnut from the top).
I'm keen to head in and make a decent day of exploring the different options.
suggestions for dates?

If you carry on past the hut the track continues, I did one stream crossing but stopped at the next one as at the time it was deeper with a steeper exit than I was prepared to try alone on the 800.

as far as the legend goes...thats the only track up the hill..
in the old days the hutt was the original farm house for the valley..
in the old days the track that goes past the hutt down to and follows the river, used to continue along the river and come out on the whakatomotomo road.

The river crossing I stopped at was very well formed, as if quads or maybe even 4x4's were using it, giving me the impression it was worth carrying on.
junkmanjoe
11th September 2010, 21:46
more than likley over time the river has washed parts or most of what was left of the track away.
there is how ever the old saw mill track which is down past the hutt... and makes it way back up the hill on the west side of the river.
also at the top of the entrance to southerlands track by the cattle stop, on the west side, is another old saw mill track, which is meant to meet up with the first saw mill track some how..
it be only small bike country up on the west side of the hills, but be good exploring in the summer months..

Last time we were there me and Marks had a look down past the hutt and found a fork heading up the hill on the other side overlooking the legendary hillclimb i think Marks has some pics of the view, i didnt make it up there it was a bit to slippery for the tyre i had on, we followed the track as far down as we could go but it just ran out at the river but could very well carry on over the other side.

According to Wises only to the edge of the Forest Park
According to Google Earth's roads overlay almost to Sutherlands, though on the pictures it doesn't look like there is a trail there.

anything would have been to slippery for that racing slick you had on.
looking east towards cnut hill (in the middle) from the top of the hill imediately to the west of the hut.
http://webcoda.com/images/bike/IMG_7301.jpg
if you go past the hut then cross the river and go downstrean 100-200m in the river there (apparently) is an exit that leads to a trail that suppoedly goes up to the track that goes out to the coast. Andy and I found what we think is the other end of that track last time we both got to the top of cnut and went out to the coast.
I have also been to the end of Whakatomotomo road and it ends in a big nasty locked gate. If you could get past that I suspect the track that goes to the top of the hill where I took the photo above might continue on and join up with it.

My measley little 30 year old 125 probably only putting out 15hp in its tired state will eventually slip on the rim - with rim locks! Give it heaps on MX tracks though. Tyre pressure around 14psi
Whilst the DR650 never seems to slip with around 4 times the power and no rim locks:blink: even giving it heaps through the mungies trying to set a new record for the Karapoti crossing:shit: Lowest pressure I've been brave enough to run is 18psi

We'll aim to get to toppys by 9.30 and leave about 9.45 as we will kill 30 minutes unloading and getting ready.

sooo whats the weather in the 'rapa like today???
tomorrows forecast is:
Morning showers clearing and becoming fine.
Strong gusty northwesterlies,
gale in exposed places.
if there has been much rain yesterday/today then I'm wondering if the ride is best left for another day as high river levels will possibly stop us searching for the alternate way up cnut plus the other hillclimb was quite steep greasy clay in places and may be not be doable.
I'm also a little concerned about taking the DT as today I discovered that when I looped it on Odlins I bent the front axle which can't be doing the forks much good...(I suppose I should check the forks for straightness too )

No Carnage, but unfortunately no camera either.
Sun shone, winds stayed down, tracks were dry, rivers (well streams) were low.
Much of the track has been made 4x4 friendly so it was a pretty quick blast in and out.:chase:
Way easier than last time I headed in there (but then again I was riding on a bald trailwing then) Definately a big bike friendly ride now.
Great local ride though - even if Cnut hill remains unconquered by an ADV bike...

if you go Id be keen to know what its like.Going in there next weekend there,s a couple of places that I wanna have a look down. I would of asked if it was ok to tag along with you guys today, but childrens sport rules today
Hi Bill, wonderful sunny weather today and the streams were no issue. It was greasy in places along the valley bottom. Went past the hut & up Mark's track on the north side of stream. This was an awesome climb & I was slipping around on a well worn knobbly. GT's Trailwing got no-where & he waited at the bottom. I didn't go to the end but thought it might link back to Haurangi Rd however a hunter said it is a dead end.
Then to Cnut. The very first climb is quite eroded by water runoff but GT perserved & got up (this was just his 2nd trail ride - I said come with me I know an easy track) The rest was bone dry and good traction. The top climb (Scree of Despair) is the same old, hard work. I got up on the 2nd attempt, but it wasn't pretty. Your 625SXC should cruise up.

What do you mean Gav? My ADV bike has 300 km range, pannier racks, Rego, WOF, even if it is just a little upstart 250 that can climb Cnut :bleh:

Thanks for that Andy, gunna lower the gearing, drop down off a few of the clear ridges and poke up the river beds, just an explore and get lost misson. Gotta a couple of mates who have capable bikes but dont take them out. So good on ya GT "go till there is no road, then go further"

Well here's the video proof that I got up with plenty of foot dabs. It was sorta disappointing to get to the top & not ride out to the coast, but GT had already waited around while I rode up the track on the other side of the stream - and he walked 1/2 way up it to check I hadn't gone over the side.
I used VLC to play the video but how do I save it into a format that I can use in Windows Movie Maker?

Total Video Converter will convert almot anything to almost anything.
It doesn't install heaps of crap on your pc either, you just save it to any directory and it runs from there.
