View Full Version : Hero Blobs - Good for fk all!?

Gutted, totally gutted.
Akaroa last Sunday. I needed to break in my new rear BT020. I went a little too fast on the way there and nearly high sided after my rear lost and then found grip - scary. So I slowed down.
On the way back however I was determined to roughen it up a bit. On a sharp right hander I slammed the bike down (no mean feat in itself for a 220+ Kilo bike) and in doing so the hero blob (peg) on my right side hit the deck, I quickly tucked in my knee (no kneesliders). I didn't mean to do this as I thought I'd grown out of this kind of riding. But hey - boosted my ego a notch anyway. Stopped in Little River, check peg, sweet. Nice and scratched. Not a problem, that's what they're designed for, right? There to protect the bike, right? To protect against scraping the fairing and exhaust, right? Wrong. Fkin wrong!!
I've just cleaned the bike and noticed a nice gauge/scrape along the right hand side of the front lower fairing. On closer examination it's plain to see that the lower fairing and the peg are pretty much in line with one another.
WHATS THE FKIN POINT IN HAVING PEGS!! :brick: :angry2:
I can’t take them off as this would just make matters worse for any future riding.
WT – How much for a freaking Hog?

U also need to remember that the pegs are spring loaded, so they can fold out the way.......how far did u'rs fold up b4 the body started hitting the road??, i scrape my pegs all the time but i have only decked the fairing once, so i think u may have gone over further than u think:niceone:
Dont do the hog thing.....its just not funny:nono:
coz i like havn a smk with ya at wrk but if ya buy a hog then:finger:

Honda share parts around models. Those pegs and blobs probably also have to go on CBRs.
*Blackbirds* are for boring old fat people who don't do things like lean over lots in corners.
Don't blame the design engineers. You're supposed to remember which market segment you're in.

Suck my purple warrior you bunch of inconsiderate arseholes. Don't you know when a man is hurting!?
Aaron - I honestly don't think my pegs came up high at all. But in the heat of the moment I guess you never know.
Kickaha and JR - you're both ugly bastards. I on the other hand can loose weight :shake:

THe fact that youre an inconsiderate bastard by slamming the bike on its side should tell you something, should be trying just to ease it over, as Aaron said the peg is spring loaded other wise you probably would have unloaded the rear tyre and probably crashed. DOC would have needed a team of volunteers to right the blue whale and ease it back into its rightful home.....

Jees Gav, I wish you were there to talk me through things, and I never new pegs were spring loaded. :brick:
Is this a state the obvious competition?
Slam over was a figure of speech. But thanks for the useless advice :brick:

Keep in mind suspension is set up with a 70 kg rider in mind.
With a pillion on my pillions pegs hit the deck before the riders pegs do.
Have you had your suspension set up for you? I did it made a world of difference. :wari:

Well on the bright side, you did not come off and I'm sure the faring could be repaired, but if you ask me, it adds to the character of the machine. Don't know if I'd do that with a Blackbird, but as I've never riden one, I dont know. :apint:

umm, sorry mate, didnt really mean it to read like that, so how hard did you grind the peg? It is surprising that you managed to scrape the fairing panel as well though if the peg feeler only kissed the road. Honda generally have the longest hero pegs known to man!

Just My two pence, but are not the Sport tourers like the BB and "Rox" have there pegs lower than the staight Sports bikes and therefore more likely to scape? By the way impressive lean angle on the BB if you scatched the fairrings, BB. One day I might be that brave (stupid?). Bit more skill before I could get close to matching that:not: . Maybe you will have to fit those "Skater Dude Wheels" to your side fairrings like the race riders do:Pokey:

It might be a function of the corner - like if it had any surface irregularities, or it was an uphill corner, the fairing may have touched momentarily before the 'hero blob' (assuming the peg didn't fold up).
You could install slightly longer 'hero blobs' if you wanted some earlier warning. My bike was missing one when I bought it, and I foolishly neglected to ask the shop to replace the missing one. I thought about just taking the other one off, but decided to replace it.
I went to a fastener shop, asked them what they had, but they didn't have anything like that. So I bought two chrome capnuts, two studs threaded at each end, and two nuts, and made my own for a total cost of $9 (as opposed to $17bazillion for OEM ones). They actually look better, as they're shinier and slightly longer.

Don't worry Gav. I guess I'm a bit sensitive about this as I don't really know why it happened. I knew I leaned over one hell of a lot, but I'm sure the pegs didn't come up, and if they did, it wasn't by much. The blob is pretty well ground though. Something I wanted to avoid on the Bird as I know it's what potential buyer look for, just to gauge how the bikes been riden.

You've made a good point here, and some sound advice on possibly extending the blobs. Although the corner was a downhill hairpin I think there was something odd about the camber on this streatch of the road. I do remember all the Akaroa die hard bikers talking about one tight corner where the camber appears to go the wrong way.
Aaron - ring any bells? I've heard you talk of such a corner a few times.
The blob certainly is long on the Bird. It has to be as the pipes are quite low down on it.
Lesson learnt, limitation of the bike (and myself?) now known.
Sulk over and on to the next ride to Akaroa this afternoon for some investigation.
Note to Biff - You're riding a Sports Tourer. You no longer own a sportsbike. Grow up.

I had the same thing happen on my CBR, the pipe got scratched and I was spewing as they hit at the same time.
So I removed the bolt and got a longer one[ only by 10mm ] , cut the hrad off and wound that in the hole and a couple of stainless acorn nuts and whacked that on.
Using stainless acorn nuts instead of chrome or anodised steel will stop them rusting when you do touch down and scratch them up. :niceone:
And when you go to sell it put new nuts on, nice and shiny stainless unscratched Mmmm

I was giving the Bandit it's post trip wash when I noticed the great chamfer job on the right hand peg. About 10 mm's of metal gone. I wish I could take credit but I can't.
Previous owner must ahve really liked righthanders.

No thanks, I wanted something that wouldnt disintegrate when the pegs hit the deck. :shake:

I haven't had the suspension setup, other than firming up the rebound myself. The problem I now have is that I've had a Givi Monolock system fitted, which makes it almost impossible to get at the rear suspension without removing a ton of scaffolding.

Ya wanna get some titanium bolts, good for some decent sparkie action. If your gonna grind your pegs at least some other people may notice!

That may be your problem mate -right there
Different world I know but on the hairpin at pukie I was lifting the back wheel off the ground with the belly of my fairing. We adjusted the rear shock a bit and it made a huge difference to how far I could lean.
Also as someone else said a mid corner dip could have dropped ya front end and caused that fairing scrape.

VTR used to grind the Exhaust Pipe that ran under the sump before the hero pegs touched down. Didn't notice it until someone mentioned it....nearly wore clear through before it was bought to my attention.
HB's are mainly to stop you hitting the leading edge of your slip on and lifting the back wheel off the ground.

Which corner are we talking about here BB? There's one about halfway down the main hill of the Little River side where the road drops steeply into the corner, so I guess it's that one. It feels crappy going either way. Some of these roading engineers need their heads reading, they seem to love putting down hill off camber bends in these days- bloody unsettling wether on the bike or in the car. The south side of the Hope Saddle betwixt Nelson and Murchison is a classic example.

That sounds like the one Tony. I went out there again on Friday. The corner is a right hander while going down hill not far short from the Little River 'straight'.

Nope - it's just a really nice ride. Besides, on the spur of the moment I don't know of anywhere else to go around these parts. The hills don't do it for me.
I'm open to suggestions....

Yeah, actually thats not a bad idea, must admit, I don't know of too many short decent rides either. Sometimes I really miss Nelson........

You have to be careful setting up your bike. Now I dont know the guy involved but Im sure someone on here does, and may know the story better.
He was a racer based in Hamilton who was setting up his fireblade for some track time. He took his missus for a ride and on the corners the engine turned out to be making contact. It eventually holed and leaked oil down the fairing and onto the back wheel. They crashed, and I think they were both killed. My guess is he had dropped the triples right down.
Real shame.
