View Full Version : The Bucket List.

Right here's the idea: (Unless its been done before)
Lets Create an index of bikes that can be used for bucket racing.
I have started roughing it out.
If we can get additions and a useful constructive blurb about each bike we can build it to quite a comprehensive list.
It could be a useful rescource to point newcomers towards so they have a better idea of what to look out for and what pros and cons come with each bike.
The more the merrier as far as opinions and contributions go so SPEAK UP!
We can debate things in the thread and when/if we reach a resonable conclusion I will edit the list.
If you dissagree with somthing on the list speak up and we can chage that too.

There is no such thing as a Derbi 80. Not that I've ever seen or read about (except as a competition 80 Cup track only bike). You can buy aftermarket kits to turn a 50 larger. See best 2 stroke thread re legality of that. . .

DRZ - off road "competition" bike - no lights etc. The Kawasaki KLX125 is a rebadged version of the same bike. Lots of go-less-slower bits available from the US - it is popular in Junior offroad and ministock racing there.
DR - Road legal trail/farm bike - lights etc
Both have the same motor. Which is also in GN/GS/GZ/DR/DF125, LT125 (with different Gearbox - LT is a Quad). DR/DF200 bits and pieces are also compatible to some degree (e.g. head).
I also have the vague recollection that some DR versions had a 6 speed box, compared to the 5 speed on the road bikes (GN/GS/GZ). Bayden might know (this is the motor he runs) and he mentioned something about the DR and GS versions being slightly different (casings a bit shorter on one version).

The only issue is while being a stunning looking machine and l/c plus fuel injected, it's only an SOHC undersquare motor.
The R15 is the same (ish) but a 149cc.
Specs for the R15

With that stroke it's never going to rev like the FXR but I would suspect there is plenty of room for extra HP all the same. I suspect that the HP figure is measured at the rear wheel...... As opposed to the FXR official figures which are measured at the crank and rounded up.....
The really interesting thing is the size, weight and frame design, it's considerably smaller and 20kg lighter than it's competitors. Delta Box and link rear end should equal better handling than the FXR and CBR. Couple that with the torque possible with a longer stroke and this potentially points toward great performance out of the box on kart tracks. Who knows what would happen at Ruapuna or Taupo? I suspect it would get eaten by TZ350 or Nigel Duff's 2 smokers........
There is a lot of talk from Yamaha about less transmission losses with this bike so that sounds interesting also.....

rule 24-2-4 engines must de derived from non competition motorcycles.
if you feel they arent competition then buy one, if somebody disagrees they stump up $100 if they are right they get their money back, and you go look for another bike, if they wrong they loose the money. simple system for clearing up the grey areas.

They're run in some of the Junior Motocross classes in NZ. And that it what the bike was designed for - introduction to off-road sport/competition riding. But it is a moot point really, as it is the SAME engine in the DR, DF, GN, GS, GZ non-competition bikes. So, it isn't a competition derived engine as far as I can see, but it is used in a bike designed for competition!

What do you mean "surely this is what buckets are to road racing". If you mean Buckets are an introduction to Road Racing you would be in the enlightened minority.

There are many who view Buckets as a distraction, or a joke, or something not needed, and should therefore be ignored - MNZ is one organisation with this attitude.

RG50's were sold as a road bike. When it comes to off-road bikes that could be road registered I think you'll be getting into a grey area. This sort of thing always depends on if you want to go with the spirit of the class or push the boundaries...

No drama Skunk, 925 has been hanging around bucket racing for quite some time, had some great races with his bro & Father many years back.
I'd say a DRZ125 is as legal as a Longchin.

Yeah, well, I'm against them too... ferkin' four strokes.

I see the Honda TL125 is on "the list", technically speaking they are a competition machine? Just asking *cough*
Ohhh also found some photos of a road registered RS125? Guess it must be ok for buckets then? Toodle pip

Road registered doesn't come into it (although I thought it used to)
What part of this don't you understand
24-2-4 Engines must be derived from non-competition motorcycles.
And there's also the fact 125 watercooled aren't eligible
But you already knew all that before you even posted

Up to interperetation really.
I think it is within the spirit of the rules and all that, its hardly going to set any speed records.
I'm sure no-one would have a REAL problem with one out there...

Woah! At least you put a decent case foward!
I have tried to go back and edit the list, however I can't seem to.
I'm guessing there must be limitations on editing.
I will have to investigate but that can wait until later, I have two-stroke dreams to stoke...
