View Full Version : WARNING: New speed camera vans
TOTO

New for me today I saw this....
It has a camera in the back (as usual), operator inside, and a FLASH mounted where the towbar is.
It is also not in a normal van but a sort of minivan or something like that(see pic). I'm guessing they can do it in all sorts of cars too.
this one was parked on the back roads of Beach Heaven in North Shore Auckland but I would imagine that there are more contractors in normal cars around the city/country.
so yea. anywhere, anytime boys and girls.
Beware.

The flash makes them pretty obvious though, suckers. Does anyone know if the vans are one or two lanes? or four as the case may be sometimes.

They are in the Waikato too
I saw one in a silver Toyota Regulus import people mover, same setup.
it was parked off the road behind a barrier by the river in the Karangahake Gorge. Often we have trout fishermen parking there so it looks very "normal" :buggerd:- the bastards

I still say that the old Police Hiace/L300's would have been the easiest vans to disguise, ever.
Couple of ladders and long plastic tubes on a roofrack, and suddenly they'd have had instant plumber/electrician vans.

That, and the L300s had you slowing down for all the tradies' vans.
The L300 is common - a brand new Previa is a relatively rare sight.

A disgustingly large amount, actually.

... the L300 "no longer meets the operational requirements for a camera vehicle"
actually means?
They're too recognisable?
They're not comfy for the operators to sit in for long periods of time?
I don't think it will be long before you can get tuned into noticing them parked up in the usual "accident blackspots".
I guess that even if they are significantly dearer than the L300's they replace, they'll have a good return on investment till people start to notice them, and even thereafter.

Personally I am wary of ANY vehicle parked up like that...
Apologies for taking this off topic... but has anyone else noticed that the northern motorway has been a hotspot for marked police cars over the last few weeks??? FARK I had a close call in the car and then last Sunday night I was pulled up on the bike.
It was dark, I was on my way home about 8pm. As soon as I pulled onto the motorway at silverdale i was aware of this blimmin car up my date, tailgating me and also blinding me with his lights.
I felt uncomfortable with that so gave the throttle a few blips and worked my way thru the traffic to get away from it.
Next thing there are red and blue lights behind me. As soon as the cop approached me I told him what was going on and he looked away with a slightly sheepish expression on his face.
I cracked up and said "oh shit! it was you wasn't it?" he didn't admit it but said that since they were unable to get a fix on my speed (and honestly I only sped up to get away from this car!) he wasn't gonna issue me with a ticket...
Aside from that what worries me is when some genius makes a speed camera that can target/track and swivel...

Don't they use 'non-sworn staff', i.e., non-policepersons?
They only sit there in the van reading, and occasionally writing down regos. They can't personally issue tickets, AFAIK.

I'm sure I saw one of these operating Easter weekend, it was at the end of SH27 where it joins onto SH1 at the bottom of the bombay hills.
Every heard of the motorcycle data base? I heard a rumour that all the frontal speeding tickets (no plate showing) are kept and referenced to all the rear speeding tickets (plate showing) from the area, if a match can be made the a ticket is sent.
Does anyone know if this is true or not?

wouldn't surprise me, they were sure to eventualy get pissed off at seeing pictures of bikers doing "crazy" speeds and flipping them the bird etc that the would devise a way to start nailing our arses to the wall. Dunno whether its the correct approach, given there are numerous bikes out there that are identical with riders wearing all black leathers... can see arguments arising over whether it was the person ticketed or not. I assumed that they would eventually wise up and move the cameras to the front of the vehicles to get the bikes heading away and therefore have the number plate in shot.

 I read somewhere that the technology is available now to make vehicles do the speed limits posted, something to do with Martians, circuit boards and satellites, anyway the thing is, new vehicles can be fitted with with a (thing), no doubt at the purchasers expense, that tells the Martians when you've entered a restricted zone then a ray gun automatically kills your speed.
It will be interesting to see if countries like Britainville adopt this system, given that they earn more from speeding fines than any other profit making enterprise, can they actually afford to run a country where people don't speed!
One day gubermints will stop pretending highway robbery is road safety and start doing something about the piss heads maniacs and halfwits that I meet every day on the road, on that day I shall wear carrots up my nose, call myself rupert and give Fat Max a sloppy snog.

Speaking about parking. Wouldn't it be possible to park something big behind a speed camera van?

I validated the "K-Band radar" statement yesterday.
The tax collector in his/her L300 van has obviously been given one of the new cameras that ARE operating on the K-Band.
I went past and nothing signalled. Pulled over and switched on the K-Band on the STi, then did a U turn and did an extra couple of passes.
Results:
Bel STi.
Approaching the cameravan head-on. Detection range approx 800metres.:woohoo:
Approaching cameravan from opposite direction (Radar beam heading away from detector). Detection range approx 150metres.:woohoo:
wicked. cheers for that. Will test it on my V1 when I get it soon.

redflex (aussie)k band 24.100 ghz and very hard to pick up with a detector even top of the range
sent in my sti to get upgraded as it was only getting 200m on the ka and 50m on the new k
now I have it back just need to find a couple of cameras to check how the new upgrade is
trouble is with k on you get all the crap signals...at least the sti can be set to C to filter out most

OH NO HE DIDN'T.
There's always two sides to the coin.

Perhaps you should vent your anger at those who place "speed cameras" at locations which have no correlation with accidents.
The "speed camera" was introduced into NZ on the premise that they would ONLY be used in accident black-spots. Since then they have become used as a taxation gathering device.

Speed cameras should not be a problem for me, because I own a Stealth Bike. Yes, believe it or not Yamaha have cleverly incorporated stealth technology into their Scorpio commuters. Every time I ride past the pole-mounted speed display device on the Appleby Highway in Richmond, it shows my speed at 10kph slower than my speedo.
It seemed ridiculous that my speedo could be that badly out of calibration, so I decided to stop up the road and wait for a car to go by so I could measure my speed against theirs. Sure enough, despite carefully following at an even distance, the car got a display of 81kph and I got 71kph.
Don't be surprised if you hear in the news that the US military is placing a big order for Scorpios. :)

I dreamed up a device a few years ago to stop a speed camera from getting your plate..It works like this ..you have 2 small photographic flash guns mounted either side of your number plate at 45 degrees facing in from the plate to the back ...these are attached to a photo slave unit...it will pick up the flash from the camera and will fire your flashes almost instantly.....when they revenue gathering swine check the pics your plate should be whited out by your flashes.
But I havent tried it its only a theory..:devil2:
