I am looking to get Dad a surprise bday pres for his 50th. He is 5ft10 and around the 100kg mark. He used to race MX but its been a while...

I don't know what to get him. I am on a budget - under 2k hopefully.

He just wants to come out to woodhill and potter round trails and farms and stuff.

What would you recommend?!

Options I have considered:
98 CR125. Might be too putty for him!?
91 DR350. Might be too old and unreliable - maybe too heavy/not sporty enuf.

Get a KDX cause they are so great that James Stewart and Chad Reed are both going to ride them in MX next year.

its not just them either-

the whole crusty crew have traded their bikes for KDX's because they too heard how awesome they are!

also ive been told that the 2009 ISDE rules are going to state that only KDX bikes may enter due to the fact that all the pro's are going to be riding them anyway and it will make the scruteneers lives easy only having to check one model of bike

jeremy mcgrath also stated that the 13 consecutive championship wins he had in the 90s were all also on re-badged KDX250s disguised to look like the team bikes which he was supposedly riding.

all of this evidence definately confirms that the kdx was, is , and always will be the worlds best bike ever and that all future development by all other manufacturers will be in efforts to replicate this incredible state of the ark machine

He wants to potter round Woodhill and do farm trails......not try out for Crusty's or win an AMA race.......if they were'nt a decent versatile bike, why are there heaps out there who ride them and like them?????

I'm sure they have a KDX to hire at the sand pit, maybe set him up for a ride on it to make sure he is into it, it may be like the lotto add with the guy working on his car every night then the son wins lotto and tweaks it up for him, it may be the same for your old man, he likes to talk about the days when he carved it up but is happy to talk about it.

Give him a go on the rental and then offer to buy him one, he may put some money into it to get a better bike etc.

Just a thought for ya.

P.S
Don't bother with the CR 125 idea for him, maybe a DR350 but the KDX will not fail him.

LOL state of the Ark!!!!!!!!!

lol, like that one.

If you do get him a kdx, make sure it has the bag thing on the rear gaurd (purple looks better).

Mine you, you won't get any better for under $2k, just get a 95+ model (purple bits look best). Old people seem to love them anyway, and so will he probably, aye ktmboy????

nah, im not dissing them, im just mocking the fact that any time anyone asks about a bike for anyone for any purpose, every time someone suggests a kdx in the first couple of posts!

it probably will do him just nicely realisticly. we're just taking the piss

I think that the hire him one idea is a really good idea. Then give him money towards one.

OK, here goes...... I am 52 and feeling it... I raced lots on and off road, I have the permanent reminders of most of the crashes, I'm probably not too different to your Dad... It would have been a mistake for me to get the KX125 before a trail bike. Old guys need soft front ends, and compliant rears (must be a joke in there somewhere  ) The MX'er is fine somewhere like Ardmore or Harrisville where the track is predictable, relatively smooth and the sessions mercifully short, but when you're trying to ride all day with you fast, "I'll never crash" youngsters, the poor old shoulders, (both been dislocated) knees (both been rebuilt) and (strangely never been injured) tired old back require a “limo” not “GTR” type ride. The soft ride of the KDX is exactly what makes it suitable for 50th pressies. I hope you all get old enough to fully appreciate just how timeless it’s become as a “trailbike” Now back to servicing the KX for Harrisville on Saturday and Wildman Sunday…The Zimmer frame can wait, damn it…….

Classic. Good feedback thanks. Looks like I need at least a 200t or 250f and the ktx seems like a good option.
