I intend to race at Taupo at the VCC Rd1 meeting in May.
I have been adviced to use a med/hard compond tyres as the track is abbrasive.
I have also been advised to use a soft tyre coumpound because it will be cold and some of the track patching is slippery.
I am picking the races will be around 6 laps.
Any advice would be apreciated.

Information I was fed from Dunlop while being looked after them mate was as follows and worked very well in real world application.

Harder compound tyres will resist cold sheering naturally due to the harder compound. That's simple enough.

Further to that, hard tyres are actually designed to work within a lower temperature range, thus giving better grip with diminished temp.

Hope that helps.

Jimmy and Shaun are both correct and that Conti offer is great. Harder compound tyres are indeed designed to run at colder temperatures. Spring rate choice and the internal damping force curve also has to be in a suitable window to help induce tyre temperature into the right zone that precludes undue risk of cold shear.

I'm gonna try knobbly tyres as I always end up on the grass at that track.

Lots of good advice here so far, and we should all take note - there is an important link between tyre performance and suspension setting. Inducing more heat into the firmer tyre you are forced to use in certain conditions by using a heavier spring rate is one example.
It's a big picture thing, and a dynamic system, and the advice regarding compound choice for Taupo is pretty much on the money, especially in the cooler conditions.
