View Full Version : I Bought a Blackbird!

Zed
13th March 2005, 17:28
[Edited 14/03/05]My wife and I drove down to Huntly tonight after work and paid cash for the bike and I rode it home. Now safely parked in my garge!

13/03/05 - Through TradeMe (http://www.trademe.co.nz/structure/listings/listings_category.asp?mcat=0001-0026-1255-2509-) I organised with the seller to meet me and my other half in Mercer this morning so that I could take it for a test ride. What can I say - the bike fit me like a glove and I loved it. It met my checklist of power(far out!), comfort, and looks down to a tee. :niceone:

The machine is a black 1997 *Honda* CBR1100XX Blackbird with 34k on the clock. Apart from the following additions the bike is still in very good original condition: Corbin seat (real comfy for both rider and pillion), tinted touring windshield, Scottoiler chain lubrication system, and half polished rims.

When I began searching for another bike I really hadn't planned on buying a Super Blackbird, but the opportunity arose to buy this one at the right price so I took it. Looking forward to a whole new riding experience on the big 1100cc (largest I've ever owned in the past is a 900).

May see you out on the road sometime!

Take care,

Zed

Ah yeah, well done, that is the bike for you. Looks great, and should go well. Get it insured before you pick it up though, & talk the missus into keeping it in the lounge.

Will see you on the road then...

Take care, a "little" :shake: more power than the 600...Um...yeah just a tad...:yeah: When I opened it up this morning in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd it just blew me away...I was sorta 'sold on acceleration' if you know what I mean!

Thanks Jo :niceone:

Well done Zed - clearly a gentleman of taste. :niceone: I'm sure you'll enjoy it, especially that massive torque.

Ahem.... still plenty of time to enter for the Southern Cross and REALLY get used to it - then we can meet Jim 2 on the way through :2thumbsup

Alternatively, take a day off on Tuesday and come across to Coromandel for a ride - I'm going up on the 'bird to mow our lawns up there (a thinly-disguised excuse for a ride)

Good on on ya!

Mentioning SH22, you know the road that you turn down off 22 to go to the Mercer truckstop? Well that was where I testrode the new bike this morning! Some of the best roads in the country down that way mate!! :niceone:

My bum starts to get pretty numb by the time I've travelled 300 k's without a break and I'm in a lot of pain after one of the 1000 miles in 24 hour rides although a sheepskin does help. My wife would spit the dummy at a Corbin seat but with the Southern Cross ride coming up, I've got to do something. I was just telling Bykey Cop that I've grasped the nettle and will be taking the seat over to Tauranga on Saturday for a re-sculpting and re-covering. The outfit has a website: http://www.trimit.co.nz/. I think it's Cajun's father-in-law who runs the business. Have heard great things about them so will do a post when I pick it up and try it.

Blackbird
14th March 2005, 13:41
As you rightly say, she isn't a lightweight but the torque means that popping wheelies off the throttle is no problem. I'm not a big wheelie fan for a number of reasons but short-shifting away from a standstill in first and then opening it up in second is a real blast. Did it accidentally when I first had the 'bird at the traffic lights in Cobham Drive, Hamilton. It was my first ever wheelie and it was a big un too. I was alongside a car at the time and I think we both had brown trousers. My riding partner who was just behind me was still laughing when we reached the next roundabout

You might think that the 'bird accelerates hard from tickover, but you'd better be holding on tight when you hit 7000 rpm - it's like your whole world is dissolving! To be honest, I rarely bother with a lot of revs or lots of down-shifting because for normal riding, it delivers the goods so effortlessly.

Email me sometime if you're interested and I'll tell you about a few simple things like a rear end jack up plate which improves handling enormously.

I'm sure going to enjoy this flying 'Bird'.

Well it's all looking good for a pickup tonight around 6pm! I now have the cash in my pocket and the bike is insured (thru Protecta). Will knock off work and meet the wife at home only to quickly chuck all my gear in her car and make our way down to Huntly (about an hours drive from our house)...anticipating an awesome ride back to Auckland during the final hours light of the day!

Well done on the purchase, some fine tuning and you will both love the 'bird.

An excuse/reason for taking the long way home after picking the bike up . . . . .

There are road works on SH1 for kilometres on the way to Huntly so I would humbly suggest a 'trip' the back way home if possible, even for only a short time.

Hey HR

Can you still get those subtle Ichthus plastic thingies? Haven't seen a new one around for some time.
They come in several sizes and styles. We sell them in our shop in the Christian bookstore section that we have.
A couple of other bikes at work have them on them. Though cages seem to have them on their boot lids they certainly are a subtle way of declaring ones faith.

And as for the natives, I am very grateful to the farmers wife who let me use approx 5 litres of her petrol when I by chance stopped in at the nearest farm after almost running out of fuel tonight along 22. The bb seat looks great. Being a short arse, I'd like about 5mm off the height and I sit well forward so either something to spread the load or softer foam! Jennie needs more padding than standard too! See you Saturday.
