Yeh.............A few of us are going this year. For at least two of us it'll be our first.
Does a 29 year veteran have any suggestions or tips?

quickly set up camp, get a fire drum and go get firewood...
Take warm clothes... keep them dry... (especially spare sox) if rains when you go to bed, dry feet and put warm dry sox on before going to bed... have to keep feet warm... if really cold... wear beanie as well...
silk liners in sleeping bag adds a couple of degrees extra comfort... if still cold throw jacket over as well... if still cold you obviously didn't drink enough..
if you go to bed cold you will stay cold... if you go to bed warm you have more of a chance staying warm and your sleeping bag keeping the heat in.

Im planing on going down. Is anyone from Christchurch heading on down?
I was reading on the BM site that fuel can freeze in the fuel lines and radiators can burst. How likely is this to happen? Just curious is all.

Yep me. Been to 20 this year, most of them from the north island.
Thinking about staying again in the Criterion Hotel in Oamaru friday night, the hotelier let us park our bike in the old stables out the back.
We always camp on the highest grassy knoll out back away from the noisy area, overlooking the lake (OK I am getting old).
I'm really looking forward to the trip.

Depends.. they have moved the dates forward a month or so in the past couple of years... so its not the heart of winter but still can get bloody cold there... the first year I went it rain, and then it froze coldn't get the old key in the bike for an hour or so... and then it wouldn't start... had to wait for the truck to come round with the truck battery ;)

Sounds like you have a good plan. Mind if I tag along?
I like the idea of camping away from all the noise. If its one thing I hate at night its plenty of noise.

Me too, I like to camp and do my own thing away from the noise.
The oil can get a bit thick and hard to crank over, if the battery is flat it can freeze. Petrol won't freeze but the water, if any in the bottom of the carb-tank might. Radiators can freeze but if the cooling system is full of a suitable antifreeze you will have no problems.
I always throw a cover over the scoot and I have never had a problem getting it started.

I'll be there again - number 14 or 15, need to count the badges.
Don't get so pissed that you fall over and go to sleep on the ground. There are people who go round looking for basket cases and they are taken care of, but the place where you get put isn't the most pleasant. Still better than hypothermia, though.

I'll be dumb enough to be going, though I'll be heading to Ingill earlier on in the week and heading up from there, then a week long tiki tour home after that.
Excuse a probable stupid question but would it be worth while taking the battery out and keeping it in the tent to keep it warmer?

There is a odd nostalga about the rally that draws you back... yip Im thinking about it we will see closer to the time :cold:

Can't wait to be able sit in the 10up tent eating my free apples watching the novices enter. :cold: Only thing Im dreading is the trip to the ferry and getting off it on the way back. Getting slower, going to spend 10 days across the ditch this year.

Went last year... a long way from dorkland.
IMHO I would rate the Cold Kiwi as a much better investment in terms of rally material.
Much more entertainment and general carry on. All seemed a bit flat and commercial.
But you have to go to at least one Brass before you die. The journey is the best part. :-)

Most "endurance rallys" award badges on completion of the event :woohoo: , The brass is a "social" event and the Otago Motorcycle Club (the organisers) donates a lot of money to charity  . Awarding badges for attendance overnight, may(will, I reckon) reduce numbers "attending" :weep: , and thus reduce the amount of dosh for people that NEED it... badly   ....
I've only made it to one so far. Couldn't find the KB site but I was very new to KB at the time so had never seen anyone at that stage to recognise them when I rode past. Ended up camping with some random people I met in Ranfurly at the soup stop.
Funny thing happened there though. It had been raining all the way but finally let up around 5:30 6:00 so rather than walk around in wet gear freezing cold like everybody else I shucked off the riding gear and hung it up on my camp chair in front of the fire. This meant all I had left to wear was a singlet and a pair of trackpants.
For some strange reason I got a lot of funny looks from people as I walked around the site.
Difference being they still had the wet gear on so they froze whereas at least the little that I was wearing was dry, so I barely noticed the cold.
But then thats the nice thing about Central Otago. When it's not raining at least the cold up there is a dry cold.
That wasn't the strangest thing though....
The strangest thing about that whole time wandering around half dressed was.......
Only one guy yelled "show us your tits!"
I started to wonder if I was at a bike rally after that....

Hub wants to go down to the rally this year and it'll be his first time.
Is the venue open for camping Friday night, or does everyone turn up on Saturday and it's all over rover on Sunday morning?
Does the entry fee include a badge, and can you get one if you don't pre-register?
The website/newsletter don't really tell a noob much!

Which year was it (early 80's) that we had to scrape the snow off the ground before pitching the tents?
It was the year before we rode the bikes on the ice.
A pity they moved the event forward from the last weekend in June to the first. Those 4 weeks make a big difference to the temperature. But this year is shaping up as being reminiscent of those early rallys.

Some tips from experience
1/ always ... always, no matter in what state you arrive back at your tent, have a leak before going to sleep, cause it's usually about -5 then. Later it can be - 14, and it aint easy getting up and out of a nice warm sleep bag for a nature call.
2/ pre paying, order the evening meal, it a hearty, tasty, warming and belly lining bowl of stew slop, just the thing.
3/ it can frost and mist (despite a sunny day arrival) in the mornings if it hasn't snowed, be careful
4/ learn the "monkey step", that's the dance move where you face the fire for 5 seconds, spin on your feet 180 for 5 seconds, then again turn 180 for another 5 seconds , etc, etc, etc, etc until your beer runs out or freezes in your hand
5/ do not ever take a pee on the frozen lake, unless you can swim
6/ i wrapped a blanket around my bike motor and took a lot of rap (pun) for it. Last laugh for me in the morning when the bike started with one kick as all the electric legs were all getting jump started.

1. Always leave a gap big enough to get through ... by the time you actually go to pee (after putting it off for as long as you can) there is a very high degree of urgency... no time to work frozen zippers on the tent..... trying to keep the heat in the tent does NOT work.
2. In the absense of a pre-paid meal... eat as much as you can before dark. This leaves the entire evening to get shit-faced.....
3.It can be frosty, misty, raining, snowing... often before you open your eyes. Before you venture from your tent ... open your eyes and check current conditions...and location/direction of facility required (ie. food tent, beer tent, toilet. etc.)
4.Anywhere near the bonfire... keep moving/revolving. If you get dizzy... blame it on whatever you're drinking... and change to something else...
Insulated stubby holders are GREAT. (gloves are for honda riders and chicks)
5.When you pee... do it often (over tent zippers is fun). Long drawn out pee's in below freezing temp's are NOT fun...
6.Start bike at regular intervals... every 20 minutes is good. Take it to the rev limiter/red-line for at least ten minutes... then hit the kill switch. It will start in the daylight ... if there is any gas left (and no-one has pulled the spark leads off)

Good friends, good roads and a whole heap of South Island hospitality. Even the 2004 ice ride out of thereas worth the effort. If you havent done it, then you aint a KiwiBiker.

The Brass does not get "rescheduled for a more suitable time". It is ... and always will be, on the date specified. Rain , hail, snow, or begging from soft-cock Aucklanders. The date does not change. If only 5 show up ... they will run at a loss, but they will run it.

If you go to the booking tent near the gate they will have your entry on record. They are very well organised (well, they have been in the past)

Doc, looking forward to meeting you matey.....................
I just come back from a do in a pub in Clydevale, had wicked time With Clive of Clydevale and 2 new guys Regan and Jarrod what a couple of neat guys.... the trip back from Clydale was interesting, the bridge that links the road to get to Lawrence was closed, so had to deviate down a road called Breakneck Road, aptly named:eek: and drove through the wickedly beautiful valley there, stopped for a couple of photographic opportunities. Again it totally knocks me sideways with the spectacular scenery over here, the hills just dip and roll before your eyes, it always looks like someone has drawn them perfectly.....A Mazing...
So time for bed, 6 more sleeps till the chilly monkey.....Cant wait, going to enjoy this one so much for one massive reason...all will become clear

4 sleeps before we head off.
Just going to Oamaru friday night, me and the Wiskey bar have an appointment. Going to camp on the high ground at the back of the site, overlooking the lake.
Not sure what my plans are after this they are all very weather dependent.
Coming back up the west coast is an option.

quickly set up camp, get a fire drum and go get firewood...
Gezzze by the sound of it all if you go to bed warm u have more chance of staying a live for the night ha ha...

The Red Cagiva and the tent its next to are exactly the same as mine.
If the owners are making a return trip this year then it could get confusing. Especially after a few drinks and a walk around the bikes. I wont know east from west little lone which bike and tent are mine.
Still it shows they have exceptional taste in bikes and camping equipment.

There is normally some KB people against the fence just down the hill, last year we parked just over the way from there close to the lav.
The images below give a good indication of what I mean, the last couple of years or so there has been a KB flag attached to the fence, no sure if that will be the case this year.
