I do a fair bit of traveling and a fair bit of fish & chip eating and wonder why there isnt a standard measure for a scoop of chips. Or is there?.....

If there isnt, there should be as its stink going to a shop for the first time and not knowing if they give a decent scoop or a stingey scoop.

If there is a standard scoop, what size should it be because I want to have a go at some of the shops around Wellys that get abit shy when dealing out the chips!

And I hope the measurement used isnt a TAD, a PINCH, a DOLLOP etc..

Just ask them what their standard scoop is - I've never had an issue with them showing me.

Some of them hold up the actual scoop and say "It's one and half of these"

Sorted.

I find that varies depending on how often you go there. Sometimes they reduce it once you're hooked :-O

I used to work in F'nC shop, we used to measure it by grabbing a scoop with our hands, customers did get pissy with me though....I have small hands! I wouldn't bother getting your knickers in twist with the shops that give stingy scoops, just go to the good ones!! Life is too short to waste time with mank fish'n'chips!

There is only one in Welly.....IMHO anyway BUT I can't remember what it is called, all I know is it is Petone and run by a Greek man, and his F'n'Cs are farken AWESOME!!!! and they are huge scoops too!!!!

I am sure one of the Welly crew can provide more details!!!

Shit just remembered, there is a wicked place in the Whitby shopping centre too, their chip sizing is very good but they have these MASSIVE homemade springrolls covered in proper batter

Although it has been a number of years since I lived there, what I say is most likely utter crap now, so my feeling won't be hurt if you don't take this post into consideration :D

Been quite disgusted at the amount some people give out these days.
Was down in Taranaki somewhere a couple months ago...
'$5 chips, please'.

They may as well hand it to me in a fucking paper baggie, useless b'stards.

Weren't even good, either.

Couple local shops are pretty much like that too.
Lost all faith in the mountain of chips and 5 extra potato fritters for $5.

Heh, I've worked in my olds Chinese Takeaways shop for a couple of decades now (and a bit ... ), we give the good ol'fashioned scoop o'chips - using a standard scoop plus a bit more. Know exactly what you mean with the variability of quality and quantity with shops! :oi-grr:

I always find going to other shops quite instructive and can usually identify pretty quickly what and how they go about their black arts :shifty:

Usually an order of egg burger, chips and a fried rice will tell me about the quality of the takeaway! Years of experience! :pinch:

Got two scoops last night from my local, seemed a good size, and got extra fish I didnt even pay for - thats always a nice surprise.

The only thing I do know is you have to have the Crinkle Cut chips taste nicer than the straight! ;)

It's not in Petone though - it's Moera. I used to live in Woburn and went there regularly, but I reckon the one in Waiwhetu Road just by the lights at Whites Line East are better. Huge pieces of fish and really nice chips.

I know what you mean - we usually ask for a scoop and a half if we're not sure of the size, and sometimes you get a huge pile of chips and others you get about a cup full.

That was my shop of choice when I was in Wainui. Worth the trip over the hill. Chips in eke are shit:argh:

My father could never reconcile himself to the fact that the scoop of chips was an indefinite quantity. "How can you know how many to buy if you don't know how big they are?" he said. "How do you know if you're getting value for money?" "Oh, Dad," we said, "don't worry about it. Just buy the chips!"

Don't worry about it. Just buy the chips.
