You taking the old farm bike up there Bart.

The old farm bike would make it up easy. Nice low gearing (and I can actually touch the ground).

Oh god, Cnut Hill! You're welcome to have a go Bart; won't be risking it the way my back has been lately! The river crossings/entries & exits will be enough challenge for me i reckon! As in, staying upright is always a challenge for me LOL! ;)
Either way, would be good to see you mate!

I'm tempted. If the weather looks good, I might make an effort.

If the track is in a reasonable condition, I might nosey up the hill and see how far I get. My tyres are pretty shit though, so I don't like my chances.

Could that have been snagged from removing the Stator cover then by someone? The neutral switch on the left with the philips head? Have you ever removed this? I think the issue with mine not indicating neutral is the switch. I have done some research, KTM owners have said it can fail periodically. My one comes on when I earth it, but won't go out when I change gear. I plonk a screwdriver in the hole with the wire and it lights up. Put the screw back in with the wire and it stops?
I am no sparkie but it sounds like a switch issue.
Do you still have the sidestand switch on the bike?
Under the seat there is acluster of pins, one goes to temp, one goes to sidestand switch - Green and black if it is original (neutral wire)

The wire got nipped up on the very edge of the oil filter housing plate. :( It was too long in any event, so responded well to shortening.

There are three wire sets down to switches there. All connect with spade terminals. Yes, I identified the neutral switch - green & black as you say. Haven't removed the switch, but issues are common with other bikes, so don't see that KTM would be an exception to the rule.

The other close one is the second gear switch. Think that (& the thrid gear switch) is all to do with the TPS which (I think) changes the ignition curve dependent on gear & throttle, to stop fat Amercans looping the bike (??!!).

Took the sidestand switch off when I went back to the centrestand. Just effectively plugged it into itself.

The long range forecast has improved a bit for Saturday for Martinborough area. At the moment possible chance of showers but at least the snow forecast has moved forward to Friday LOL!

How about meet at the gas station at Eketahuna at about 10am Sunday. I'm free all weekend (for the first time in ages) so whatever works for you.

Plenty of route options to choose from. I've got a rough plan in mind, but I'm prone to make it up as I go along.

No worries. It is a long way from Welly. If no ones keen, I'll just go for a quick pootle by myself. See if I can get myself lost (I seem to be able to do that even when I know where I'm going). :niceone:

The weather is shaping up to be nice for the coming weekend - I'm definitely heading over to the 'Rapa for a ride on Saturday as I'm daddy-duty free that day - might as well try and wear the last mm of tread off my rear D606 before my hernia op aye, and the bike just had its 6000k service so needs a good thrashing!

Maybe Bart's new Black Beastie can come play with its brother from Welly!!!!

I STILL haven't been up to Castlepoint and would love some gravel/tracks to there but I know a few of you went up that way just recently with JMJ. Anyone fancy that? OR.......

are we fancying Sutherlands Hut with a Cnut Hill attempt for those that fancy it and/or those with pink undies heading to Cnut Hill from the Ngawi side if JMJ can poss sort gate key?

What d'ya reckon guys?

For those coming from Welly/Hutt, lets plan on meet up at Rimutaka Caltex Upper Hutt, for 9am ish departure so we can meet Joe and the rest of the 'Rapa crew at Toppys in Martinborough at 10am.

And the weather is lookin great - finally!

Hi Stephen just read the posts, guys at work use my KB account.
the true story is a piece of wire mesh got caught on my foot then went around the rear wheel, causing lots of sparks and blue smoke.A passing ambo stopped and wanted to argue with me about going to hosp when all I wanted was a pair of side cutters, anyway few stitches later and a fork truck ride for the bike and we are back on the road less chain guard and a large portion of tyre an a pint of claret.
Shit happens.
Hope to see You all on sat if I finish work early.
Cheers Pete.

Unfortunately very unlikely I will make it to the off road section - maybe a road trip over to Martinborough for morning coffee with the team? Van still has minor clutch issues, was out to dinner tonight so unable to repair and load and, no, I am probably not quite motivated enough to get up early and do the entire way on the little Pampera on a frosty morning!

I would say you are going to have a really good day once things warm up. Based on the temperature of the trip home on the Vespa a few minutes ago and the brilliant clear night sky it is going to be a perfect still late winter day.

Hey Joe, (wasn't that a Jimi Hendrix song).

I'll probably meet you at Alfredon (or there abouts).

There are a lot more interesting roads around there than what you've picked. I guess the google job is just a guide, as one of the roads doesn't exist. :spanking:

As for gas, bring some cash and I'll sort you out. I know some people who know some people. I'll ring up tonight, but he'll be more than happy to help. About $2 a litre should cover it.

Otherwise, I'm heading out that way tomorrow, so could drop a 10 litre container out there somewhere.:niceone:

Hi Aslan. The track has been cleared a lot recently, so you can ride past that rut quite easily now. It's still a challenging ride, but perhaps not as bad as a couple of years ago, (that rut was more of a pain than a challenge though). You should come and have a look. I have posted a small selection of photos that hopefully add something to the comprehensive coverage already posted:

1.The letter box display at Balmoral Station along State Highway 52

2.Joe looking back at me on Little Manuhara “Road” from one of the short dry bits linking the mud. Either making sure I was OK or watching to see if I was about to make an ass of myself

3.A pensive team contemplates the upcoming Makairo Track section while lunching under the picnic shelter at Waihi Falls

4.Looking from the top of the Puketoi Range west to the Waewaepa Range. Summit of Makairo Track visible centre-right.

5.The beginning of the Makairo track – the cut off east end of the former Makairo Road

"Track itself not pictured" and "your results may differ"

6.The west end of the Makairo Track – the renamed east end of the former Makairo Road

Great day out. I have ridden a lot of these roads alone on the BMW Dakar in years past and it is much more enjoyable in a group. Thanks to all and especially Joe and Bart. Add an espresso machine and a whisky flask to all the other equipment on the back of the 650 Joe and you will be equipped for anything!

A note to those in the lead going fast enough to come off the track. Did you stop and have a look down at the steepness and height of the drop off on the west end! Hard to believe this used to be a council road. I suspect this was the real reason for closure, the relatively minor bridge damage was an excuse to keep traffic away from an unprotected sheer fall of well more than 100 metres. Took pictures but they simply don't do it justice (like Mark's pictures of the Toppy's waitress).

I note the West end of the road remains under stress, one major slip both above and below the road - this is going to get expensive some time soon.

Yes - while all these marvellous roads are in us Wellingtonian's back yard, looping through a few as a day trip makes for a very long day. I did this numerous times on my black and white Dakar and you run up near 500 km and get home well after dark in winter. It makes good sense to plan an overnighter.

I stayed at a fishing lodge at Porangahau the night before attending the "Blackhead Revisted" Adventure ride in early 2000's. However, it did not have all the attractions of a major metropolis such as Dannevirke.

Great idea.

When I figure out how to do it without upsetting YouTube over the music rights and can pick some music that goes with the movie.

Excellent :)

Most of that was filmed with my handheld, there's only 2 small clips done with the GoPro, but yeah it works fairly well. Vibration is the main issue. While it has some fairly good anti-shake software built into the camera there's a lack of places I can mount it on the PD that don't also flex and add a lot of extra movement on top of the vibration the bike already produces. I've tried mounting it on the screen, headlight and front guard on the bike, all of which have a fair bit of flex once things are moving.

I've also tried on top of the helmet but the smallest head movement is multiplied where the camera is mounted. I tried on the side of the helmet Monday night and that might be the go I think.

I wasn't saying I wasn't aware of the ride (Thanks Joe)

I had already committed to going trail riding with my son - so it wasn't as if I was stuck painting the house or something boring - in fact I had a great day.

I just hate missing out on any adv rides :weep:

I popped over the hill today for the ACC latte run and had a play around the local roads afterwards.

If you go down the trail beside the river you can actually almost get to Martinborough riding through open land.

I also struck 2 separate Wairarapa traffic jams.
