12 May 2006

The new GN250 was delivered in Stokes Vegas tonight at 1721hrs by Wellington Motor Cycle Centre.

Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.

That's one small step for BuckBuck but one giant leap for a whole lot of pleasure.

Look forward to catching up with you all when I build up my skills and confidence.

You may recall I tasked myself to do 1,000km in Stokes Valley before I ventured any further, three years ago..........Well now at 61,000km and I haven't ventured any further north than Hunterville on SH1, or Wanganui, or Pongaroa, or Castlepoint, nor any further south than ah hum Island Bay.:scooter:

Hello Bryce

I am downloading the pics from the camera this morning for you. They were actually pictures of the last Thursday Night ride, not Wednesday. If memory serves me correct that last Wedneday ride went up over the Paekakariki Hill. The pictures I have are at the top of the Rimutaka Hill.

Pictures will be posted over in the Thursday Night thread:

Cool! Gone all sportsbike on us eh. ;)

Hi Trudes, well I figure a 12mth time-out on the 250R could be fun. I had a demo out for 3hrs and did the Taka's down to the twin bridges, then across the Haywards and Porirua suburbs to Wadestown. Aside from the legs being a little sore, I reckon the Ninja 250R is a very good buy, the 2009 has been revamped from previous Ninja and does have a larger bike appearance to it. Here is one of many links:

http://www.totalmotorcycle.com/photos/2009models/2009-Kawasaki-Ninja250R.htm

I have averaged 20,000km each year since early 2006 and the majority of that has been over to the Wairarapa. When I took the demo out, I planned on going to the top of the Rimutaka Hill, on my way up I said to myself 'this 250R is plenty comfortable and, for me a pleasure to ride on this hill which I have done quite a few hundred times. So it was over the other side to the twin bridges and back.:2thumbsup:2thumbsup:2thumbsup

A 250 sprotbike? Have you gone all boy racer on us?
Hi Dadpole, reckon I'd be able to light up a cigarette by the time I got to highway legal speed  compared to the 900 Hornet. Boy racer, heck I think there's a compliment in there:scooter::scooter: being on the other side of 57 :rockon::rockon:

Now that is different. Nice bike and as a 250 it will retain its value even with the kms you will no doubt put on it before the next change.

Cheers sinned, retaining value over the next 12mths was a key consideration too: comparing the 2007 Hornet and 2009 Ninja, there would have been some key spends on the Hornet eg. Inside the next 5,000km the original chain and spockets and also original brake pads front and rear would be due, as well as a major 48,000km service - valve clearances etc, and last but not least another set of tyres. So probably not much change out of $2,500/3,000.

So in twelve months time both bikes would have similar resale prices, however the outlay on the Hornet, and the remaining new bike warranty on the Ninja, I think these factors came into play. 2010/2011 may see a sports bike upgrade...the new Z1000 is rather appealing...and to keep it in the green we shall see:2thumbsup

Mal - you didn't see that coming :2thumbsup Mind you when next you see me out there you may have to catch up and look a bit harder, then again the Kawasaki green won't be too difficult to miss

The back/neck presented a few issues this year and I get back to the local swim centre that helps a lot. The Ninja has a very good riding position for me which is more upright than true down beside the tank grips. Felt comfortable at the upper body, but being 183cm the legs were just a touch higher than the Hornet but not a major issue (might be an excuse to get that knee down :). I managed near three hours on the demo with only a few minutes stopped on a couple of occasions - to check out the Ninja.

BuckBuck#1
21st November 2009, 12:07
or more to the point hows the neck handling it Guy?

Hi Danny

Bumped into Riffer the other day at the Bikoi ride, duckpond. He reminded me of the DVD's Long Way Round series he lent me, and the penny didn't drop, I hadn't seen him for couple of years, then I recalled the early days when he took you and me out to Trentham carpark and we practised our cone weaving and braking. I remarked about that 'Oh that's when you took Danny and me out....'

The neck will always be an issue with osteoarthritis and cervical spondylosis in the spine, it's something you learn to live with and as I have said the swimming is very good for my condition - I use a small bouyancy float between my legs to keep my back straight.

Steak and Kidney, I'm from Sydney, pie in Featherston and back over the Rimutaka Hill, mindful of the traffic and slowing down further/pulling over to left to let cars pass on the straight sections leading to both sides of the hill. I am restricting the engine rpm during the initial break in period. Then around Maymorn and back over the Wallaceville Hill, Silverstream and home.

The major noticeable positive difference for me was not the horsepower, but rather the nimbleness of the lighter Ninja, hmmm even put the knee out too.:scooter::done:

First top up today, with 213km travelled only 7.5 litres of petrol:
3.5litres per 100km
28.5km per litre:2thumbsup

Cheers Shafty, running the engine in and 800km completed in 13days, now at the 8000rpm stage and the smile is getting bigger.

You know looking back over the last three and a half years, 250cc, 600cc, 650cc, 900cc, and now on a really good 250cc with restyled fairing, light, engine makeover, I am very very pleased.

Went and sat on my late Mentors park bench this evening, sat there and looked at the bike and said to myself:

'Guy you've been out on quite a few bikes these few short years and covered some kilometres, don't be surprised to see where you're at now, I am sure he would understand. Lest We Forget'

3,000km on the Ninja and Enjoying It - 72,000km todate
Rode over the Rimutaka Hill last night on the TCWNR, and no wind and little traffic, with the sun setting on the way back.

This morning rode down to Lower Hutt for a haircut, like your worst Gunnery Chief, yep short all over, very short. Well a man's got to do what a man's got to do for a few more horsepower....go figure with a helmet on.

Anyways, the sun was shining and no wind, so back over the hill around midday, an absolute dream of a ride and on the way back, just looked at my lines: setup the approach, looked through the bend across the apex, wound on the throttle and had a very very good ride. From the twin bridges to the first hairpin ran very comfortably, then decided to select a gear [4th] and left it there until the summit, and this is a 250cc mind you. Taking the shift out of the equation, left me to focus on the road ahead and how I was going to approach it [knowing that there was no traffic behind], well I had a ball, being at one with the bike and just enjoying the ride

Thats interesting Guy. I thought it may be a struggle up the hill in 4th. No offence meant there. Im not calling you a fat bastard or anything like that. Its just that it is little wee thing and thought it would require a shift or 20 up the hill.
On the Ape I usually select 3rd and let it run up in that when Im on my way back to Wellington. I like leaving in 3rd and it gives me the opportunity to really use lots of the rev range. Great fun.

Roger that Mal, hear what you're saying. Today was just a perfect little quiet run back up the hill, I have been quick shifting the wee 250cc heaps and running around 9k-11k rpm at times so today just sat back and shifted my attention to road craft, left it in 4th as I said and mumma'dit up the hill and enjoyed the real feel of the bike - shifting direction with the knees and looking 'at' and then 'across' the right handers ahead. Keeping an out right and in early and across the left bends.

Next time we're out would appreciate a follow and lead segment run and your feedback, really appreciate it.

Well I am still here.

Though I originally joined Kiwibiker in 2004 (started riding in 2006) I went walk-about in early 2009. Since I returned to Kiwibiker in May 2009 there have been numerous events and activities I have participated in:

My Blogg
Motorcycling and My Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder OCPD
Perhaps some may understand why I deliberately spent the first 1000km riding in Stokes Valley in May/June 2006 before I ventured further afield. Also I unashamedly discussed my family background and my career as a ways and means of providing an insight to OCPD. Also I might add here that by ‘getting it down on paper’ of itself is a useful and therapeutic benefit.

Advance Rider Refresher Training
September 2009 I completed my second Advanced course, the first being in February 2007. I encourage all riders to put this up on their calendar and seriously think about doing an initial advance course or returning to do the course again after several years.

Another Bike
November downsizing from my CB900 Hornet to the 250cc Kawasaki Ninja
The Hornet from new completed 45,000km in 27 mths and it was an economical decision to downsize for this summer season. With the following maintenance required on the Hornet – front and rear sprockets, chain, brake pads front and rear, another set of tyres and an extended service including a valve clearance, well there was a few thousand dollars in all that including workshop labour. So the wee Ninja has been a real joy to ride and when I bought it in November in the back of my mind was the prospect of selling it at the end of the daylight saving period. I have ridden over 75,000km since May 2006 (all recreational riding) and the wee Ninja it is up to 5000km now in three months already. I want to take time out and walk the golf course a little bit more often and playing in winter doesn’t bother me we have a good large group at my golf club for regular mid week events. Also there is a small matter of a teenage daughter and the probability of another car in the family – gee thanks dad.

The Ninja is available now see the link below.

Group Ride Guide
I was very pleased to see the Group Ride Guide posted up on this website. It is a useful item and hopefully gets the attention it deserves.

Novice and Returning Riders and ACC Submissions
Leading up to the Wellington ride to Parliament in November 2009, submissions were called for – I presented a view and this is contained in my blogg.

Mid-Week Programmed Riding Events
I noticed that when the Group Ride Guide was posted on the website that in practice there was a degree of reluctance (here in Wellington during Wednesday evening rides) to step up and organise/take responsibility and control. I suppose people, me included were concerned about litigation in the event of something going untoward during an ‘organised’ event.

Novice Riders and 250cc Pace Riding Events
Most recently I have co-ordinated two Tuesday evening rides in Wellington and the riding calendar is booked through each Tuesday until the end of March and daylight saving.

I personally would like to think that this whole topic can get some traction right across the Kiwibiker community. For my part here in Wellington in particular, there is no programmed route and destination riding events advertised on this website for this level of rider activity during the mid-week (and I suspect weekends too). I am very pleased with the last two rides and look forward for the level of interest growing. The facility exists in the calendar and in the Meeting/Events thread and I would like to encourage and see this used more actively during the mid-week rides next daylight saving 2010-2011. I have addressed this most recently in my blogg too.

Heads Up and Enjoy
I look forward to meeting and talking with the Kiwibiker community and when you see the wee green machine at the summit or over in the Wairarapa come over and say hello.

The wee Ninja sold last March, and the golf through winter was pretty limited with the rubbish weather, however I managed to shoot a few good scores and qualify for some knockout competitions.

Hmmm see the Hornet 600cc has dropped in price down to $11,995, I thought they were overpriced when brought on the market at $15,995.

Well the winter was miserable, but I managed to qualify for the two Match Play tournaments, top qualifier for one and as a result won the Junior Handicap Division Stroke Play annual trophy.

On another hobby/interest, I have been playing an acoustic guitar, well fumbling for two years or so and enjoying it. After looking at electric guitars for a few weeks, I took the plunge, well a wee splash and purchased an Ibanez IJX Startup Pack, and I am very pleased, very pleased with the new guitar. Now I am splitting my time across both practising my pentatonic and blues pentatonics, as well as cramming a lot of the theory in Triad structures and harmonizing majors, minors and sevenths. With the headphones on and playing some wonderful tunes the electric guitar has just added another dimension. Bit like stepping up from a 250cc to your next bike, speaking of which.......

I had two bikes on my watchlist, both 650's and believe you me I was tempted, very tempted. [Ah hum still am tempted.]

Good to hear from all of you that have posted up, sorry it has taken me a wee while to post up here in reply.

Moons ago my brother-in-law and I would stand around on a Sunday evening, steak on the barbie, beer in hand, and he would talk a whole lot of crap about bikes that I wouldn't understand. He not long bought a new 2004, Z750 back then, but his first road bike after some 20 plus years of not riding and previously it was trials riding etc. My oh my how times have changed.

Last night I enjoyed the Wellington Tuesday evening ride, the first of the 2010/2011 daylight saving period on a....wait for it...2004, Z750 and enjoyed the ride enormously. Six years old and only 29k km on the clock. He looks after it incredibly, and it is my intention not to let him down in looking after it when I take it for a ride once [or twice] a week. Thanks mate.

An electric guitar you are a dark horse, next it will be an electric bike, maybe.
I thought I'd give the TCWNR another run tonight after nearly 2 years away from
mid week riding and the mighty Daytona 675 seems to be the bike of choice tonight.
Might see you there.:woohoo::woohoo::woohoo:

Look forward to seeing you out there Katiepie next summer, as I am sure we all are.
Take it easy through winter and when the halo comes off perhaps we may hear that classical guitar strumming through the hills and in the valleys.

That's right, I was riding my brother in laws Z750 occasionally, and earlier this month riding home, I knew that come next daylight saving I would be enjoying the journey again.

It's been an interesting past 24hrs if my recent blog is anything to go by.

Meanwhile, hopefully tomorrow the weather will not be as bad as the forecasters say, and a ride from Silverstream to Eastbourne then back along the Hutt Valley hill suburbs of Korokoro, Normandale and Belmont will be enjoyable. Allow 60-90minutes for the ride starting at McDonalds Silverstream.

I had a slow speed low side across diesel in the middle of the week last July. Broke my collarbone, couple of ribs and displaced a couple of ribs.

Good end to the story though the bike received an excellent make-over and arrived back in Wellington yesterday.
