Anyone interested?

The idea is you take a photo of your bike in front of a landmark or anything really and post the pic up with a clue as to where/what it is.
The first one to post their pic up of the same place is next to have a go.

You just can't use old photos. You have to ride there and take them.

Can be accessable from seal/gravel/etc.

http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=378553

I'll post up a pic later today and lets see what happens.

Does top of the south include the bottom of the north?

this is a really cool idea

Willdat?

If it included the bottom of the north then buck would be passed and probably get stuck in one or other of the islands until there was another invasion...it does seem like a good idea though!

Very, very interesting fellah. Look out for a 3-part doco to be screened sometime (went to the launch/preview last year), it'll be worth the watch.

Oh yeah, that's the ride I holed the sump.

That mark? That's where I got stuck and had to burn the tyres to stay warm.

Oh that's the time I chewed my leg off as I was stuck under the bike and desperate for a latte.

That one? I was run over and killed by a runaway 1150GS. But I'm better now.

At this stage I need new rockers, cam shaft, valve seals, possibly valves, and a few other bits and pieces, might as well chuck a set of rings at it while I'm there, hope it doesn't need a new piston too, I'll know when later when I can face going back to the shed.

Well, I did wait till 3pm, it was a bit chilly this morn and I had the hoovering to do first! I thought the frost would be well gone by this afternoon, but the Maitai valley, true to form, had bloody permafrost everywhere, real slippery even on the hardpacked gravel, let alone frozen clay. The DRZ was squirming around more than the cat when ya stand on it's tail, I had one brown undies moment at the bottom of the caretakers cottage hill just before the creek, the bike drifted sideways big time on the ice. No dropsies tho.:Punk: ... Unlike the boy racer who'd just rolled his crappy Nissan after driftin everywhere up the Maitai gravel, he'd lost it on the seal by the river. Shame he didn't put it into the creek and put it out of it's misery.

It WAS only a suggestion.so was HTFU. Lighten up, fellah, I was just replying in kind. Stop being a purse-carrying blouse-wearing nancy-boy. Almost all the tags so far have been on sealed roads. There's been nothing stopping you from grabbing a tag on the seal and placing it elsewhere on the seal, should you wish to play. Indeed this was mooted as likely to happen when the idea kicked off. No skin off our nose, as has been said, we bend both ways. :woohoo: It's a Nike moment: Just do it. :scooter:

Mate, the adventure 'arena' is one of the most inclusive in motorcycling-dom. We don't care what, how, when, where or why you ride, we'll take the piss regardless. But as soon as you say 'seal only' its like, nah, pass, not interested.

Hi zk-awesome & welcome to the Nelson crew. First some housekeeping:

1 - change your name - it sucks big time
2- get another bike. I had a GB400tt & it was cool. It was black, black as night... however won't cut the mustard when we take you out screaming & writhing into the backblocks for the initiation.
3- Don't listen to any north islanders - They can't ride for shit.
4 - KLRs are the only thing worth riding if you want to look cool & pull hot chicks - well apart from Mrs Jatz' Tenere...& an old GS PD...& Africa Twins are OK at a pinch too..
5- forget 5 its not interesting
6- Getting lost is an important part of developing into a well rounded adult
7- Gonna get some mallowpuffs now

this might be a good time to introduce myself to the Nelson KB community.Welcome to the nuthouse. Beer's in the fridge, I'll have one while you're up.

The GB doesn't like the gravel (or maybe it's me :spanking: - I took it up Dovedale hill last weekend as a bit of a detour, but I won't be doing that again, the back end was all over the place "They all do that, sir."

Road bikes can do gravel quite merrily, you just have to ride them accordingly. The GB shouldn't be too bad, being a 'standard' bike with taller narrower tyres and a more upright riding position.

There is rule number 9 which says, and i state:

Do not under any circumstances post a thread asking the following, or a near facsimile of.

" I am about to buy an adventure bike and I have narrowed it down to either a KLR or a DR, what are your opinions??"

This rule is for the protection of your sanity, and also after reading all the pros and cons of KLR and DR ownership, it is also designed to stop you getting a KTM.

klrs are the best

I've just upgraded to a Honda GB250Whaddya know? I had a CBX250, loved it, did heaps of gravel riding on it. Just found some interesting notes at the Good Honda Guide (http://www.goodmotorcycles.com/usedguidhonda.html):

HONDA CBX250
1984-86, 248cc DOHC single,
31hp, 100mph, 70mpg, 310lbs
Rare upgrade to the RS with superior top and bottom ends, the engine lasts 30-45k. Top end most likely to give trouble, some bikes have alternator problems and eat cheap chains. Excellent chassis eventually suffers from gummed up front disc, shagged rear shocks and demise of all the chassis bearings but the good mixture of flickability, frugality and performance overwhelms such irritants.
HONDA GB250
1987 on, 249cc DOHC single,
30hp, 95mph, 65mpg, 290lbs
Popular Jap market retro single based on the CBX250RS, which occasionally turns up as a grey import. Still available as a new bike in Japan. Highly practical device with a useful turn of speed and, front disc excepted, very practical for UK roads. Most spares will swap with the rarer CBX250.

Thanks for all the big welcomes. You're right about the lame name, must think of something cooler/wittier! And yes GB400/500's are cool as, but yeah probably not heaps faster than my 250.
See some of you out there (not on the gravel), I'm going for a thrash round the moutere on saturday if things pan out :niceone:

Over the Spooners and before the main turnoff to the left (golf club way) up those forestry roads there...

Search Google Maps (http://maps.google.com/) for "Biggs Rd".

CrazyFrog
5th June 2009, 22:51
Access it from Stock Rd (tarseal route to St Arnaud), follow Spooners Top Rd, then it branches onto Biggs Rd. Follow Biggs right back to SH6 down by Golden downs turnoff at Valley Rd. Use Google maps at 500ft zoom view to see forestry road names.
There's a whole new world of adventure out there, you just gotta be brave, use your common sense and respect logging operations. Bloody luverly!

warewolf
6th June 2009, 11:11
Or try the direct approach from SH6: as you come down off Spooners saddle and after the road crosses to the other side of the river, TL opposite Mt Norris Reserve at the sign that says "Mt Norris 32". 3km straight up there to the intersection with Biggs Rd. :first:

It was funny. We got to the top of a hill (eventually) and started taking off a few of the many layers of excess clothing adventure riders wear and Paul says with a smug look "Arn't you hot?" standing there in MX gear...

Nothing like greasy slick clay, and slippery rocks hiding in brown puddles to let you know are actually riding and remind you to pay attention. Then there were also the downed trees on the Maungatapu, but despite the Maitai being in flood, the water crossings were all at tame/summer levels. Nearly ran over a 40cm fish in the ford below the caretaker's cottage.

I stuck em on because they were there, and I could, not because of the SBC :innocent: and it does look like a 250 baja, just need to make a mounting frame maybe with a grille in front(and a ralley type fairing)
They were donated from a gsxr750, to go on the Big.
And they now work!!!, there's no regulator that I can see so I just hooked in to a live wire when the bike was running and an earth(through a fuse of course)
