I would, but it's about a 5 hour round trip. Been working all day, and one of my staff just rang in sick, so I've got to go work a few hours of night shift tonight as well.

Besides, I don't think the Mudbug would make it.

Haha!

BTW, I think I may need a new rear tyre before going anywhere near Cnut Hill - when i saw Phil's new rear D606 on his Big, I realised mine is well rooted in comparison and I've only got 3500k's on it - was a tad unwieldy on that slick-as-snot yellow clay on descents on Monday! That Big DOES sound nice and goes like stink with that 46 sprocket on the back - he was tearin up hills in 2nd all afternoon! Maybe we could encourage him to take the Big up Cnut Hill, could be interesting! ;)

I must say, that area where the tag is, must be one of the slipperiest bloody tracks I've ever ridden in winter. Crazy place in the wet with shit tyres.:shit:

Oh well, off to work I go.

+1 on that!

I'll be honest and say I have purposely avoided that yellow stuff in there this winter! But Phil needed his D606's scrubbed in and the first part and middle part of that track from the direction we entered is nice and stoney so seemed obvious place to get the scrubbing-in done in one ride! Downside being my having to deal with the descents on the yellow snot! :shit: I'd rather ride Odlins Rd than that yellow clay any day!
We only had a couple of hours or so to play but had a little explore up a couple of side tracks too, ones I hadn't been on! (one of which was labelled for cyclists & horses only! ) All good fun!

Phil's well hooked LOL! His partner is now coming to terms with being an ADV widow!

twotyred "I have no idea where this even might be... "

Like twotyred I also had no idea where this loghauler might be, so my wife asked her workmates in the DOC Recreation & Historic team where it was. Orange Hut in Akatarawa forest was the immediate answer.

OK now I know but so also do Bart & Marks - and marks is just down the road in Raumati. Hmm slow day at work, right I'm taking a 1/2 days leave.

It's going to be wet in there so I will enter from the Maungakotukuku entrance which has gravel roads. Wrong, 5km in & on a greasy uphill the back end steps out 90* & we hit the deck.

I must say, that area where the tag is, must be one of the slipperiest bloody tracks I've ever ridden in winter. Crazy place in the wet with shit tyres.:shit:
I piledrive my chest onto the end of the handlebars - f...ing hell, eyewatering pain & mucho rapid pacing back & forth for the next few minutes. Remembering my own advice to Paladin (when he crunched his vertebrae) - wait 5 minutes then get on the bike & HTFU. Meanwhile I'm realising its not a good idea to be riding a 200kg bike alone and with no cellphone coverage. I manage to pick up the bike, no damage & we all know it's easier to go uphill than down and the Orange hut is uphill, so on we go being very, very careful. Hmm theres a few more intersections than the last time I was here, 25 years ago. But joy this intersection is signposted & the hut is just around the corner. Tag completed & we are heading home, down the greasy hills with one particularly butt clenching slide but arriving safely at the entrance.

Great sense of satisfaction to get this tag. Will try to find another challenge for you before the weekend.

Nice one Andy!

We went in from the Maungatuk end too - nice and greasy aye!!! Glad I'm not the only one getting the back end of the bike coming round! The descents on the way back out were a bit too clenching for my liking!

You did damn well mate BUT I think you are mad goin in there solo where's there's no cellphone coverage - not exactly many passers-by coming along on weekdays!

Good on ya mate!

I know a chap that went for a solo ride in there many moons ago,on his XR600...he rode off a bank and twisted his ankle and it took him 8 painful hours to crawl/hop out... His Mrs was furious:dodge:

Phil will be ok on anything we do mate. He HAS ridden offroad before, just not recently, and he looks well comfortable on the Big; I certainly wasn't keeping up with him once he got the feel of the bike!

I actually think Phil would find Sutherlands a total blast, but he'll love any of that stuff in the 'Rapa either way, just being out in the middle of nowhere with us lot!

After yesterday's trip I wanted to avoid all greasy clay so I went to the beach.
So follow the coastal track and you will see this structure from a long way off. You will have to cross some beach to get close enough for a photo. But don't be tempted to continue going to the sign on the next point, because the sand is very, very soft.
Amazingly I had previously been thru & returned using a Tourance.:clap:

Andy told you I was going to do this!.

Here are the locations.

1. Karori Lighthouse (original tag). Not so clear this am
2. Devils Gate (last tag)
3. Red Rocks quarry
4. The new Mystery (South Coast) Location

The new location is reachable with road & adventure bikes.

Not that time, but have before, and down to the various pylons and along the top to the gate before it drops down to Kaitoke. That was on the DR-Z though before the tracks were improved. It was fucken mega on the DRZ. I had a stuffed MT21 on the back so just fanged the bejesus out of it up the rocks. Tuns of pull and y'd just launch over stuff when the tyre bit on the rock base.

Is this thing broken ?

KapitiLizard
11th May 2010, 10:22
Nope, not broken, just slow :)

I have plans for the next tag but need daylight to get there. However I am happy to place a more local (less adventure bike) tag if people are getting serious withdrawal symptoms.

Here's the new one taken tonight after work.

There's plenty of graded gravel up to the 1st of 3 gates. After the gate it gets rougher (track, not a road). Sign at 1st gate says private property but access is no problem as long as you stay on the track.

interesting you got that far, i thought the gate was locked.

see if i can get this one sorted..bit busy at work now days..

if i haven't tag it by this Sunday night i wont get there..

got away from home at 1.30pm, arrived home 6.30pm,
we went further past the rock wall as far as we could go. just before the locked gate at white rock.. was good to get on the bike after a week in the trenches..
it was worth going out to get this tag, is a great piece of coast line, but a big shame 90% of the road is sealed now....

yep well done on picking the clouston park one up as well, couldn't make it to easy for the non adventure bikes but thought it was a good to put them close together for a change, and hopefully get it moving around a bit. Thanks Andy for the hint to where the new one is, I thought it might of been up that way.

ill have to say KapitiLizard has won the doz for his efforts to the rock wall....+10 points thats a fairly nasty off road track out there

ill only travel to get these if there really worth the trip... cost a lot a money to fill a KTM 9FIDDY now days....

Go thru the stream, up Perhams Rd, turn left into Whakatiki Rd onto the Pram track, thru Karapoti Gorge , Karapoti Rd & onto Akatarawa Waikanae Rd. Remember the 30km speed limit. WOW so many roads must be why our bikes need to have rego + wof? But thankfully I've never seen a speed camera in there.

1 Bruce suggested here but the bike wouldn't fit
2 So back to the carpark
3 Carpark sign

Are there any signs say specifically that no bikes are allowed? :innocent:

andy mac
30th May 2010, 15:25
No signs at the bridge but it would be foolish to take your bike down there & expect to get it out again.
Find the carpark sign, we went past it on the post CCA ride.

junkmanjoe
30th May 2010, 16:47
would have been a better idea to tag a more accessible place for all bikes to tag, so this game doesn't come to a a halt again..

if it wasn't for our fellow roadies, game would be still dead in the back pages.....................................

Jees have I made this adventure tag too hard? 20km of winding tarseal, 5 km off road, Ive even seen a 950 there. :devil2:

Of course first you have to know where it is. Second the weather has to improve.

Of course first you have to know where it is. Second the weather has to improve.

Third you need a bike to do 5km off road, fourth you need to be that slight bit nuts that keeps us all here
