1 - Castlepoint? Oh shit, we were meant to be looking for Castlehill!
2 - Awesome little general store - talk about odle worlde!
3 - What a combination, lol.
4 - And the gravel starts! While filling the gas tank from our "reserve" tank on the side of the road before hitting the metal, two farmers on quaddies turned up from each direction and starting chatting to us, not worried in the least that they were completely blocking the road.
5 - More offroad than your DR, Squiggles!

Hey does anyone remember when a bunch of Honda Club riders skipped out on paying for their meals down south and a whole lot of KBers chipped in to pay the hotel the bill to keep up a good 'biker image'? Anyway, the folks at Glenross Lodge sound like very nice people so maybe if a bunch of us who are enjoying reading your adventures but were unable to assist you along your way could chip in like $10 each to pay for your nights accomodation? Anyone else keen?

Shouldn't be too bad - our big nemesis is, of course, hills.

We'll have all of those except the sleeping bags. We really have to keep the amount we're carrying down to a bare minimum, which is why we can't take a tent.

Not even taking spare clothes, other than some extra pairs of socks! (Considering some changes of clothes ahead along the way ;))

Brilliant, hope you guys havea great trip!
If I had my old A100 I'd be keen to tag along, alas it rusted long ago!
We are in Palmerston North, if you break down/ need a rest in the Manawatu!

Have stayed at Brain's Place Backpackers at Tokomaru Bay (about 90km north of Gisborne) and can recommend it - saves trying to carry the tent.

I Happen to know your mother in law and im pretty sure anything you have done in the past 10 years wouldnt suprise her......
The complete opposite would be true for the first 10 :gob:

So we woke up at 10am. Little bit late but we didn't have far to go. Breakfast and final move of all the reserve fuel to the main tank and we were set to go, at noon. We left our mark on the last page of the visitor book and headed off up the drive we go to thank our gracious hosts and give our farewells, but alas, no-one was home. We made our way off into the rain along route52, with the intention to finish the whole road beofre dark. We've now abandoned plans; hopes and ambitions are what we call those now.

Some distance down the road, having just been chased by a pair of rather fast running dogs, we stop to swap seats - I reckon if I sit behind jafa I won't get so wet ;) - and continued on our epic journey through the hills and twisties of what was increasingly not an ideal surface. Eventually we stop just shy of Wimbeldon, to have a little chat about pillions not appreciating late braking, and have a look at the war memorial. There was a sense of history about the place; the memorial, with poppies still visible in the moat, was for the 12 local men who went to fight in "The Great War", ie before it became the first world war. The small school behind it looked fairly old too - one building was most certainly older than the memorial. We carried on our way through past the local hotel and kept riding happily along through until we hit a large intersection: route 52 went left, the beach was 8km to the right, and the Porangahau township was 400m ahead. We decided it Was time for lunch....

Brown Fury made an immediate impression on the locals at the pub/hotel, and we had a quick chat before entering. Inside we were greeted with another awesome pub, and as I enjoyed one of the best seafood chowders I've ever had and Jafa enjoyed an excellent thai chicken curry, we got to talk to the locals and the barman and really enjoyed the whole atmosphere of the place. Parts of the building were apparently 140 years old, and what with the friendly faces and local rugby scores up on the wall we got a real sense of community there that suddenly became painfully absent from life back in auckland.

The barman asked if we were taking the coastal route... We were dead keen. When it became evident we would be hitting backroads with essetially no map we were even more interested - we had a whole 3 hours of daylight left, so we'd be fine!:D
On our way out Brown Fury gave a further show by popping a rather impressive wheelie in full view of the cheering crowd, :innocent: and in a trail of blue smoke we were off!

Now Jafa is still struggling to find our exact route, but it took us along another metal road along the beach and through several more pubs asking for directions - for some reason people kept directing us back to the main highway:pinch: but we held the course direct to meet Conquiztador in Te Awanga, and countless sheep encou cow) later we finally emerged in civilisation.

We took Brown Fury onto the beach and suddenly realised road tyres don't work as well as knobblies on wet pebbles. we stood watching the surf, in the rain, as our phones came to life with full reception. All these txts from the night prior trying to see if we were ok was a bit of a chuckle, as was both of us watch a particuarly large wave form, both think "shit, that's pretty big", and both run back from the water as it came rushing up to meet us.

A few calls and a bit of riding later we met up with Conquiztador to swap stories, dicuss the finer things in life over a few beers, and dry our gear by the fire.

Brown Fury has been absolutely terific thus far, never missing a beat, and has managed to get us all the way from masterton to here without running out of gas. Tomorrow we plan to leave first thing in the morning, and make it to gisborne for lunch and maybe invest in a range of plugs, some more oil seeing as we lost the last one back at castlepoint, and top everything up with gas before heading to the cape. Where we run out of daylight we'll stop and seek accomodation, and on tuesday we'll visit the cape and continue to tauranga.

Wednesday sees us at coroglen tavern and then further up to stay with blackbird, and thursday we will be on our final leg back to auckland :2thumbsup

We'll stop at Kaiaiua for lunch on our way so you will all know how we're running for time to get up One Stump Hill.

Sorted them two beds last night and after a few beers, some story swapping and a meal all were happy. (We got talking about 50cc old Nifty 50 scooters and someone started pondering about doing a similar trip using a couple of them. Apperently the resale value is good, as they are worth a few bobs in the bigger cities...)

I had to scroll back to the first post to confirm that yep, the boys were supposed to provide the beer! But as they so gallantly offered to get rid of my Guinness (after we had finished my Heinekens) I had no problem with the change of plan.

Today is promising to be a rainfree day here in HB and same up towards Gizzy, so with a little of luck their travel up to Poverty Bay will be a nice one. And as the road there is nice too it should be a day to remember (as all the others on this crazy trip of theirs).

Time to start the day.

The morning looked good. No rain. After some brekky and packing up the little 2 wheeler started with a puff of smoke and took them down the road. And that's when the heavens opened. So much for drying all the gear in fron of the fire last night.

Took some pics and a vid but somehow nothing turned up? So you all just have to use your imagination and trust me when I say that they are on their way up to Gizzy.

I followed them a little bit on the road, and that 100cc thingy with 2 up can motor! Last night I was told that they had not filled up with petrol since Masterton and it was one of the first things they needed to do. But they whizzed past the first petrol station... so I hope that means they have plans on stopping at the next.

and to think it was I that started the ball rolling by inspecting the Beast here in ChCh as a 'pre-purchase' check lol!
That old 80cc blue stroke Suzuke was never gonna do the entire trip, Im surprised it made it as far as it did!!!
The story goes it sat in an old fellas lounge room for 15 years untouched before the guy here in ChCh bought it and ressurected it into life. Then then these two maniacal 'students' saw it on trademe and asked if anyone in ChCh would look at it for them. I agreed and the rest is history....oh, and so is the Beast. I guess it just couldn't face leaving the Mainland so suicided as a final solution.
Anyway, I gotta hand it to these guys, its a journey only a coupla crazy naive students would undertake in the middle of winter no less. :cold:

So we awoke to a brilliant sunrise over the pacific and everything looked set to be good. By the time we were warming up Brown Fury, however, it had started to rain quite steadily. The trip though nelson was uneventful - while we did get lost it wasn't hard to just keep riding until we hit a highway - and we gassed up only the main tank on our way out.

The next FOUR hours was spent riding through the shittest weather to get to gisborne - we'd keep thinking we were half way there to only see a sign telling us we had over 100km to go. Riding in the wet is ok, but riding in the pouring rain, freezing wind, and poor visibility is not fun. At 66km to go it finally stopped raining (we had ridden ahead of it, somehow) so we finally disembarked, let all the pooled water in our gloves/pants/boots drain, and then swapped seats to finish the journey to Gisbourne in sunshine. We would've stopped for scenic pics but the camera got wet and died.

By the time we got there we weren't happy. The wind was freezing and we were very cold and tired. Shivering, we bought some more oil and gassed everything up, then set off down the road for warm food - indian was the meal of the day and feeling somewhat better I donned a second layer of thermals before beginning the re-oiling process on the side of the road right in the centre of gisborne.

To, re-oil Brown Fury, without the use of a funnel, we have to remove the seat. This in itself is not difficult, but getting it to fit back on afterwards is the challenging part, compounded by short tempers and local gangs of schoolchildren roaming the streets and asking endless questions.

After this operation is completed we check our financial situation at the nearest ATM. It doesn't look good. I'm broke, Jafa will be shortly. we take out some cash for the backpackers. Hopefully studylink comes through on tuesday.

On our way out we stopped by the local gas station for directions. Apparently the road north is closed due to slips. "Highway Could Be Closed For Weeks" was the local headline, featuring a picture of perfectly passable terrain - There's a road near my place I ride every day that looks just as bad. So we ring-a-ding-ding north up sh35 for some time. We reach tologa bay with a few hours of daylight remaining so decide to continue onwards to tokomaru bay.

As the road continues there's a few washouts and spots where the road goes to one lane for a few metres, but overall she's all sweet. After a fair while we finally hit a roadblock. We stop and ask if it's passable and while the first guy say's she'll be sweet, the second tells us to go take the detour. Apparently it's mostly gravel and will take an hour. Given we have only an hour of daylight left we oblige and take the detour, rather than loose that hour assessing the slip that might turn out impassable.

What the guy neglected to mention is that this "detour" was an hour and a half of mud, loose gravel, mud, more mud, logging trucks, rouge sheep, rouge goats, rouge cows that run away from us down the road, at the same ace as we're riding along it too (can we add cows to our list of passed vehicles?) and one rouge horse running along the road towards us... when we finally emerge back on the highway my legs, boots, and the whole of Brown Fury are covered in dirt. It is dark and due to all the low revs and having the light on for courtesy we now have no lights. We go to take a photo but the camera is still dead.

We ask a passer-by for directions and sure enough we have to backtrack to tokomaru bay. 15km later and one very near crash on roadworks thanks to poor headlights and even poorer signage
we arrive in the bay and head for a backpackers. The place is deserted but unlocked, we would call the owner but my phone has too little credit and jafa's phone has suffered the same fate as his camera, so we go get some fish and chips.

Now here's the best part: Talking to the locals, apparently beurocrats have dicked around with the slipped road and issuing a contract for over a week now, and only just put up the detour which DID infact use a farmer's farm track and few forestry roads. Only yesterday did the LPG truck get through, and the gas station is about to run out of petrol (which is needed to generate electricity in some of the homes). The whole area is suffering shortages due to slack response from the government (specifically transit or whoever they're called now), and companies not wanting to change shipping arrangements to bring things in from the north.
To top it all off, the 90 minute detour starts and ends 10 minutes either side of the bay.
Also, it is perfectly passable for a motorbike.

Fuckers.

Atleast we've got a warm fire to dry out all our gear by.

Ive always found Bayride to be pretty helpfull (Cameron Road between 3rd and 4th Ave), DMNTD is one of their sales guys he is usually good to talk to.

How much of a fix up are we talking about?

Oh, and a second comment: You guys mention you throught you had got halfway to Gisborne only to see that there was 100K's left... Napier tp Gisborne is 213K's, so you had in fact done more then half distance!!!

Going the other way though it always seems to take for ever from where you can see Napier in the distance until you actually get there.

AND..... Welcome to "The Coast"!! That kind of shit has been going on for donkey's years up the East Coast (and probably will continue for another Donkey's year), the locals are used to it and most are pretty self sufficiant, unlike us urban dwellers who panic if the power goes off for a few hours.

Crikey, after all that, I think any other caper you go on will be a walk in the park (filled with booby traps, land mines and psychopaths hiding behind bushes).

So we started our day at 9:30 buy tracking back along the highway to inspect this slip that has been causing so much grief - we could have crossed it, and so could any light vehicle with treaded tyres had they not built a dirt wall to prevent it. We went back down the hill to get some pies for breakfast and tell the locals the situation, and found our brakes to be somewhat less effective than we'd perhaps like them to be.

Studylink has apparently come through, so as we ate our week old pies we had a chat with the locals who had already being talking about their new visitors, and got to know yet another happy community who's present and future are uncertain after the loss of a single road.

The road north was pretty shocking, to say the least. Somehow we made it to te araroa by 12:30 and stopped for a drink. Little did we know those 500ml flavoured milk bottles would be the last thing we consume for ten hours. We had a sit on the beach which is apparently made out of driftwood, and then set off along the closed road to the cape at 1pm. The road was mostly narrow gravel with patches of mud and plenty of slips. I kinda got into dirtbike mode and we tore through it without incident (a few wheelies though). The diggers were kind enough to move their arms out of our way and before long we were tearing along our own personal sealed racetrack, before returning to a narrow dirt road around the bluff.

Due to running out of gas in the main tank at the very end of the road, we didn't notice any signage so thought the cape was a bit of a fail. It wasn't until later, whilst talking with some locals waiting for a digger to let them through, that we discovered there is infact foot access to the cape. Within 30 minutes were were heaving and panting our way up the hill -Brown Fury having been thwarted by the gate- up to the lighthouse to learn a bit about the local history and typical poor NZ planning. It took 22 years to decide to put the lighthouse on east island, and another 22 years (and three dead children) to realise that the mainlaind is a much better place than a crumbling island.

At 3pm we blatted back into the village for lunch, only to find it had all shut up shop, and that petrol was $1.84 per litre; Sucks to live there!

We continued west (with the sun somehow setting on our right), through more mint roads until part way through an AWESOME set of twisties we came across some more slips, some of which had the road sliding down the hill and subducting under itself. For repairs they had just put some hotmix down fill in the step but didn't actually smooth it out at all. We hit it in a pretty bad way (jafa piloting, too low a gear to get any squat on the rear or weight off the front) and while I worried about my rims the whole bike got airborne and we both came off the seat.

Now, at the speed we were travelling, there was no "good" way to hit this, and we definetly didn't do it the best way, but nonetheless we both landed back on the bike and managed to carry on through the next corner and carried on riding.

The road became painfully windy, going up and over hills rather than around through the flats, but still came deep into bays to cross rivers, so our approach to Tauranga was painfully slow. Eventually we could see the mount sticking out of the sea on the horizon, and then the land around and behind it, but it remained there, on the horizon, until there was too little light to see. We stop and consider a backpackers, but decide to continue on to tauranga, having consumed only a single pie each and a bottle of milk so far today.

Now with myself at the helm, we are travelling at a fair pace along a straight part. Brown Fury has been making a lot of noises lately, some from the chain, some from the brakes, a little from the motor, but the power is still good and the plug is still healthy. Right as I'm powering into the band in top gear, the rear suddenly locks and engine stalls. I have the clutch in within the instant but no idea as to what just happened. We roll to a stop and inspect the bike. All wheels work fine though the rear is a bit grumbly and both brakes squeal, the bike starts fine and seems ok despite the sudden stall from redline but does make an annoying ticking/rattle noise that may or may not be new, the rear sprocket looks good but I suspect the chain is buggered. We can't see it due to the chain guard but no doubt it's badly stretched and worn considering all the mud we've gone through and having both of us loading it up. It could be an issue with the transmission at the gearbox end, especially considering that at least 5 times just today we've forgotten the race pattern shift and voilently downhifted instead of upshifting.
We get back on the road and the motor is jut as good as it was before, so I suspect the chain, at max speed and loading, had skipped and jammed, and then come free again when I clutched it. We carry on and all is well, but we're taking it easy so as not to tempt the chain again.

It soon became dark and the full moon was still on the horizon. Our headlight is especially useless tonight, but atleast the brake light makes the whole red gas can on the rear light up... if only the brake light would turn off without having to manually pushing the front brake lever forwards after braking....

Then, going into a particuarly dark corner, Brown Fury got all wobbly on us, and into the next too. We continued wobbling to the top of what must've been a small mountain before stopping, absolutely sure the rear was going flat. We hop off to inspect and it's fine... Odd. We weigh up our options, but considering there's no signal nor any credit on our only working cellphone it would appear we only have one option. We head down the hill and all is fine, so perhaps it was just the result of both of us steering the bike blindly round corners with potentially uneven surfaces.

Over in the next bay we're tearing along, tempting fate again by *just* edging into the power band in top gear again, when *boof* the bike is completely sideways at 100kph:shit:

Clutch is immediately in as the bike whips from left to right and the unmistakable noise of a blown tyre comes flapping from the rear. Through sheer determination and skill we coast it through until a ferocious Brown Fury comes to a stop in a driveway. Immediately we're off the bike celebrating what was very nearly a very nasty highside. :wari:

A local, Steve, invites us in for coffee/beer and lets us use his phone to ruin jafa's mum's night. A few txts later she's on her way with a trailer from tauranga to pick us up from hawai bay, so we walk Brown Fury back down the road for a kilometer to see if the motor camp could help. We ended up on the beach watching Who's Line Is It Anyway and Top Gear, hungry and cold, while dew slowly formed on us. Good thing airport security removed the cement from our puncture repair kit:rolleyes:

Jafa's Mum arrives with pies and after scoffing those we load Brown Fury into it's cage. We hop in the car and begin the three hour drive back to Tauranga.

So, how do I graze several vertebrae and fuck up my elbow? After a few km I thought it might be a good idea to remove the key from Brown Fury, just in case. We pull over, I climb up the cage, pull the key and jump backwards onto the ground; except my boot is caught in the cage. Luckily my toe slider broke off and freed me but by that point it was far too late. I land backwards onto my hands, elbow and back as I try to keep my head from splitting open on the rock hard chipseal. Unfortunately I left my jacket in the car. A painful reminder of how hard and unforgiving the road surface can be.

Lesson learnt: ATGATT ALL THE TIME

All boy racers should be sent on elderly two-smoker recovery trips to lick them into shape and cure them of gheyness. Someone suggest it to aunty 'Crusher' Collins. It'd be a vote winner for sure. Survival skills boot camp.

This trip is the new definition of epic. All future SMC adventures will be compared to this in future to determine whether they meet the official SMC definition of Epic - ie, this trip.

Andrew - I suggest you take a leaf from the poor steadiness-challenged souls who permanently wear a helmet in case of mishap.

it was the tube that went - those chinese tyres will probably outlast the bike!

I might add the large radius profile of the tyre, and tread pattern, has been great for this sort of riding considering the amount of offroading we've been doing, as compared to a "modern" tyre shape/tread

And those chicken strips are well and truly gone now too :woohoo:

Today we thought we'd take a day off to give Brown Fury a checkup and get the tube repaired. We began by removing the wheel and giving the rim a dry scrub before taking it into a shop. The brakes are all good after a wipe with a rag and adjustment, chain is a fair bit slack and has a tight spot, and overall there isn't actually anything wrong with this fine bit of honda engineering, so we set off for the shop.

We visit Bayride motorcycles and bump into DMNTD who tries to sell us on the new R1, the first of which I've seen in the flesh. It's a bit 'meh', but sounds good with two bros. pipes and looks good in white/grey with anodised red chassis. A coffee later and the tube is done and we grab another spare plug too. We're back 10 minutes later for chain lube and transmission oil.

Back in the garage we drain the gearbox. It's got pretty good oil. Owell. The plug is a bit crappy from us not thrashing it so new plug goes in. Wheel back on, chain tension and done.

Well, that was easy....

Then comes a call from squiggles - him and danae have come to visit us! We watch sunday's taped motoGP and finally get jafa's phone working. He has a lot of txts....


Not much else to say really. See you guys friday I guess...

Was good to meet the crew! TOTO and I reached Tairua early, ate a leisurely lunch before deciding to see if we could meet up the mad lads! Whangamata turn off, they appeared as we were about to use them as an excuse to ride that way! :innocent:

Riding back to Tairua, Blackbird promptly also has to do the u-turn trick :lol:

A bit of a chin-wag at the servo and off we rode towards Coroglen tavern for lunchies (TOTO and I used this as an excuse to eat again, mmmm scallop burger :drool:)

Was great to catch up with the news, been a whiles since I seen these two plucky blighters :yes: Blackbird was a scholar and a gentleman, nice Blackbird as well (funny that! ;) )

(I am very tired so excuse any incoherences)

Squiggles and Danae left us very early this morning after watching the motoGP, and combined with last nights coughing fits, a sleep-in was in order while the family worked around me. Shortly thereafter I was presented with the age old problem of What does one do with half a pack of delicious bacon, toast, eggs, old mashed spud and a warm pan deep with bacon fat? Cook (deep fry) it all at once and use the bread to soak up whatever's left, of course!

We left at 11, headed for a coro loop. 1Km down the road we ran out of gas - There was NO way we were getting to Tauranga on Brown fury last night. A near 12 o'clock wheelie later and we're on the road, only stopping for air from a dogy pump and to chat up an r6 rider who had made a rather dickhead passing manuvuer earlier in the day.

Further still down the road and we bump into Toto and GiJoe, closely follwed by blackbird shortly before hitting tairua. We talk shit, catch up, and find how crappy that last air pump was. No time to dilly dally! We continue riding through to coroglen for lunch, but even with good pressure Brown Fury still has a wobble. Toto and GIJoe bust out the cameras and seek to capture Brown Fury on film! They also made good bodyguardss so all is forgiven.

Later, after arrival at blackbird's sweet pad in coro town, much discussion and a roast chicken, we go down to look at the battery on Brown Fury - good voltage but the cells are a bit dry. Otherwise, Brown Fury shows off its good condition (cheers, Paul) and we top up the water.

Seriously, not much happened today - we even got here before dark, although the driveway was almost too steep to get up with just one rider.

The weird wobbling, our fellow riders can point out, is due to the chassis visibly flexing tortionally. lol. Also, the chain is real noisy despite the recent tension and lube and the pulsing is getting worse.

The plug is mint, as are those photos of us riding by.....


I'm knackered.

Just this moment got back to Coro after escorting the guys down to Kopu so they should be tucking into fish 'n chips at Kaiaua by now!

It was a real privilege to meet some young guys who are prepared to step outside their comfort zone and undertake such and awesome challenge:clap::clap:. It was also a privilege to follow that little Honda, listening to the howl of the expansion chamber and smelling that glorious burnt 2 stroke oil. Sigh.....

And to GIJoe1313 and Toto, great to meet you at long last and pleasure to ride with you - drop in any time you're passing.

Well, I parted ways with Brown Fury and the pair wot is straddling it, as well as Danae and Gijoe1313 (complete with his pillion!) about 20 minutes ago at Clevedon.

Met Piratejafa and Motorbyclist at Kaiaua, had a scoff of luvverly chips and a crab stick inna bun, then proceeded to scoff at a bunch of retirees on their so-called touring bikes - not a 100cc ride between them!

Zapped... cruised... crawled to Clevedon, where with a merry tootle I headed left to my abode, as the motley crew headed toward Maraetai, bound for the tree-less hill, quite possibly via the St Heliers GP.

T'was good to catch up, look forward to the final instalment of this epic saga!

Well any excuse for a ride I say! :innocent: Got a pm from Donor about catching up with these two larrikins last night, so killing two birds with one stone, I also teed up with my pillion and she was keen to ride along too!

So picking her up early we did a pre-ride ride to chez Donors and then we blat off to Kaiaua, I was mildly surprised to see the lads sitting there grinning cheekily and with the lovely Danae also! :yes:

A bit of a chinwag and the scoffing of tucker and then off we rode! Donor split off at Clevedon and the rest of us carried through Maraetai/Whitford where I left them at Ti Rakau drive where Botany Honda was ... I had to drop off my pillion and get back to my apron and flipping burgers!

Great day for a ride, great to see the lads completing their journey and above all ... any excuse for a ride! :devil2: :msn-wink:

1. Om noms at Kaiaua. I was just heading up Kaiaua road and saw the two adventurers ring-a-ding-ding past the intersection. Victory fries were had all round.

We awoke to another stunning breakfast from our kind hosts, and while it was being prepared we informed Hanne (squiggles' missus) that despite her strict instructions not to let squiggles buy any more bikes, while we were gone he has bought r6kid's bucket racer.

We went down the road for gas and were on the road by 11am. Blackbird bought us some 'cajun kawai' from the corotown smoke house, and followed us all the way to kopu. On the way we found they are still working on those bloody bridges due to the initial design calculations being wrong, but are due to finally build a new kopu bridge soon - the traffic in the kopu intersection was the most we've seen since arriving in nelson. We bid our farewells and headed across the the plains.

40 minutes of over-revving and drafting later we arrived at kaiaua fisheries for lunch, where we met Danae, GiJoe (and pillion friend), and Donor. We left to continue our coastal route through maraitai for photos and moar twisties!

Eventually we made it to the city. The next 30 mintutes in auckland's rush-hour traffic was most definitely the most dangerous leg of our journey, but we did amuse a few aucklanders with our antics taking off from lights. We didn't take the motorway but probably could have considering it was stationary in both directions.

After a bit of stuffing around in cornwall park trying to find the summit road, we ascended the summit (only barely) and met Magua in the carpark. We made it! While we admired the view we witnessed some of NZ's worst parenting, and a bit of chatting later, we moved Brown Fury up onto the podium for photos.

After that was the descent down into the meelee that is auckland from 3pm to 6pm, and went round to squiggles' place for booze and to chillax with pizza and some delicious cajun kawai! Later that night we parted ways to head home. The journey was complete.

For the record, Brown Fury absolutely pwns an FXR 150 at the lights, but doesn't have the top speed to keep ahead. The only thing wrong with it is the badly stretched chain, and the poor lighting system typical of aged bikes. I've been asked whether or not I'm selling Brown Fury. I don't know yet - I want to keep the old girl but really can't justify the money for the amount of use she might get.... I'll wait til summer comes around and decide then, deending on my financial situation and the use she gets. Probably hit a few bucket track days at mt wellington in the meantime, just to see how she goes.

Also, there is going to be a mission to rescue our fallen comrade, The Beast, from paul's shed in nelson. We'll post up our plans along with a big youtube video shortly.

I knew that clutch cable was dodgy, was going to ask if it had snapped yet in the last post :)

Doh That's some bad luck. If he doesn't have it fixed yet then I know the brake levers are pretty cheap...

A friend and I in our student days rode on a TS 125 motorbike one Easter from Christchurch to Cheviot and return. We called in to fill up with petrol at a service station and the attendant told us our front wheel was about to fall off - Chrissy thought he was bonkers till he demonstrated the obvious - so we rather red faced allowed him to fix it.

So it is great to know that the adventurous spirit of students is still alive and strong!!! I suspect our water pump may have played up the morning of their departure so they may not have got a hot shower so I can't allow anyone to pay for less than what should have been available.
It was late and dark when they arrived here and having 4 boys of our own it was great to enjoy their company.

Thank you for offering - use the money to shout the guys a nice dinner when they get back to Auckland.

Hey does anyone remember when a bunch of Honda Club riders skipped out on paying for their meals down south and a whole lot of KBers chipped in to pay the hotel the bill to keep up a good 'biker image'? Anyway, the folks at Glenross Lodge sound like very nice people so maybe if a bunch of us who are enjoying reading your adventures but were unable to assist you along your way could chip in like $10 each to pay for your nights accomodation? Anyone else keen?



Yes I do as we were there with Zukin on the Ride for life i was the support driver and that was not all they did, even didnt pay all accomadation as well.
Comming out of Invercargil they forced Zukin's wife into the middle of road. We followed for quite somw time. They were shocking at the hotel as we were ther for tea also. Wounderful folks at the hotel and told us that any Kiwi biker were always welcome.

We are meant to be hitting up some wreckers tomorrow if I can find a car. I think only footpegs left to go at this point.

is there really anything that can be done to make the rvf any better looking? All i've managed to do is kit it out with some angry eyebrows and that's about it!

a pipe is an option, but would require endless tuning to get it right... maybe after the FI conversion.....

doubt it, BUT i did just give her a clean last night so might've gotten a bit of water in there. How would bad fuel cause this? looks like a spark plug melted hole rather than detonation, though the hole is somewhat off centre

I think it was really just a result of 5 minutes topped out open throttle, BUT, surely it would've happened before now if that was the case.


oh, and is that the standard carby etc? i might look at getting those fibre reeds if it's worthwhile, but then i may as well get a bigger carby and filter too

asked about fuel as it is a variable that might have changed, air leak somewhere maybe?

running 91 or 96?

the big power gains on an mb's induction are from going to a bigger` reed valve as they are only 2 petal std!!

expect gas consumption to go up heaps when you go for bigger varbs etc tho

best option for more power is a mild port, sort the transfer and exhaust port durations, might not be so good for touring then tho

hey, you! How is one meant to remove the air box from a 250 hornet? it seems the bike is built around it. I've gotten it out but it entailed the use of a hammer (ok, not quite, but i did need a screwdriver to lever the thing), some swearing, and a lot of wiggling, due to the helmet lock blocking it's clean exit. Next is to pull the carbs off and clean them; they seem to be well stuck on like all good 4 cyl 4 carb blocks.

and all this to get the number three bowl to cease flooding after my little brother dropped it<_< (deal being i fix this tonight, have money for re-bore tomorrow)

Made by Tony Ducas of DC Engineering in the United States, the Hy-tech racing reeds are a well established favourite in the two stroke engine market and come in two varieties.

The standard fibre reed, orange in colour, or the new longer lasting black coloured carbon fibre CF series racing reed for longer life.

The purpose of a fibre reed valve as compared to the original equipment steel reed valve is principally to avoid engine destruction on a reed failure but the new Hy-tech racing reeds actually improve horse power andthrottle response on most engines throughout their lifetime. Upon eventual failure, Hy-tech racing reeds cause zero engine damage due to the low mechanical strength of the reed fibre.


Simply replace the steel reed petals one for one with the Hy-tech reeds and re-assemble reed block. No other modifications are necessary except on bikes where pilot mixture may need richening to improve easy starting

for 20 bucks i dunno if i'll bother....

- use a magnet

- trust the filter will do it's job and do nothing

- or just blindly assume there is no aluminium in there.

- tip some diluted oil in and swirl it around a few times then take your finger out of the drain hole.

Failing that I have no idea.

You could use small hose with vacuum cleaner if small splatter. or blue tac on stick and poke in to remove most of splatter, Reminds me of earlier days (fs50 wrong size plug and full tit down road at taupo sudden loses of power no top on piston but still had rings crown gone):laugh:

just measured her up and the piston was stock size, so it might even be the original stock piston! (or never been rebored.... or gotten so bad it's been resleeved....:dry: yeah i'll go with stock piston :D)

carr engine services reckons $80 will see her right - bore it out as far as needed to cover the damage, buy piston to match new oversize, then hone to match piston:headbang:

wikipedia also thinks it's got a 97cc displacement, but the cylinder block pretty clearly states 99cc....

seems its had a stuck ring and serious blow by/no compresion

not siezed, happened because

dum dum dum

the top ring was upside down

freed it up, but the ring is worn all funny, and it still runs like a bag ofr arseholes

I suspect the low comp is why it had a insanely hot plug in it

long story short, needs ring, and piston has no oversize marks on it

RIGHT, so I'm broke and the riffer is almost out of gas, my computer died and i cant sleep; time to go to the shed!

I've mostly stripped the bike and she looks good, but god knows how i'm going to get the crankcase clean without an air gun... the full circle crank occupies all the room in there.... maybe just hope for the best?

Oh, and i've got her bored out .25mm for the new piston, have some racing reed valves, and am looking at the head very closely as it hasn't been machined off quite right - time for moar compression maybe? maybe not considering it's aircooled and failed by detonation, but I hear there's a guy around these ways who bores 'em out 4mm and machines the intake port to fit a double set of reeds!


ALSO, what do we know of the "racing fuel" at BP Kumeu - they claim it's 105 octane leaded fuel

right... well washing her out with kero wasn't too successful; i'm concerned that all i've done is washed aluminium into my main bearings.

a quick blat on a dirtbike later, the motor is now on my workbench.... bloody thing is a featherweight! (and the chassis weighs only marginally more)

SO, before i attempt to split the cases apart and begin what may be a nightmare rebuild, does anyone have any info pertaining to there being a seal between the crank case and the main ball bearings? I can't find a parts diagram so any surgery from here onwards will be exploratory.... not the kind of adventure i want to be going on in such fine weather :(

furthermore, i suspect my tools are all going to be too big...

what are the odds both rings are infact identical? they both are the wedged type so there is a taper on the top face as the ring sits in the groove (IIRC), but i can't detect any taper on the running surface to differentiate top from bottom ring :(

Not a damn clue, only 2-stroke I've ever had to bits was about 15 years ago and I don't recall that we ever even took the rings off the piston (don't think we replaced anything). Will ask my old man tonight if you're still stuck, failing that throw a post up in the engine maintenance forum.

Right, so after wemoto kindly sent out another bearing, uni kicked in and had me tied up for few weeks.....

I return to the shed to find someone's been in there and felt it neccesary to go fiddling with everything - and lost the piston circlip :angry2:

some very angry rants later and an extensive hunt through the shed and the little bag with the clip is found under the dirtbikes in the opposite corner of the shed.

hopefully she'll be running again by midnight :D

the the old man goes on about how it's all my fault should have packed it all away - wtf? Gotta love that. A friend of mine had his drum kit wrecked by some drunk friends of his flatmates while he was out one night.

You can pack stuff away or keep it out of sight, but ultimately the responsibility lies on the person doing the stuffing around with it. If it isn't yours, ask before touching, especially if it looks valuable.

well cbf'd cleaning the pipe so in goes some fuel and on goes the choke..

suffice to say the shed was quickly full of delicious blue smoke and noise. lots of it.

Well we're at it again - this time we have a van and a plan, hopefully bringing The Beast up to Auckland at long last:woohoo:

As of a few hours ago studylink promised me monies so we'll be driving down to wellington, sleeping somewhere (possibly in the van), and retrieving The Beast from the ferry sometime in the morning before returning back to auckland. Hilarity will no doubt ensue:D

Right. Situation update thus far.

Leave home at 4pm, finally leave Auckland at 7pm due to people being unable to refrain from crashing on a straight motorway. Sigh.

Put three months rego on the car on the internet as we leave - great, the car is now rego'd until next Thursday!

Motorbyclist seems to have created an entire new plan and itinerary in the fevered imagination of his mind. Needless to say, we ignore it.

We get to the BP outside Taupo on bare fumes. Decide to pump up the tyres on the car to keep fuel efficiency at an optimum (rather than doing this, y'know, back in Auckland ><). Unfortunately we give the job to Magua, who proceeds to unscrew the AIR VALVE out of the tyre, at which point the tyre deflates faster than MadBikeBoy in the face of a sound argument.

Sigh.

Remove the wheel and pull out the spare wheel to find it's a space-saver. Fuck's sake, a 80km/h top speed to get to Wellington? Sod that. We rummage through the car and manage to find a adjustable spanner - woot! Fix (we think) the wheel and put it back on. It's survived to Wellington at undisclosed speeds so shouldn't kill us too badly.

Unfortunately by this point, Rach has given up on us and gone to sleep. Sound decision. ;)

Eventually get to Wellington. And what the fuck, people? This isn't a city, it's a navigational hazard. As in, it is impossible to navigate legally. However this fits in with my driving style perfectly, so we cruise around with Motorbyclist trying to sleep in the boot, and park up.

Ferry should be leaving in a couple of hours - until then, beer and killing people on the internet sounds like the plan!

Pity I didn't knew until mid-week that we weren't going to be able to use the van - if I'd had a couple more weeks notice that it would be my car being used I'd've budgeted for some new tyres, heh.

*waits for Motorbyclist to come online and bitch that even though everyone including him knew the plan before the trip, he still turned up at the rendezvous with a completely different plan in his fevered mind* ;)
