trip posts start around post 98
PirateJafa and myself are planning to embark on an "ambitious" ride up the country, spreading 2100 kilometres over 5 days, currently starting on the 1st of july.
What we need is somewhere to stay in Wellington, Napier, and somwhere near the east cape.
We might also need emergency mechanics, and forewarnings if fuel may be an issue.
The plan:
Day one (http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Christchurch,+Canterbury&daddr=-41.444785,173.781738+to:Main+Road+Hope+to:picton&geocode=%3B%3BFcgaif0dBE9SCg%3B&hl=en&mra=dpe&mrcr=0&mrsp=1&sz=10&via=1,2&sll=-41.47566,173.645782&sspn=0.755227,1.400757&ie=UTF8&ll=-42.30169,173.485107&spn=3.737667,5.603027&z=8), Wednesday, fly down to christchurch, pick up Jafa's 1970s Suzuki A80 and pillion to the nearest store to buy two decent sized fuel constainers, and then head up the east coast to nelson where I will pick up my 1986 Honda H100s. Then ride to picton, catch a ferry and hopefully disembark sober enough to ride to the nearest bottle shop and then to a kind KBer's house with the eventual aim of sleep.
Day two (http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=wellington&daddr=Manawa+Rd+to:Route+52+to:Porangahau+Rd+to:-39.57685,176.849327+to:napier&geocode=%3BFYj5kP0dFHx-Cg%3BFbollv0dRIWBCg%3BFXzgm_0d7oCFCg%3B%3B&hl=en&mra=dpe&mrcr=0&mrsp=4&sz=12&via=1,2,3,4&sll=-39.585582,176.882286&sspn=0.194209,0.350189&ie=UTF8&ll=-40.513799,176.116333&spn=3.841887,5.603027&z=8), keeping to the eastern roads, we make our way up to napier for more beer and maybe some sleep. Remember the A80 is topped out at 80kph so this may take some time....
Day three (http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=napier&daddr=Te+Araroa+Rd&geocode=%3BFQS4wf0dY5ihCg&hl=en&mra=ls&sll=-37.728366,178.344498&sspn=0.199311,0.350189&ie=UTF8&ll=-39.049052,177.654419&spn=3.924484,5.603027&z=8), continue our journey up to the east cape. visiting this at dusk seems kinda silly so maybe if we could sleep just south of it....
Day four (http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Pohutu+Rd&daddr=-37.695639,178.5462+to:waihi&geocode=Fci5wf0d3JqhCg%3B%3B&hl=en&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=1&sz=13&via=1&sll=-37.691428,178.506718&sspn=0.099705,0.175095&ie=UTF8&ll=-38.091337,176.726074&spn=3.7437,7.69043&z=8), we head west along the coast to jafa's Aunt's place in Waihi.
Day five (http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=waihi&daddr=-37.047505,175.821075+to:Te+Rerenga+Kuaotunu+Rd+to: Maraetai+Coast+Rd+to:Pakuranga+Hwy+to:Mays+Rd+to:O live+Gr&geocode=%3B%3BFar1zv0dQgh4Cg%3BFRMizf0dtC5vCg%3BFc LIzP0dNxNsCg%3BFXGqzP0dCEJrCg%3BFZjyzP0dpvhqCg&hl=en&mra=dpe&mrcr=0&mrsp=1&sz=10&via=1,2,3,4,5&sll=-37.008036,175.619202&sspn=0.804933,1.400757&ie=UTF8&ll=-37.688167,175.775757&spn=3.764241,5.603027&z=8), Sunday, we stick to the coast and do a coro loop, probably with the SMC crew, and cruise via kaiauia up to auckland to summit one stump hill for victory photos!
We will be carrying cameras, fuel, oil, spark plugs and basic tools - maybe even some clean clothes, but tents and sleeping bags are kind of out of the question.... we really need to be as light as possible and are expecting shocking weather....
So, any volunteers to bed us for a night or offer mechanical assistance are much appreciated! Just PM with some details and we'll put you on our map:niceone:
Cheers!
.
all the best Andrew :niceone:

This is going to be epic. Would like to see lots of photos!
Mind if I tag along? I dunno. Upto Cheviot/ Kaikoura? I can be the camera man. My bike's a similar 1987 Yamaha 125cc. Could suit nicely :niceone:

is it a two stroke?
we must bring as much noise and pollution to the clean south island air as possible!

well then I don't see why not - in fact pillioning on that for the first third of the journey would allow us to move a bit faster; with pillion the A80 is unlikely to break 60kph
could also carry a tow rope ;)

Good on ya, sounds like fun....but at the risk of being the fun police it does look a bit ambitous, you may want to allow a little more time for covering that sort of ground on those sorts of bikes.
At least be prepared with a plan B, something like puncture repair gear, spark plugs & tools, a sleeping bag and emergency thermal blanket (it can be cold out).
Enjoy!

Shouldn't be too bad - our big nemesis is, of course, hills.
We'll have all of those except the sleeping bags. We really have to keep the amount we're carrying down to a bare minimum, which is why we can't take a tent.
Not even taking spare clothes, other than some extra pairs of socks! (Considering some changes of clothes ahead along the way ;))
You're not getting to my neck of the woods but if ya were there'd be a space for you.
Andy.
Have you got a place to stay in Picton while you wait for the ferry? My dear old mum could probably put you up.
Have you considered taking the hanmer springs / Rainbow road route to nelson??

We looked at that (the placenames looked awesome) but considering we're quite likely going to be two-up on a 72cc bike, we decided to stick with the flatter option!

What we need is somewhere to stay in Wellington, Napier, and somwhere near the east cape.
If you're going to do this properly, what you really need first, is a decent title.
If you were good KBers, you would've started a poll, to run a selection of names past the VariousFeckinEejits, see what's most popular, then pick something suggested along the way, like "Lock up your Daughters, Sheep, and Other Small Animules: Two Crazydudes Tour Noo Zilund in an Epic Adventure of Even Epicker Proportions!"
Then add to that a subtext, describing choosing one of the more mental times of the year to tour, that you're using some underpowered and unreliable motovelocipedes to (hopefully) get you there, and you're doing the whole thing on a shoestring budget (assuming you can find some non-velcro-fastened footwear that has shoestrings that you can then pawn for some gas money).

that's the plan - we've set ambitious but not quite impossible goals.
Plan B is currently unplanned, which makes it the most appealing:msn-wink:
to keep the weight and bulk down we might courier/post some clean clothes parcels to some of the stops (probably napier and waihi). This allows us to carry more tools.
A puncture repair kit would actually be a very good idea
And holy shit Sam that 50 looks AWESOME! If I hadn't already commited to my honda i'd be getting that!

I see that you already have a HB offer. But I be happy to be the "Plan B in Hawke's Bay". No plans of going anywhere and heaps of space. Add to that tools and a garage of bits (that my g/f has no understanding for and often misguidedly refers to as junk that should be put on a trailer and taken to the dump!) that can get most bikes functional again after a holocaust.
Impressive (Did I already say that?)

Good option not to take this one, it will involve getting a key for locked gates and one of the high passes is closed with snow. Yes, it's nearly 100km shorter to Nelson but is gravel for 100km as well.
Great idea for a roadie, shit I would have waited till spring though, it's bloody cold in the south at the mo', road ice warnings everywhere around top of the south. Have fun boys!:2thumbsup

Fuel is available at Tologa, and Tokomaru bays, and in Ruatoria (the pump is up the side of the Supermarket, I think it is a 4 square), also available at Te Araroa, Te Kaha, and (I think) Hicks Bay. Shouldn't be too much drama if you tank up where you can.

1st July 2009, 20:20
Got to airport early and at the sme time, received instructions on what to do and went to our departure gate. Got the rubber cement taken from the puncture repair kit, and the whole tool kit was disallowed.
Now, heres where jetstar give the provision to upgrade from a $60 carry on only fare to an $80 checked baggage fare. Unfortunately, "there isn't enough time to do that before check in closes" - 20 minutes away by now, 50 before the plane is due to leave - and i get stung for the whole $80 rather than buying new tools
arrive early, wait for baggage, then spend $20 between us getting to suzuki. jafa mucks around with 14 days rego and ownership at the post shop, and we then go through 4 different christchurch shops to find oil and suitable gas can before finding our way out of there via the motorway, at a hilarious 60kph.
filled everything up with gas and fixed the loose wingmirror at kaipoi and left headed north at noon....

So after a while we swap seats and I promptly discover that not only does the bike go much betterer between 70 & 80 kph than it does at 60, but that 3rd gear ends at 60 while 4th really starts at 70....... suffice to say once speed dropped below 70 it plummets to 50.
then the gearbox started playing up, neutral gears and all.....
Managed to get her up to 85 at one point on a descent, before finding the rear brake pedal (first time i'd had to use it as the front brakes dont work) pushes back as the rear suspension moves.....
Then we hit some awesome twisties and all was well:ride:

so we get to kaikoura for fish and chips at 4pm. this is currently to travel time schedule, but we're 3 hours behind.
We leave with a fresh load of fuel, but skies are darkening and our low beam doesn't work... nor does the high beam. The tail lights are strongly lit, but all the front does is a dull red glow. As we head north into the rain the light fades and it becomes increasingly apparent we won't make the evening ferry, or even blenheim. Day fades to night and we're guided by the moon, the faintest reflection of road markers directly infront of our light, which is pointed off to the left somewhere, and we're still barey holding 80kph.
Suffice to say that not one car that passed us thought to tag along and lend us light. One truckie flashed us as if we hadn't noticed out light was fucked - meanwhile i was completely blinded by the contrast.
Then came the sign (illuminated for only half a second) showing a dip ahead. then "! FORD" and into that we went. the next one was worse due to the blinding trucks in it at the same time, and the one after that was just a pain.
All in all things were increasingly dangerous as corners were mostly guesswork and any oncoming traffic was blinding.
We came across a random bar/store in kekerengu, where I bailed into the carpark to assess our options - travel into what looked like shaded roads while truck traffic was evidently increasing, or call the AA.
We elected to ask some locals if they could tail us to blenheim but to no avail, as they wouldonly go as far as 15km north, 5 km short Ward, with bar and beds. One of them waits while we call the AA. Jafa calls and after 21 minutes on hold gave up - it appeared that while Jafa has current AAplus, he is somehow not a member so can't get a towie. Fuck.
We get back on the bike and start it. This time when we turn the lights on the motor cuts out. Great.
A local pulls up and directs us towards a local B&B a few hundred meters away - our headlights never lit up the signage - and after we found it, riding by only a half moon's light hiding behind clouds as they wouldn't offer an escort, it was closed. Then right as we gave up and walked back to the bike for certain death the door lit up and we were let in!
Then we're told the standard rate for the pair of us was $140.... Some deliberation later including another call to the AA and we decide to go for it, but they don't accept eftpos!
So we're currently $130 poorer and sitting with hot chocolates under a heat pump thingy.
breakfast will be served at 8am:laugh:

So, obviously we're bang half way between kaihoura and blenheim after 6 hours riding, and are quite far behind schedule.
As such, the new plan is to spend tomorrow getting to nelson, where we will collect my Honda at 6pm. If we arrive early we'll try to fix the headlights and/or go for a blat, possibly a hillclimb.... When we get the honda, we will assess the headlights situation: if we can't safely ride at night on open road we will have to stay in nelson tomorrow night (paul we would be most appreciative :blip:), then probably shack up with junkmanjoe the night after, and then conquiztador the night after that.... from napier onwards is subject to road status what with the recent flooding in the area, but the backpackers up to the cape are all deemed affordable so wherever the sun sets we stop....

So after a mammoth breakfast of 6 weetbix, banana, two cheese crissionts and two coffees, were were off! Well, almost; the suzuki had sprung a leak. Turns out the carby is leaking fuel into it's compartment and being on the sidestand allowed it to pool in there... we also noticed some poorly placed drain holes and screwdriver access holes that totally circumvented having an air filter. We tried to get out kind hosts to take a pic of us riding, even with their sign behind us, but they failed to operate the camera successfully....
We decided it was good enough and hit some absolutely stunning roads along the coast before stopping to take some pics of the snow within sight of the sea and to swap seats. We went through a pass that was pure awesome, stopping only due to my legs cramping and not having anough ground clearance to tretch properly. About 200m after setting off again we ran out of gas, filled up, mucked around, and generally enjoyed the stunning place we were in. The roads continued their scenic tour through marlbourough vineyards and took us to blenheim where we gassed up and got the tyres inpected. apparently they will infact run forever but we had lost half our pressure.
Continuing the journey to nelson, we passed our second vehicle of the trip (a cyclist) as we made our way up a huge valley to marlborough sounds for lunch at havelock, where the cyclist promptly arrived a few minutes later. We had some pies, spied some locals checking out 'The Beast' and checked a map at "soundz interesting" - possibly the most painful pun we will ever encounter, they also offered mussel farm cruises and were "licenced croc dealers".
We swapped seats again, had a photo shoot at sea level and took off down the road.
bout 3km later we pulled over to assess the serious misfire that had developed. the plug had a large gap, was lighter than it started, and had white splotches on it. we swapped plugs, pu tools away, got ready to go, then unloaded tools again (5 minute operation) and removed the nib on the plug so the HT lead would fit, then packed again and set off.
The road was nice, but the gremlins soon returned.....

1 - Safe? Not if we have anything to do with it!
2 - We made it to the Marlborough Sounds - What a mint place this island is!
3 - Let's check the spark plug... and the tool kit is, of course, in the BOTTOM of the bungee'd down bag...
4 - Refueling on the side of the road again - duct tape is my favourite invention in the fooking world!
5 - We ride up to the top of the Cathedral steps in Nelson - and then straight down them again (breaking the packrack - oops!)
6 - Meeting the locals
motorbyclist
2nd July 2009, 22:54
The Beast was sick. If we exceeded 75kph it misfired badly, and as we ascended the mountains the gearbox was and endless source of trouble; we'd get all the way up to 50kph, go to shift up and hit neutral, then not find another gear until dropping down to 30kph. sometimes single downshift would drop two gears, overrevving The Beast and slowing us down further.
All that aside, the roadworkers absolutely loved us and our antics - by this stage we'd figured out how to wheelie:woohoo:. We even had the inpector ute toot and wave, and saw one driver waiting in a queue visibly mouth "what the fuuuuuuck" as we climbed the hill past him at 40kph.
People gave toots, waved, and didn't try to knock us off. Heading back to auckland will be a rough change....
But, then the 'flu got even worse as the bike started to run down, but would come right after a short period of idle, as if the bowls were not filling fast enough. Topping up the tank seems to recify the problem by providing some more head pressure, and with only 30km to go and the promise of beds, and a honda, ahead of us we gritted our teeth and continued the journey.
We were rewarded with some AWESOME twisties reasonably clear of grit by this late hour, and arrived in Nelson without further trouble...
motorbyclist
2nd July 2009, 23:13
So upon arriving in Nelson, we head for the town centre and try our best to avoid pedestrians whilst still maintaining momentum, like any auckland driver should, and went past what looked like a big grey prison straight towards the stairs at the end. These stairs were evidently a challenge, so we set about climbing them to find the "christ church cathedral" atop the hill.
Some photos an txts later, and we're on the phone to Keystone19 (Jill) about where to go from there, and are intructed to find the nMIT and S block. So we decide to ride back down - daunting at first but easy enough once you've got it unstuck from the first stair where it bottoms out - just don't hit the brakes.
After about two flights the pack rack decided to break off.
We remove the packs, fit them to my person, and i proceed to hang of the end of the seat, holding onto jafa and the convienient handle we've mounted to the tank (the gas can). A few scary speed bumps later we're riding around the nMIT buildings looking for S block, before Jill catches us consulting the map. There is no S block, apparently she said F block. We park up, get directions, call paul and head on over.
Now we're meant to turn right out of nMIT, then left at the lights, left at the mcdonalds, straight through a roundabout and left at the next one.
We find it is now dark outside, traffic is heavy, and we have no headlight. We turn left out of nMIT, right at the next intersection, right again at the dead end, left onto the road we're meant to be on, left well before mcdonalds, U turn, left back onto the road, left at mcdonalds, pass a decent number of cars by riding in the median strip (lol, suckers), merge like aucklanders just to spite the zip everyone else was trying to make, then get passed by everyone in the subsequent 70kph zone.... turn left at the first roundabout, travel a few km before giving up, u turn, left at roundabout, left again and overshoot paul's driveway, not having a headlight to read the letter box numbers.
Paul finds us and we get in to have a look at his impressive and varied collection of bikes, and check out my newest addition to my honda collection: the 1986 "racing brown" Honda H100se. We explain the Suzuki woes and he offers to help. We go for a blat on the honda to mitre10 and then get some takeaways before returning to work on The Beast.
Now, it may be because after two days 2up on a failing 72cc motorbike my perspective is slightly skewed, but "Brown Fury" is one of the meanest motherfuckers on the road! We ripped around nelson making all sorts of noise and quickly learning the quirks of "rev to indicate" electrics. and ZOMG we have a headlight! and a working gearbox! Brown Fury is my new favourite toy:D:D:D

First on the list is the fuel leak, so into the carby we go! It's a pain to do, and while isn't exactly shiny (brown scunge abound) it's given the all clear. We will just have to turn the fuel tap off overnight....
Next is the spark plug. The new plug we installed in white. we may have nearly siezed the motor, which was potentially why it was misfiring. Dr Paul consults his books and find the plug we should be running is an 8, while we have been running on a 4 for the last two days. We pop it back in seeing as it got us this far and make plans to buy an 8 and a 7 in the morning. We look at the white splotches on the old plug and apparently that is due to pre-ignition. lol.
Finally, we look at the fuel tap/filter. the tap is full of shit, the inside of the tank is rusty (and flaking) and the tap has a split reserve filter and an absent "on" filter. there was no filter at the carby, so it's a miracle we got this far without a blocked jet.
The lights are for another day, as it is likely due to corrosion and wiring looms take time.
The amusing part here is The Beast cost as much as Brown Fury, and here are all these problems with The Beast whilst Brown Fury is absolutley sweet and even has new engine covers! It even came with free beers which we forgot to grab before leaving:pinch:
So off up the hill we go to see Jill. We only make one wrong turn (and Brown Fury does a wheelstand!). On the steep incline up to Jill's The Beast actually comes to a standstill (photos tomorrow, but lets say i wouldnt want to be walking up there), while Brown Fury rips on past making all the right noises from it's RACE PIPE:bleh:
It turns out that if The Beast isn't asked to drive any lighting it actually goes faster and continues up the hill.
We (I) arrive at Jill's and discover Brown Fury has a horn even more pathetic than that of my NC35 with a shot battery, but jill hears (or smells) my presence and opens the garage door as jafa arrives.
Showers and internet later and it's 11:30 pm. We're so fucked for the morning.... And tomorrow will be interesting trying to make the 10:15 ferry when we take doube the time uggested by google, but with Joe as an escort and the headlight on Brown Fury, The Beast might get to do some night riding to masterton where we can address the lighting issues and get both our front brakes working again.....
:scooter:
PS: we have some AWESOME footage from my helmet cam in the copilot's hands, hopefully compress and upload tomorrow nigh :D

lol. you should have gone with them. Theyr'e aiming for the 10ish ferry knowing full well that they will likely miss it and make the 1ish one. By the time they hit Wellington they should be well rested.
If they hit the 1pm ferry they'll be joining peak traffic out of Wellington. Which could be a good thing considering their top speed. And they'll be bordering on night riding the Rimutaka's.
I'm looking forward to tonights post. And I'm hoping they'll make the 10am. The top speed will be up because they're one up and the Suzuki will be able to slipstream the Honda.

PirateJafa had hatched a plan to take Wellington's Tag-o-rama tag. We had the tag location sorted. All he had to do was make it to the ferry, over to Wellington, up to Johnsonville and 6.5km's to the end of Rifle Range Road.
Had everything gone to plan he'd have done it. But as you'll see from tonight's posts. They had bike problems, missed a couple of ferry's and Cloggy nailed the tag before the steal could be completed.
To have lost that tag to two guys riding an 80cc bike from Christchurch to Nelson and 100cc from there would have been epic.
Good try Pirate. Clearly Mr Suzuki never envisaged two people touring on one of his 80cc bikes from long ago.
At 6.48 pm the goal on the minor side trip was lost. At least they'll get to Masterton a good half an hour earlier.

I didn't talk to the guys for very long, they were keen to get on their way to Masterton.
Would have loved to join them on their ride and carried on to the top of the Rimutaka Hill but needed to head home so left them to it from the Petone off-ramp onwards.
Photos are a bit fuzzy. The old camera doesn't get enough time to focus with the flash going in the dark.

We snuggled up for the night, with jafa locking himself into the room with the heater and me using two sleeping bags to keep warm. we awoke to stunning views, but wishing we'd had more sleep we pretty quickly got ready to go - we had to get to repco for a gas can and oil, and get to picton in time for the 10:30 ferry.
We geared up and made some noise, but The Beast died and wouldnt start again. Jafa got half way down the hill before realising he didn't turn the fuel back on:slap:
Off we went down the hill, gt to the bottom, jafa turned left where we were meant to go right, so i waved him down and pointed out that I had left my pack back in the garage. We climb back up the hill to find Jill waiting patiently on the footpath for us, and begin the day again. It is about 8:30 by now....
After some communting we manage to find repco and buy oil, tank, and Beast plugs. All goes well until I find I didn't bring a 14mm socket with which to remove the seat to easily fill the oil. I go in, buy one, go back in to get the tag out of it, then find I cocked up and need a 12mm so go in and get it swapped (not a big deal now as all my 12mm ones are rooted anyway). Brown Fury gets some racing stripes and We leave repco at 9:30.... this is not going well for the 10:30 ferry....

We hit the streets and head for the coast, and end up asking some old people with a caravan how to get to the motorway - they were old bikers and very keen on our story so far, but we had a ferry to catch so off we went. At this point, Brown Fury is absolutely awesome, and The Beast has a high idle, so we decide to see how it goes. A few km later we pull over, as we forgot to fill up on gas, and The Beast is topping out at 65. We headback and I find that if I totally rev out Brown Fury in fourth, fith will sit nicely at 110kph in the power, also, The Beast is making more smoke than usual. At the shell station in the city we gas up, then decide to check why the The Beast is feeling ill - high idle may well mean lean mix, especially after removing the carb last night perhaps it isn't seated properly? We get out the tools to have a look rather than sieze the motor.
Some time later we have a loose carby (and a big puddle of petrol) in the forecourt and examine the way it bolts on - without going into detail, if the carby isn't entirely slipped on, it will leak air at the join due to the design of the thing. there are a lot of vice/hammer marks on the carby, so we pull out the hammer and screwdriver (lever/chisel) and gently tap it back into place. We give Dr Paul a call to see if he can recover The Beast if we have to ditch it.
Reassemble, pump tyres and go. 1km later we pull over - The Beast is sick. We swap bikes to ride back to Paul's palce and I get a true appreciation of how bad this is; she wont rev out, spluttering and cutting right as the power hits. The more I ride the worse it gets until i'm doing 40kph along the expressway. Every now and then The Beast gives a push to 50kph, but this is just the death throws. This motor had seized long before we got to the station, the damage has been done and I'm only making it worse.
Realising that IF it makes it to Paul's, it'll be totally fucked and/or DOA, we leave it at the local suzuki dealer for Paul to collect. Cheers mate - we'll be back for her soon :)

So, it is now 10:30am and the next ferry is at 1:30pm, we gun it out of nelson and into the hills, travelling as fast as is possible 2up on a 100cc monster up a step windy hill with ice and grit. On the descent we amuse the road workers again and get up to whopping 115kph before the speedo has a spaz. We stop again in Havelock for lunch which included the most delicious mussel pie I've ever had:drool: and then swap seats for Charlotte Drive to picton.
After some worrying corners, several wheelies, breathtaking panoramas and dodgy surfaces, we finally arrive in Picton. The time is 2:35. Fuck. 3pm we rock up to the interislander check in and sort out our tickets - the online booking for The Beast is non-refundable, and we can't send The Beast across on it's own on a later date, so we postpone that ticket a month and buy a reasonably priced fare for Jafa.
Check in for the ferry is at 5pm, so we spend the next two hours chatting with passing bikers/cyclists, getting the front brakes working, checking the plug, topping up oil and moving fuel from the red container to the main tank - we used nearly 5L to get from nelson to picton.
At 5pm we're off with a rip and a snort and pop a mean mono off down the carpark after using the choke to generate a small blue cloud. While we wait for check in we have some more wheelie practice, and then wait in the queue to board the ferry. Interislander, tell your crew to tell us WTF we are meant to be doing - the guy just took out ticket and walked off, as some people drove forward and others sat there wondering wtf is going on.

Now on the ferry, writing up this post in advance on notepad, and reviewing the 4.3GB of footage we've gotten with the camera (teaser to come later tonight). Nearly lost my speights to the boat rocking and sending it sliding off my armrest, nice acoustic band playing, jafa is playing CIV2, and we're considering paying the exorbitant $3.50 for some chips.
When we arrive in wellington at 9:30 (ish) we're to head for the Rimutakas to meet up with Joe on his KTM. Jafa will hop onto the pillion seat and we'll head up to his place in masterton to arrive around 11pm with any luck.
Losing The Beast has been a loss, and it did have us down for a while, but to be fair we've found riding 2up is actually more enjoyable. We've also realised that Brown Fury riding along behind at The Beast's pace - while easy for the honda motor - was going to be excruciating at times. Also, it took us five hours to get to picton on Brown Fury. The Beast would have taken much longer, and may have had us riding by moonlight again, so, when it comes down to it, by leaving The Beast behind we're going to be able to make better times that could actually meet our ambitions and get home before we go broke :)
So we'll have to have another shot at this to retrieve The Beast. Maybe we'll fly down with a new top end and ride her back, even if only to load it into a van at the wellington end. Maybe we'll come back down on Brown Fury to rereive our fallen comrade, perhaps someone will buy it up at a price that isn't too big a loss: we'll just finish the trip and worry about that then, for we still have 1600Km ahead of us and I think that Brown Fury might be running a touch lean, and it would appear we don't have an even flame, but that can be looked at later tonight or in the morning.

So after filling the ferry hold with blue smoke and wheelieing off the ramp, we followed out sprotsbike rider friend down the motorway, where I came to realise that either all wellingtonions speed, or our speedo is out.
We cracked on up the rimutakas 2up on Brown Fury until we met Joe on his DR, which we thought was going to be a KTM for some reason, and unloaded jafa onto joe and took off.
The rimutakas, at night, with a headlight that dies when the brakes are applied, is AWESOME! Brown Fury was lapping it up with ease! I was so stoked I completely lost my voice to whatever has been harrassing my throat since yesterday. We cruised one through the straight roads, impressed the cops at a checkpoint, and finally got to Joe's safe and sound, under what has to be the biggest sky we've seen (having been in valleys all week).
So, after that awesome blat through the rimutakas (traffic free), I've decided the ONLY viable option is to fly/ride back down to nelson with a new top end for The Beast and ride it back through the rimutakas, although if it threatens to die again we'd better have a van waiting for us on the other side... our ferry ticket is good until august.

Can't wait for the eventual video(s)! Oh and there's a perfect song by Dethklok you must put in it called "The Lost Vikings"
"Riding, and riding, we search across the land
The snow, and wind, has frozen hearts of man
But we ride
We ride
Many days ago we left our homes
With swords to ride into the night
Fighting side by side to destroy our foes
And leave them without life
We stop, consider the land that we travelled
Our map's at home, direction unravelled
But we ride
We ride...
...We come upon a witch who takes us in
To let us share her mighty fire
She asks of us our story and we lie and say
We ride around for hire
She asks us if we'd like to have her map
And points us in some direction
But we are far too proud and strong so we keep silent
And ignore her suggestion
Lost but still we ride
Search until we die
All the fault of pride
The gods weep in the night..."

Southern Cross on an RG50 !!! That is a truly marathon effort.
Sadly these boys would have bombed the time constraints of the Southern Cross, though extra merit must be given to them for doing it 2 up!
I understand that he rode from Cape Reinga to Wellington, only stopping for gas and a pie, slept on the ferry and then repeated the exercise until he reached Invercargill. He was first out to the signpost at Bluff in the morning - what a guy. (The 2003 event I think)
You've got to hand it to these lads though, a great adventure:rockon:

If anyone hear something from the two on their trusty stead, please post it here as I am supposed to be the lucky one enjoying their company tonight. But I will be at the movies with my 3 boys from 1.30pm until approx 4pm.

Bring it on!:woohoo::wari::woohoo:
You'll need to be quick, our tags don't usually last more than a couple of hours.
Third time lucky? I don't fancy your chances.
Couple of Hours? Couple of Hours? There are at least 3 taggers sleep in their gear with the engines ticking over just waiting for the next one. If you don't leave the house within 5 mins of the post, it's gone. It's normally a straight drag race to see who can get to it first and then back before someone else posts it. It can change locations 6-7 times on a week-end.
Great reading guy's. An absolute epic adventure that will go down as an all time great.

I think you should send this thread to Peter Jackson. I'm sure there's a movie in there somewhere!

Plan? What?
1 - Queen Charlotte Sound, to the tune of blue smoke and ringading.
2 - We made it to Picton, and *just* missed the FOURTH ferry we'd booked on. So we changed our booking and caught the fifth ferry we'd booked.
3 - The first traffic jam we've encountered in the South Island!

So we finally had a sleep in as Hastings/Napier was only five hours away - provided we left at noon and stuck to route 52 without incident we'd be sweet.
We left the caltex in masterton at 1:30.
We got onto SH2 and promptly turned around, having completely forgotten the directions given to us, and headed back to the last gas station we had seen. There, a local gave us instructions to head fr castle point and the turn off for bideford, but not to go through bideford.
When It came to turning off for bideford, we for some reason headed for castlepoint. From there on I think we confused castlepoint for castlehill (which we were not meant to be headed for anyway), and proceeded to absolutely thrash the clutch on Brown Fury to get through the beautiful scenery as fast as possible. We stopped at a confusing intersection and spent some time weighing the benefits of consulting a map against the hassle of pulling out on of the laptops. laziness won the day. We next stopped to admire a large mountain/rock at tinui before heading for castlepoint, and herded some stubborn sheep that clearly weren't as scared of the ring-a-ding-ding as the ones back home are as scared of my motox bike..... By this time we had reached the east coast and could see the surf. We had made a Big mistake, and it was now 2:30.
We headed back to the castlepoint hotel (awesome pub, btw) to consult the map, where we amused the patrons by learning the hard way about low-slung race pipes, pillions and speed bumps. Suffice to say we actually came to a stop on the expansion chamber, leaving a considerable dent.
The maps showed that we were meant to turn LEFT at tinui, instead of admiring the large rock, and that were were going to have to consider abandoning route 52 to sh2 near dannevirke. We talked to Dr Paul about the lean plug and he suggested either running a colder plug or losing a clip on the needle. To save the inevitable disaster that opening the carb would be, and for lack of a place to buy plugs, we decided to cease thrashing Brown Fury and let it sit at half throttle, despite the lower pace.
Either way we were now doing the gravel road through castlehill, do donned our helmets and headed for tinui for lunch. At 3pm we headed off along what is apparently a dangerous road, or so the large warning signs said...
When we finally reached the gravel we had to stop - it was loose, round stones deep on a hard base: a nightmare for a small overloaded bike with road tyres and near zero weight on the front wheel. We moved 3L of gas from the rear to the front and had a chat with local farmers passing through on their quad bikes. Why don't aucklanders drive around on quads? these guys were great! Anyway, seeing we had lost out oil bottle, we set off.
"when in doubt, power out" - the culmination of a decade offroad riding experience - was basically what got us through the next hour of front sliding, mild tankslappers, and general lack of control. At least with all the weight on the rear it never really slid out... popped a few more wheelies though....
The road eventually gave up on gravel, and turned to smooth dirt. Perfect. We checked the plug and it was nice and brown, so clearly not holding her with wide open throttle was the way to go. We took off again and around the next corner the road turned to mud. Shit. It then went back to smooth with the occasional random stretch of seal until we finally got back on the road. After more of my favourite sort of rural sealed road on the perfect bike we finally got onto route 52. At dusk....
The next hour out so of fading sunlight was spend on what is quite possibly one of the best roads in the country for riding - consistent surface, very low traffic volume, awesome sights, and only two rouge sheep! (methinks the were-sheep were out to get us SMC riders again). Eventually, we were again riding by moonlight with a less-than-sufficient headlight that would dim whenever we hit the brakes, and no reflectors or painted lines to guide us. The road was still good, but if there was a bad patch we weren't going to see it until too late, and any manuvuers were being made essentially blind.
Some hours later we skidded to a halt - I had just caught a glance of a sign bearing the word "Backpackers". We then overshot the driveway a few times and then found the driveway to be a bit dangerous, but got there safe and sound.
Now, the first thing we said was that we didn't have cash. It didn't matter :D
The old couple running the place were generous enough to have us stay (and even feed us!) in exchange or only our gratitude and our story. we got on the phone and looked at the map to find we were barely even half way to hastings, and decided to call it a night and stay there.
So we've got the whole mini-complex to ourselves, with warm fire and a range of DVDs to let us relax, Roast pork(!) and breakfast sorted too, while it begins to rain outside. With this fire our boots can finally dry out! they've been wet since arriving in christchurch :D
Honestly, this place is only $25per person for made up bed and everything, so we would've paid it if we could - It's right in the middle of route 52, so considering how nice this road is, I can see a return trip in the future :) - It's called the Glenross Lodge.
Considering we're only in Rakaunui, we aim to get to Conquiztators in the afternoon. Yet another planned day taking twice as long as it should.... Not to worry; it hasn't cost us much and if we can keep riding through to tuesday, studylink might come through and support us to the end of the week:D
