I'd like to get an indication of who's planning on entering which speed group.

17th March 2005, 19:22
I was planning on starting in the touring group and possibly revising it on the day depending on how my speed suits that group. Is that OK?
Bikes pretty new so I'm not too keen trashing it just yet.

I've voted Touring, but I might be better starting in slow, and moving up as necessary... Either way, I'm happy to leave the decision up to you.

Start in touring and move up But what I have seen on the track I don't think the race bikes need an older Gixxer holding them up. Some of you races are going to try and get 44's so I think the middle rang of riders is going to be big.

I'm with Gix n Grump on this.. I think I'd be in between.. Not done the track before, so obvisouly wanna chill a little, but then I don't want to be chilled all day, but I don't want to be roadkill either..
May be have a 'racers' section? or between us, make sure the racers know who's who, and that we aren't going to spoilt their fun, when we're not quite at their pace. Not going to hold them up, but there's only so far and so fast I'll push

I've stuck touring for the moment, but will probably move up to fast later in the day if I reckon I'll get bored.. Never one to hang around, but new track, and not had this on the track yet, altho saying that, I'll be at Puke on it next week..

I'll vote for touring for now. Hard to say without knowing how fast the "fast" group will be going. Would like to have a go with some faster guys though.

Yea dude, im thinking the same, dont want to go in the "fast" group only to be holding everyone up, im not that savvy on the track and i can imagnie racers getting frustrated.

That said i hope to later in the day get one of the racers to show me around the track, i.e their lines etc.

I would expect if there are 3 groups (slow, touring and fast) then the touring group would be rather large in the morning.

mate --part of my l plan is going to be a newbee familiarisation ride.
Anyone new to the track and the slow group will get to follow me (or a fast guy) around at half pace. This will be before we start the actual "real" ridingIts going to be a 4 lap session just to get an idea where the track goes.
The idea is to get to know what the track looks like and get
seriously I'm gonna mix In a couple of the race guys so everybody gets

hey guys/gals --there is no need to justify yourselves in any way.
MY NO1 objective is that everybody rides inside their comfort zone.
Im expecting that everybodys comfort zone gets moved up a peg or two by the end of the day.
The important thing is not to stress -were all here to have fun/

Judging by the speed of the medium and slow groups at the last manfeild day I don't really want to be in them again! I wouldn't call myself fast though. Will there be someone at the front who can't be overtaken in each group?

.Your not helping the nervous ones :ar15: :done:

People..... think about it. I was the same for the first track day. Went in the slow group and had a ball. Moved up and had a great ride. Everyone left the track on a high. As I said before it is not a race day just a chance to ride with out cars and shit. You get to know the corners and what your bike feels like when you corner and brake and stuff. I never heard or saw and shit about peoples riding. If you wanted help you just ask. I did and it improved my riding and confidence. And if you want to know who I ask it was More Power from here. Relax you will go home buzzing and maybe Frosty could make this an annual event. Couldn't we Frosty?
Remember everyone going is on your side.
Nice spread over the 3 classes to date. Good to see.
I would be happy to ride in the front of the slower group for a few laps. Make a no passing rule for the first section. Put some cones down the back straight to weave in and out of to keep the speed down and it is a great way to start. But up to Frosty it is his day.

I did it last month with Merkel and although not a fast rider he did ask me to slow down on the back straight (he was, after all, only on an SV650) and fast as they are, le Voxan 996 don't like waiting when there's a safe opportunity to stretch the legs.

I think it's good to have some fast dudes up front so that us more adventurous riders have a chance to up the stakes behind a clear indicator that it's safe to corner at that speed. Good to start a little conservatively then push a bit more. If it gets that the leaders are into lap mode maybe it's time to pull the tribe in and start again.

I posted for you to decide but I aint givin ya carte-blanche. I figure I need to ride/brake/corner faster to get better. Hopefully that = more experience and safer.
Word of caution though: Timing the riders can breach insurers terms and conditions so I advise you to put up a list where people can register that they do not want to be timed and are not intending to "race".

Now if someone just happens to check another's circuit time without the rider's express approval I guess there's no harm in telling the rider what it was.

bugjuice
18th March 2005, 22:33
under no terms is this deamed a timed/race event - I think you might find the almight Frosty will tell ya that.. Anyone wanting to know what they're putting out will probably have to arrange that themselves..

By me commenting about being on the track myself, I was joking that everyone is saying they're going in the touring class, so there's very few in the fast.. don't think my sarcasm really came across then!

and as for the bit about following the faster riders, kinda yeah, and kinda no.. kinda yeah, cos they might show you a 'better line' to take, and you might pick up some pointers, but then more kinda nah, cos the reason they go faster, is cos they know more, where as you're guessing more, which lead to fukups. Plus, the may have better tyres, suspension etc, so they may be more capable of it too.. It's good to push your comfort zone a little under circumstances like this, but not to the extent where you're competing or going to run up the back of someone, cos they have their braking point down to half an inch..

Just take it one step at a time, ay?! as the day winds on, so will the experiance and speed, but no one is Rossi overnight ;)

Guys I've put a heck of a lot of thought into this track day.
I;ve been lucky to have had advise from some very experienced event organisers.
I promise you lot I have thought of or been told about all the points you have raised -actually I've told a few of you what I have planned.
Emphasis on the day is on EVERYBODY having fun at their own pace in a SAFE enviroment.

19th March 2005, 01:44
Good idea to mix it up a bit slow with the fast. Nothing like have a few mobile chicane's to make it more interesting. Teaches the faster ones how to pass. But keep it safe out there guys have fun. Enjoy the day.

I don't have any intention to wreck my bike - I quite like it in one piece & I don't need to impress anyone so I'm looking forward to having fun. I am also expecting to learn heaps.
I'm really keen to try different suspension settings as I can concentrate on the different handling of the bike instead of cagers comimg around corners etc.
For anyone who can help it will be appreciated. I am going to set my bike up for my weight by starting with the "sag" section of the following website & will be prepared ( with shims etc. ) to play with "ride heights" etc. on the day.

Closer to the day Ill post a new thread with directions etc.
basicly from dorkland head into Taupo township -at the very first roundabout turn left -going past woolworths. Stay on that road for aprox 8 minutes and you should be at the track. -you will be out in the country again so dont worry.
and yep spectators will be free.
Better still stick ya hand up to be one of my pits bitches or marshals and get two free track sessions.
