  • Marshals urgently required for Hampton Downs round of Nationals

Nationals - Hampton Downs Motorsport Park 15~17 March 2012

    G'day All,
As most of you will know the Auckland Motorcycle Club will be holding it's round of the Nationals over the weekend of 16~17 March 2012 at Hampton Downs Motorsport Park

Like most organisations we can always do with a few extra pairs of hands come Race Day(s) - so if you’ve ever wanted to experience top class motorcycle racing first hand “Marshaling” is where it’s at – you simply don’t get closer to the action than these guys & girls do short of actually racing yourself !!!

We need a minimum of 18 Marsahls for Friday afternoons parctice sessions & 31 minimum on both race days...

Those of you are interested in giving up a couple of hours of your time over those days are invited to contact Ange (Chief Flag Marshal) on 027 684-0552 , ms.chief.angel@gmail.com or myself on 027 242 7639 or scottzx12@gmail.com – free entry to the meeting will be provided on the day(s) you are marshalling as well as lunch & drinks during the day, we’ll even throw you some petrol vouchers to compensate travel expenses...

Please give it some thought & pass a link to this thread along to anyone you may also think would be interested

This year the A.M.C.C has made a significant investment in making this meeting a "Family Day Out" environment with onsite activities gaurenteed to keep kids of all ages entertained, they include a live band, trade stalls, face painting, 1 hour endurance race to name but a few - come along, give us a few hours of your time & enjoy the party atmosphere when your done

Thanks for taking the time to look this over & we hope to hear from you shortly...

    Cheers

I marshal and get paid at some events.

I marshal for nothing at other events other than a free lunch and the enjoyment of seeing others getting their jollies. It's my way of putting something back into the sport that I get a lot of enjoyment from.

And those are my sentiments - not looking for an argument as often happens here.

There is every chance that MNZ will, in the next year or so, insist that 'properly trained and certified' marshals be present on every flag point. Next will be they will have to be trained first aiders too. This can only be a good thing, in terms of meetings being staffed with people who know what they are doing.
The downside is that it will become even more difficult to attract sufficient marshals at every meet (it's hard enough now). Once that point is reached, the marshals will have to be paid more. Especially those who travel some distance to do their thing.
The money that marshals are paid now is called 'reimbursement for travel costs' to avoid problems with IRD. But the bloke who lives just over the fence from the track gets the same reimbursement as the bloke who travels 200+kms. And the amount paid is often less than the cost of the gas he used, which is one of the reasons why it is so hard to get enough marshals at meeting after meeting. The good, reliable ones are worth their weight in gold - even if they'll settle for a bit less...

I'm doing fuck all on Friday & would rather go & have my fuel costs covered rather than going & forking out a similar amount just for gate entry. I'm expecting to get rather bored but at the same time it may be something I'm happy to do again in the future. I have friends that are racing and I see volunteering as a way of helping them reach their goals.

Wouldn't it be sad if the final round of the N.Z premier road-racing series wasn't able to go ahead at the newest, most flashest track in the country located just outside our biggest city, just because coonts were worried about trivial amounts of money.
Well, it won't happen because the final round is happening at Taupo, not HD.
Coonts moaning about trivial amounts of money?...30 bucks is fine if you have plenty of dosh to spare. Not everyone does. And it would nowhere near cover the costs of my gas.

Any pointers on which corners are the ones to go for. I hear turn one has had a few "incidents"

$30 will however cover the costs of my gas (only just on the Kawasaki) and TBH, I wouldn't be going otherwise in all likelyhood. I don't have plenty of dosh to spare either.

At Hampton Downs us marshals have a special name for turn one (i shall not mention it...) but all corners have had their special moments... it depends on the day...

Sometimes fuck all, except enjoy the racing up close.
Just never get so caught up that you fail to get the right flag/s out to warn oncoming riders of *whatever*.

Generally, appropriate flags for incidents, respond to incidents, pick up riders that fall off, pick up bikes that rider has thrown away and observe racing for issues with bikes and rider behaviour.

The officials eyes and ears around the circuit, full instructions are given on the day, newbies don't need to worry about full details as points chiefs handle communication.

They get a little Marshals badge/side arm to wear and a cowboy hat...but they must hand it all back in before leaving the track.
