How are our gardens doing?

Mine is not doing that well, but I sorta planned it like that.Last year I put too much in,at the same time.So it was crowded, and over producing everything at the same time. This year I wanted to space out the productivity, and the coldest October in 40 years slowed things down a bit...plants just sat in the ground going nowhere. Also because of either my greasy thumb, the weather,or faulty seeds,my growing from seeds hasn't worked out....so today I had to call it quits and bought some seedlings.

I pulled up the last of the lettuce, pulled out the spinach going to seed ( had a great run out of the spinach),and some beetroot.I put in a courgette, cucumber, capsicum,a combo pack of cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli, and some more beetroot.Pulled up the first of my leeks and will have that tonight with a beetroot.I'll give the row of onion seeds one more week to show....then put something else in that space.Staked my peas.

I don't think I'll be getting much out of it for Xmas apart from the leeks.

We have a tiny little garden (about 1m x 2m).
Yesterday we pulled out the last of the silver beet (over 6 ft high!!) and the last 2 winter cabbages (savoy..they are so sweet mmmm), planted lettuce, mesculin mix, dwarf beans, both green and butter, tomatoes and radishes.
I would love the room to grow some peas, courgettes and capsicum.....

Mines doing as expected, were eating from it I guess so not too bad...

In the gardens.... and any spare dirt I can find free around the house
Early spuds are nearly ready (jersey bennies) should be ready in two weeks time, just in time for Christmas
12 kg's keeper seed spuds (desiree) in the ground.
Lettuces, already gone through half a dozen, currently 14 growing.
Carrots, Beetroot, sweet corn, beans, red onions and peas coming along as expected, turnips (new Japanese sweet ones) I've already gone through first lot and second plantings in. If you haven't tryed them yet, look out for them in a Yates seed packet, eat em raw they are juicy and sweet, hardly any have made there way into the pot to date, very yummy!
Broccoli, cabbage and colli are being harvested at present, second & third lot of plantings are in or within the next two weeks. Silver beets nearly buggered.

    In the glass house....
Tomatoes (12) almost ready, cucumber (2) slowly coming along...
Capsicum plant has packed a sad for now and stopped growing Sweet talking hasn't worked so moving onto threats of being ripped out, I'll let you's know how it goes.
And of course me tobacco plants are still slowly growing...

    Hi to everyone,
Mines going good, eating broad beans, several different lettuces, sorrel etc. Waiting for the red onions to die back so I can get some more space. Courgettes, cuecumbers and pumpkins went in last weekend. Sowed some more radishes, spring onions and beetroot yesterday. Disappointed that some things like rocket, mizuna and endive went to flower almost straight away, hot days and cold nights perhaps.

Well it has been a while since I have been in here. My pathetic attempts this year are finally producing. We are eating lettuce, radish, spring onions, peas and last night I picked my first butter beans. The green beans are slow for some reason, they have exactly 5 days to get their act together

Hey Mikeey01, my capsicum is a pathetic waste of space, it has hardly moved at all in 3 months, it has flowered and there is this sorry excuse for a pea sized fruit on it with more very tiny flowers forming, but what is with that? Just sitting there, healthy enough, just refusing to grow.

Could be soil not warm enough. Tried these last year and got loads of small fruit towards the end of the summer too late to develop to full size before winter. Had a good crop of Jalapeno's. You could put it in a terracotta pot in the sun, that would bring it on.

    Hi everyone,
So far so good, have been eating new potatoes for the last month, yum! Radishes & peas on second planting, tomatoes heaps of them, cucumbers so far picked 3. Not bad considering there all grown in containers or buckets.

    Hi
Rapt with my garden this year. The irrigation system I put in last summer and the extra garden area I created by removing a large tree last autumn have paid big dividends. I now have room to do successive plantings and to grow more than just the essentials. Biggest 'pest' in the garden this year is not the white butterflies or aphids. It's my bloody grandaughter ... and trying to keep her out of my snowpeas! Loves them! Fortunately she also loves picking out raspberries and redcurrants so that's an acceptable distraction.
I even found a little bit of room to grow some broad beans which I used to hate as a kid. Wanted to grow them just to give them a second chance.

Broad beans are yummy! But you gotta pick them young when they are still sweet. Don't pod them, cook them just as you would any other bean...delish!

ACTUALLY ... the reason I thought I'd give them another chance is that recently we've seen them prepared on TV by removing the beans from the pods and then removing ther outer skin of the pod. Had some baby beans in a salad the other day and they were quite acceptable.

Garden update: The seeds were planted into trays during October and were planted out into the garden after Labour Day. Beetroot has been doing well and has encouraged another gardener to "get digging"!
Currently the dwarf beans are producing, tomatoes are 2ft high, carrots are slowly improving, lettuce & potatoes are being eaten, pumpkins are being encouraged to spread OUT of the garden area...*mutter*, and the capsicums, courgettes and cucumbers are being a little hesitant in doing much.
I must plant more seeds of carrots and beetroot!

Garlic. Just pulled up most of what I planted way back in June. It looks and tastes really nice. My son has been busy platting it up into strings of garlic, reminds me of "macrame" hangers back in the 70's. Could do with some rain though ( can't believe I just wrote that out loud ). It can rain after the Classic bike fest at Pukee.

I am happy with my efforts this year. It was a slow start for my little garden, but once underway it kept us fed right up until we went camping. Despite asking someone to water it for me while we were away it got neglectd and was feeling very sorry for itself when we got home. However, a bit of TLC and we are away again. I have just bottled 5 jars of pasta sauce made almost entirely from the spoils of my garden, including the fresh herbs and peppers. I had to buy garlic, I might have to have a crack at that too BAD DAD There are a pile of tomotoes still to come, my capsicum that sat and sat has finally decided to go for it! It must have been too cold. I am picking and bottling gherkins and have more beans and spinach underway. So yeah I am happy.
