    Hey guys and girls.

Im just after a bit of advice really.
I really need to replace chain and sprockets on my 88 gsxr. Seems the bike shops that ive been to in napier, 5 star and erikson honda want about $600.... surely it can be done cheaper. Andbody got any ideas or good websites?

Also I heard theres a place who makes fairings. (mine are a bit less than ideal) anybody know of it?

    Thanks people.

I did my Duke recently and the chain was about $200 and the sprockets were $ 100.00 ish.

Flyingcroc recently did BAZ....its a GSX something or rather....he can tell you lots of stuff(ups).

Its easy enough to do, just greasy. you might need a chain splitter/ riveter ( angle grinder, hammer and dolly).

    Hi Jamessmith,
I had my 84 GSX EF 630 chain swapped out for a RK 530 X ring chain and aftermarket 530 conversion sprockets at CycleTreads for $354 (incl fitting).

Either there is something very special about your sprockets (chain costs should be universal) or something very special about your local bike work shops. I'd recommend calling Cycletreads for a price. I'm sure they can ship them to you.

thats great to know it can be done cheaper... But how about a short term fix? Ive been told the chain is linkless, and i checkd, I cant find a link. Is it possible to just remove a link? The only reason the sprockets were to be changed is because the guy at bike shop said it was best to do at same time.

I imagine that it is but doubt that it is recommended.

Best to do the lot at once, false economy to do just the chain. With 100+ hp at the rear wheel everything has to be right or it will flog out pretty quick. Then with the money you are saving - original quote Vs home job and Cycletreads prices- you can buy a Scott Oiler ( 5 star product) and the new parts will last a very long time. Link less chains- just take it off when you do the front sprocket?
Best solution is to buy a shaft drive bike

This is probably a bit late, but I did a 530 conversion on my old GS.
The sprockets came from Z1 in the 'states and at the time were way cheaper than I could get in NZ.
It does pay in the long run to do chain and sprockets as a set.
A poked chain will wreck sprockets in a short time and vice versa.
