Will be working on the Chain n sprockets on me bike eventually. Because it looks like it wont sell... ( !!! ) But just thinking, If i was to do the rest of the bike like i see on here.. seals, forks, rings... all unknowns to me.. how much would I need to spend do you think? to basically do a good overhaul and renew it all? Could easly spend $2000 on cosmetics. But the engine probably alot more im thinking....... Something to think about anyway. Oh and what should I be doing engine wise?. Working on the fact it probably hasnt had anything done since it was built in 88
When I had the head taken of mine recently I definately replaced the cam chain and they also adjusted/changed the cam shims (i didnt even know what they were??)
If you're planning on selling it, keep it just to cosmetics. If you are now going to keep it, then it could cost up to $$$$$$$ depending on how silly you go with it. Engine wise, do a compression test. Before that though, re-set your valve clearances. The compression figures will give you a guide as to the health of your engines valves / rings. From there you can decide whether to operate on it or not and how aggressive with your mods you want to go. As a guide, a set of big bore pistons will set you back around $700-$800. Performance cams another $400-$600 and on it goes. Porting and big valves ,more dosh. Bigger carbs for the modded head, say a set of Mikuni RS38 Flat slides, will add another $1000 to the cost. Programmable digital ignitions such as a Dyna 2000 ads another $600. Not sure whether your GSXR has roller of shell big end bearings. If they are rollers, you won't need to split the cases unless it's done well over 200K. If they're shell bearings, you should renew them and the main bearings as well. Shocks and brakes can be upgraded to improve handling and stopping performance too. By now you could have spent $5K- $8K. Then there's wider upgraded wheels and tyres, etc, etc, etc, etc. Do you get the picture?
Blimey Diesel, that is scary $$ Besides racers, who needs any extra power on their GSXR? Blimmin' grunty out of the box If your still wanting to sell it James, cosmetics and the things that will make it start straight away, idle nicely and quietly are really all that will be needed to move it on.
Difficult to say what it would cost without knowing how it is running and what doesn't work. As mentioned earlier a compression test would reveal whether the motor itself needs work. Otherwise Valve clearances, carb clean and balance, airfilter would be low cost (a few hundy) jobs that can make a big difference to starting, idling and power.
mega bucks eh interesting... very interesting.... Its not going to sell, And im not gonna flick it of for $1 - 2k.. so may as well keep it and work a way to put it good again. will work on getting the test done as well as the obvious repairs
