Hi all Coming up on the 40k belt change for my 04 1000DS. Last time, I paid a shop to do the change, this time I'm considering doing it myself, both to save some money (keep the money credits for a steady tyre supply instead) and cos it feels like I'm just being lazy otherwise. I have a basic mechanical knowledge, and looking the 'how to' vids on you tube, it doesn't look too hard to do the change. However, I know that some things only look easy because the person has done it hundreds of times before and the reality can be very different! Has anyone out there done air cooled belt changes and valve clearances themselves? Any fish hooks, tricks of the trade, or good online resources? (I have the factory parts and user manual). Thanks
Not knowing your mech knowledge I'd ask if you've ever changed a cam belt before? They are easy but just take your time. Pointers.. - Set the engine to the timeing marks, mark the case again if you want to with a white marker so you can't get it wrong. - It pays to clean the tooth gears - Replace the lock nuts with new - Check bearings in idlers - Use a good quality belt (oem if poss) - Double check everything - Turn it over by hand when you think you've got it right. (high gear, plugs out, turn back wheel) - Torque everything up to what the manual says, use a torque wrench! Re the 2V settings, again just take your time. If you done valve / tappet clearances before then you've got a little knowledge and experience in what is required. Good thing about desmo's is you get to buy a new tool (micro) At first it's all new on a desmo, if you've never done them before that is. They are nothing like you've ever worked on. I would suggest start on an easy to get to one first, you'll be on your way after that one! 4V really are a barstard to do with the heads on the bike! Yep a complete and utter utter barstard I tell ya!
When I did my belts I rechecked them a year later and they were quite loose. Well not loose loose, but considerably stretched. Ducati does recommend rechecking anyway, but I was quite surprised how they had strecthed so much, so just did a re-tension.
Voltaire did his, posted the result, all went well except that when his ducati's need work I need to empty his fridge...........missed that one..........John we neeed to have a beer!
OMG...someones posted on the Ducati forum.... I just set up the u tube video and followed that. Fridge is currently empty as house painting is thirsty work.
Just a heads up on belts, California Cycleworks (http://www.ca-cycleworks.com/exactfit/) are offering OEM quality belts that are getting very good reviews, average cost about US$40 plus shipping.
try posting on the ducatisti uk forum there is no shortage of technical knowledge there changing belts is a doddle, the most difficult part is removing and replacing the fairing
You could take it to Haldanes.....
The belts really are easy, do it yourself, you'll be proud of yourself when you've done it and you can spend the money you save at the pelican club.
