yes, i'm getting Bruno ready to hopefully get to Taumarunui and back on it's own wheels i've changed the engine oil, and filter. used one of those engine flush oil aditives as well. warmed the engine up, drained oil fully, while hot. put new oil in, ran the engine briefly for oil to circulate through the filter so i can top it up as necessary. now, the new oil in the sight window is alredy black! just do another oil change straight away? or am i missing something??
I had heard that after a flush, you should only run the bike for a hundred km or so before changing again as the post flush residue needs oil circulation to clean it out.
yeah, good point, i wondered about that ... though no mention of it on any of the engine flush products
You might want to change your filter as well. It will be chock full of the residue
Yeah, the old filter is the main culprit in discolouring new oil. I only change my filter every second oil change. It's not a big deal having the oil slightly discoloured. IMO, not worth flushing the engine.
it's hard to tell just by looking at the small window but it appears to be more than just a slight discoloration and the filter was new. that's what confused me hence this post. oh well, maybe i'll just forget about it in a few days, lol
i ran my oil to the bottom limit before changing it....changed oil and filter (and seals)....my oil is dark but then it only takes a very small amount of dark to colour a clear liquid
A straight oil change also leaves a bit of the old oil in the motor anyway. After my engine strip it took 4 litres. I think a change with filter is supposed to need 3600 ml.
Likely the 10% retained is sitting in little pockets, corners and ledges where the thickest build up of contaminants have settled. If the flush loosens sludge buildup and clears oil gallerys etc then the oil will flow faster and possibly move a bit more of the old residue (now loosened) in those little nooks and cranies that the 10% usually settles. Make the nice clean oil (& filter) all dirty. A suggestion is to use cheap and nasty oil for the first change as it won't be in long enough to break down and saves a few $
Just change the oil and ride it. It will darken up quick enough, regardless of which way you go about your oil change. Stop being pedantic and enjoy your bike.
thanks guys, the last three posts all make a lot of sense. i wont rush changing the oil again but will shorten the service interval for the next change.
