So i took old slabside out to work thismorn. and its doing it again. It will start and run cold with choke.. but will stall when warm, I and Jase have played with idling screw to make it right and it works... but only temporarily. gaurenteed the next time i ride it it will stall without enough throttle... or even as soon as a half hour ride... any ideas? maybe needs a tune? I used to run without choke if engine was warm. But now not a chance. An old work guy who thought he knew what he was doing tampered with the timing chain. could this have anything to do with it? and while on that point. when should timing chain be replaced? bikes only done 83.000.
from little i know: it sounds like carbs adjustment. but you need to make sure that timing is ok (though i dont think there's that much adjustment possible to get it to run poorly). more importantly the valve clerances need to be in spec before fiddling with carbs. valves out of spec can account for bike running well only when warm/cold and not running well when cold/warm (i.e. vice versa). this is assuming the cylinder compression is ok accross all 4 cylinders
It doesnt idle that smooth, Tappets probably overdue for a adjustment, Didnt have to much if a look at the idle issue, was sorting out the super loose chain You obviusly got a your sump bung sorted, We might need a round 2 on the Gixer at Wickles , good chance for a meeting about the april rally
As Psyguy said, start with a valve clearance check, and then do a compression test. Once you've established that everything is OK, move on to ignition timing, sparkplugs, HT leads, coils etc, bearing in mind that older coils can break down when hot. THEN you can mess around with carbs. It's best to eliminate the stuff you can measure before touching the carbs IMHO.
I had a similar problem and found that it was a vacuum leak (a common cause of poor running) a quick and easy check is to set the petrol tap to prime (it bypasses the vacuum diaphram in the petcock) and see if the problem persists. If it doesn't then you have a vacuum leak in either the petcock (don't re-kit buy new cheap as and more reliable) or the vacuum hose.
jase.. no. the bung isnt sorted.. the bung i have fits in the thread well, but it doesnt have a flange. so therefore no washer. there lies the leak. Am keen to meet anytime cept sat and sun morn (working) to put ideas forward about rally. and maybe have someone explain this mechanical stuff to me in stupid terms. Im a builder. and an old boss use to describe me as "Not very smart, But can lift heavy things"
fuel tap to prime? I have off, main tank, full on and reserve. i think. compression test? i can do this without special tools? and valve clearance do i have to pull the carbs out? then ignition timing???? lol

Max Headroom - Today 17:27 OK James, it's time to move AWAY fom the bike while holding anything remotely resembling a hand tool . . .

Hey James. Try the fuel tap on 'full on' next time you go for a ride (assuming you haven't been on that setting) Maybe better to ignore "off" and "Reserve" and try the setting/s that remain (I think there should only be three positions)
rgr so fuel tap on on... will do that tom when i ride it.. and max... u mean i cant adjust carbs with a swift tap of hammer?
To adjust carbs the proper tool is a Paslode framing gun, I have one if you need to borrow it. All we need is the Harley to supply a suitable air supply
