ok...old bike...gaskets hard to get...i know you can make your own....but .are the silicon gaskets ok? would you use them on the crankcase?...in my TR1 i have a strater motor problem, took it off yesterday and gave it an overhaul...to get it off i needed to remove the rotor cover which meant draining the oil etc....the paper gasket broke.....i have used silicon gasket but having slept on it i am worried it may break down??.....it says up to 250deg...and ok for oil etc......but i worry...........
Silicone is ok for fixing a break in a gasket. Just a wee blob. But don't ladle it in. It won't break down but the danger is that Tony bits of the silicone squeezed out when the joint is clamped up break off and end up where they can do damage - in oilways for instance. Personally I never use anything but Hylomar gasket paper shellac and grease
THATS WHAT IM WORRIED ABOUT, THANKS FOR THAT iXION....sorry about caps im not shouting!!...
I use gaskets where they were originally intended but engine cases like VW, Ducati, Triumph use a 'silicone' type and they are not a problem as long as the surfaces are 'primed' and not too much is used ( fine line between too little and too much. Can't think of the stuff at the moment but I'm sure its Loctite or summit. Hylomar.....do they still exist...??? I used to buy it at Halford in the UK ...came in all colours...and Rolls Royce once used it....in as much as the Queen uses Branstons Pickle...and smokes Dunhill
Loctite Master gasket is the stuff you are thinking of Volty, come in a syringe tube, red/orange runny stuff. All the new car engines have a Head gasket, a few seals and maybe a rocker cover gasket. everything else is silocone/ rtv. The surface has a recess on one face that the silicone goes in tho. The new type engine gasket silocone is good stuff, It got a bad name 20 years ago when there wasnt many types and any type got used and caused trouble in engines. As Ixion said the problem is from using to much and the dags get in oilways and filters/oil relief valves Another thing to think of when using silocone only, is if the cover is designed to have a clearance you lose as there isnt the thickness of the gasket in place.
I use the orange stuff and spread it on real thick, that way I know what parts of the bike I've worked on...
Paper gaskets are easy to make, copper ones and head gaskets I get Gaskets Unlimited in Kumeu to make for me. Generally because I am dealing with multiple interchangeable stuff I get a few made at a time and it works out cheaper that way. I get my paper from a local gasket maker by going through their off cut bin and taking the staff a couple of packets of bikkies, and not the cheap ones either- Mallowpuffs or Tim-Tams only. They like me there You can buy a hole punch set pretty cheaply and if you always use a suitable medium to punch against like a nylon block, they will be a lifetime investment. I got a set which covers most requirements then picked up a few larger sizes at second hand tool shops and swap meets over the years. You can also get punch sizes at craft shops for leather dome fitting kits etc and they are good for the holes needed by dowls and the like. RDjase As Ixion said the problem is from using to much and the dags get in oilways and filters/oil relief valves +1 Scary stuff, you can lose an engine because of it. If I really, really have to use silicone I use the edge of a razorblade to spread it on so only a thin and even layer is left on the mating surfaces. The old finger spreading is uneven and can add contaminants to the goo, plus it is a bugger to get off and messy. Soaking paper gaskets in clean oil bfore they are to be put on (for oil retention sealing) helps them swell and aids in a good seal once nipped up.
this is like gowing shopping for milk...there used to be only blue top.....now there are hundreds to choose from.....i used as little as possible, i was aware of the clearance issue...and checked that would be ok....i am thinking i will get some gasket paper and cut out a new one.......the trouble is i don't know if i have fixed the strater motor for sure and i need to put it back together to run it....so it may need to come off again a few more times yet......thanks for your posts by the way..
thanks dodgymiddleeye....i have the leather hole punch...(don't ask)......and will go to repco today and get some paper...
If you soak the paper gasket in oil you can reuse it in most cases. cmoore there used to be only blue top..... There used to be only Silver Top young fella
on one of those english bike build programs i saw them soak them in water to make them less brittle...
English bike building only has to last 10,000 miles then you do it all again.
REPCO....good luck with that. Those fuckwits only know about car seat covers and car wash..... 10 000 miles on an English bike....luxury.... I just bought a T110 crankcase on tm....just need some carrillo or nourish rods now....and some new monoblocs....and a boyer magneto conversion kit.....borable 8 stud barrell....
REPCO....good luck with that. Those fuckwits only know about car seat covers and car wash..... Dont forget the fluffy dice and stereos BNT Automotive have a good range of tools, I get good discount there too, 20 years as a mechanic does that tho. My new job (last 3 years) as a ex mechanic is much better. I even paid for my cambelt to get done ! Some of the tools are OK as i get them to modify and weld bits to for specific jobs, I'm not keen on doing it to my good gear
