Hi all Out for a Sunday blat today, and the faithful 1000DS (04) drops onto one cylinder and feels like the 250 I had many moons ago. Did some roadside fault finding, and have these clues: 1. It is the horizontal cylinder that does not work 2. There is no spark in the two hori plugs. 3. Both coils are healthy (swapped them) 4. It still starts and runs, I had to limp about 20 miles home. The front header gets warm, but not hot (from the compression I guess?). It ran on two for about 1.5 secs on the limp home, but that has been it since the original incident. 5. All fuses I could find were fine. 6. Left it too cool for 8 hours, still no change....boohoo 7. Sprayed all external connecters with electrical spray (worked for the brake light last time...) 8. It happened on a bumpy road (no idea if this helps) It has 40,000km, and has run without a hitch thus far. I've done a search, and there doesn't seem to be much on these symptoms. Seems most problems I have seen have a gradual power loss over time, or misfires/intermittent running rather than just stopping suddenly not to be seen again (apart form the very brief recovery). Any ideas from the Ducatisti? (posted on Ducati MS too...) Cheers for your input
if you have no spark and have elimated the coils it really only leaves the ignition unit, I'm a bit out of date on these but it probably consisits of two pickups and a 'box' . I have had issues on my older Duke with the wiring failing on the pickups, due to them running in hot oil. If you have a wiring diagram you 'might' be able to disconnect each one and measure the resistance on each pickup. or it could be the ignition module (s). sorry ...not much help.
did you swap the HT leads to the plugs????......about the only thing not mentioned so far i can think of
Tried (with fingers crossed) to swap the HT's - no change. Had some feedback on the Ducati MS forum, it is not uncommon, and it seems the ECU is sick. Bugger, though I 'spose I should look as it as a chance to upgrade to a DP ECU/Filter....(or a 1098)
To finish this up - new ECU arrived (DP ECU) today. Fitted tonight, along with an oil and filter change while I had the fairings off, and away she goes first kick from the starter. Quick blat round the neighbourhood and all is very well in the diggyduo household! Seems to rev out a lot better with the remapped ECU and the filter kit.
thats good news DD..........enjoy
