So.here is the latest on the zed.
easiest and I think the best long term option, is complete reco on the motor. Probably a transplant combining th best bits of the 3 of them.
    reason?
There has been a crack in the crank case that has been welded. It wraps around the shaft where the cog between the starterclutch assembly and the starter sits. Lots of play in the wee shaft ( no bloody rude comments thank you very much..o alright go on, someone has to say it) that is forcing the cog out of allignment and chewing out the teeth on the startermotor.

Due to the manner of construction of the motor, its not a section that can be replaced. I know its posible to resleeve it, but really tricky and I am happy to pay for a reco that will get it all right for another happy 100 thou or so miles.
god knows what the rest of the motor looks like. There is a shit load of bits leaking assorted liquids onto the floor.

O well, once its done I know it'll be all good. And I need to sort out shocks and carbs and the electrics while Im at it.

o well, its the way it goes with these bikes. He's a keeper so its worth it to me to spend the dosh on him.

Try that Calli in the HB Ratti.

Lucky you have spares, not everone has a spare crankcase, lucky you. That would be terminal for a lot of people.
I suggest you find a good engine reconditioner, or third party who can get the best parts from what you have and then recondition them to form a good engine. Shame your not in Auckland- I could hook you up with the right people who have been playing with their shafts for years (happy now?)
Be prepared to restore the whole bike now, those motors are good for the long term so it would be crap to have to pull it out again so at the very least get the frame powdercoated while your at it.

I never regretted doing up my Mk1, if the Zed is the bike for you then it will be time and money well spent. Look at Max's R90S- it is the ultimate bike for him, he loves it and 4 years and 20,000 odd kms later it is still the benchmark for the rest of us sorry R90S owners. No regrets, only riding

And like Max, this is what I see when I go down to the garage each day, a mint turn-key bike just begging to be ridden...

As long as I keep the oil topped up

Do it ! The left over bits are fun to create a special out of

A Cafe Racer would be good

A Ratti Special with wooly blanket (and duct tape) custom paint job would be unique

As Dodgy said, I have no regrets with the decision to restore my bike:

This was taken at the Bikes, BBQ & Blues meet in Auckland two weeks ago. The bike still spins my wheels.

Yeah but hells teeth, almost anything could spin Max's wheels, he's as loose as a goose! A good goose mind. Ratti your old machine will be the best with a full makeover.go for it girl.

there are so many variables when it comes to this sort of thing....money....time.....availability of parts....money......space.......equipment required.......money........spare parts...I personally enjoy the little bit at a time theory...keep it riding whilst doing up bits that take a week or so each.....of course if you had a spare motor....

And in your case> avalibility of the dining room Vs SWMBO

I heard you bought your Mrs a mood ring cmoore so you can tell when it's safe to pull bikes apart in the dining room. When she's happy it glows blue, when your caught stripping carbs in the dining room it glows red, the big ring welt on the side of your head that is
