I was taking the tankbag off the 900ss and to my horror found the top of the tank collapsed in. Some of you might recall that I mentioned the inrush of air when I filled up and Bikemad even gave the hose a blow.....thru. Turns out after googling that its a well known Ducati problem.... The fillter vent is either too small and blocks or just blocks. As ever on the innnternet there are lots of suggestions and counter suggestions on repair. Whats the chances of picking up a good ( cheap) tank..... 750ss/900ss 98-02. or carefully pressurising it and hope it pops out..... Should have filled up at Nara...Nawha....Huntly instead of seeing if I could do Taupo to Auckland on 15 litres.......
Yes, you could have ridden to Huntly and gone home via Heatherington/22. There was a guy sellin one last year, the bike that is. He bought a carbon tank and took the original bodywork off but it went with the bike. I saw all this because he was also sellin a Mk1. No real point to my story, the Mk1 was in need of a full recondition. Still no point. Ok that was all. Hope that helps.
Pop it out but restrain it, maybe with duct tape and do it little by little as it would have happened. Need a hand? Might pay to have some one there actually with their hands on the tank top to ease the expansion back into place rather than risk a big 'pop' which could cause distortion and paint cracking etc... I can 'pop' over if you need?
That sucks John Must have a heap of vacume on it, Dodgy is on to it, two working on tha tank and restrain it, have a regulator and slowly increase the pressure, How much weight was in your tank bag? Grantnz 999 wont start sometimes till you open the fuel cap, must have the same issue, he checked the vent and it looked ok, must have another look and will check my monster too
I'll take you up on the offer Dodgy, I'm home doing stuff ( all ) tomorrow...... Yep apparently the fuel injection sucks like a sucky thing and if the vent is not venting the tank collapses.... Tank bag had bugger all in it....rain suit.... Guzzi final drive seal.....litre of ep 90......nothing really. I have a nitrogen tank and reg valve for pressure testing Air Con units....good starting point. Can't even drain all the petrol out....wtf...?
Tank bag had bugger all in it....rain suit.... Guzzi final drive seal.....litre of ep 90......nothing really. Guzzi's dont leak.............................................
I'll give you a call this morning and come over on my way to Deus
Yeah it is a common prob from what I've read on the net. Ducati spares in Dunedin have lots of bits for SS's, used bits.
Yeah it is a common prob from what I've read on the net. Ducati spares in Dunedin have lots of bits for SS's, used bits. .....so I have discovered.....never noticed that one before.Yeah I checked them out on line ....but will need a comfy chair and a whisky before I call them.... But good news.....Dr Dodgy is coming on his mighty steed or possibly the BMW. At his suggestion I have left it in the sun..and blanked up the stubs....might pop out... discovered water in it when draining and a small bubble of paint....that looks like a pin hole....sigh......
Have a look in here, it's been mentioned many times, but can't recall what the fix is. Do a search in this SS forum. http://www.ducati.ms/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=57
http://www.ducati.ms/forums/showthre...tank+sucked+in Found this in a sec, heaps of others there. One of our ride group here recently worked for Ducati spares and is up here now, I'll ask him if he knows of a quick tank fix.
I offer this only because I have read about others using the technique on the ADVrider website. For tank dents and collapses, they have filled it with water and put it in the freezer - ice expansion pops the dent. There are obvious downsides to this, including, I would think, the possibility of splitting the tank asunder ... but it might be worth a try if all else has failed. I spoke at length to a guy down the South Island (he'd just sold a Honda SL100 for $1500 on Trademe whose tank repair method of choice is to cut out the bottom, panelbeat the tank from the inside, then repair the hole. He has completed over 30 restos, so it's obviously a technique that works, not sure if it will work for you or not. This is what my life has become. Scouring every source possible for that skerrick of information that may save me another bill from Econohonda. F-ing old bikes.
I had a tank done from the botton once. A beautiful job considering someone had put a pickaxe through the tank. Right through. In the top and out the bottom.
tank repair method of choice is to cut out the bottom, panelbeat the tank from the inside, then repair the hole. I done a couple like that. Worked best on the old Brits that had flat bottomed tanks . Dunno if it would be so good on modern tanks where the bottom is all perverted.
update: Popped out tank with nitrogen and frige gauges, only about 10 psi. It worked because the vent blocks when the filler cap is closed....due to Italian design excellence. Top still needs some work , might try the guys who do dent removal without having to fix the paint. I took out the filler cap and housing...what a mission, inside is a mix of petrol, water, slime and rust....... I have take some pics and will post them.
