I'm working here for a week.

Back to old school fixing cars that can be fixed, for customers that are prepared to pay to get them fixed. But is the satisfaction worth the long commute? That's why I'm giving it a week....and they are giving me a week to see if I'm up to it.

Do you have to disguise your transport with corrogated iron so as to fit in? Reccommend the Honey ice creams ( turn right at top of hill heading South).

one week seems a short time.......and the last dairy on the left makes the biggest ice creams.....

So it's about 100k's each way? That's gonna wear you down, and put big demands on your chosen method of vehicular transportation.

Back in the mid '90s, I commuted from Pukekohe to Frankton (in Hamilton) daily for almost two years. From door to door, it was 90km each way and took exactly 60min, but I was doing the travel in a company supplied air-conditioned late model 2.2 litre car with full expenses paid. Got a bit tedious though . . . especially the day I arrived at the office and got a call from the lovely Mrs Headroom a few minutes later asking if the keys for her company car happened to be on the passenger-side floor of my car. They were. Unfortunately she had a meeting to attend and kids to drop off at school with no other vehicles available. I had no alternative but to drive back to Pukekohe again. Grrr . . .

I suppose that I could've put up with the commuting distance easier if there'd been no other travel required, but I was doing day-trips to Taupo, Taumaranui and Tauranga on a regular basis, and everywhere in-between. Monthly distances of 7,000km+ were common. The company didn't want to pay for accommodation, so instead they paid through the nose for vehicle fuel/expenses.

it seems like fun to be traveling around until you actually have to do a lot of it....

    Commuting is a pain,

it takes a whole 10 monutes to my work......by push bike

My last job I could get to work by push bike in 3 minutes. 1.50 was my best time lol

Takes me 12-15 minutes from Town to Hillsborough on the bike......30 minutes on the bus....if it doesn't come early.....or 45 in the car.

I find the idea of commuting on a bike great until its cold and wet.....

It's 82km,and takes almost exactly 60 mins.I spent a couple of years commuting from Huntly to Mt Roskill,95km and took 65min....and before that spent 45mins going 17km.I prefer just plain open road driving/riding with no problems to sitting in traffic just crawling along.A BFTP bike doesn't really stack up on this sort of commute...apart from racking up the kms,the extra cost in tyres alone would negate the fuel savings. The Pajero is getting the biff, and the NX Coupe is a free car....but one has to look for a replacement.

For the last decade or more I've been frustrated at not being able to fix cars - consumer rights means you dare not attempt some repairs for fear of repercussions, some repairs are just not worth the time and money spent,or customers just won't pay for fixing little things. So now I get to fix little things on old cars that just don't seem to be worth the expense.Like all the time to strip a consul ashtray out of an S class because the spring loaded opener isn't working...it's just not what anyone would want to pay to get done these days.Doing a headgasket on an E280 today - same engine as my C220 with 2 more cyl. This one is from Whangarei.By the end of the week I'll know if I want to go back to my safe boring job.

Yeah,it's being a glorified car wrecker. If I took this job on it would be in 2 parts - one as parts manager, sourcing parts off the yard and shipping throughout NZ and the world. And also fitting those parts into customers cars, and general repairs.I'm certainly doing a lot more involved work than I've done in a long time...it's like going back 20 years in the mechanicing game.I enjoyed it back then....am I going to enjoy it now?...?

If your boss is relaxed and you are paid well, you probably will enjoy it.
