I suspect old is before you are born..... to me the 50's is ancient.... Whats the oldest vehicle you have owned? I had a 1954 VW beetle...but it was only 26 years old at the time, now we have a 1969 beetle which is 40 and to me it seems almost modern. My 16 year old thinks its reaaaaaaly old and retro. I like it because I can pull things apart and I can see how they work....not one electronic part in the whole car
An Austin 8, which was made pre-war, and then again post-war from 45 - 47. Can't remember which year it was but it was old. It had rod operated brakes. The 'servo assist' kicked in when you lifted your arse off the seat to increase pressure on the pedal. Nothing like having an Audi in front of you do a sudden on-the-picks-lane-change-with-.4-seconds-of-indication." You'd have to stop and pull the seat foam out of your fundamental orifice. It had air conditioning. This comprised a little silver handle on the dash that wound the front window open. It was just like riding a motorbike, you got bees in your eyes in the summer and wet when it rained. The really really weird thing was - the chicks loved it! (Stupid things).
My first car was a '51/52 Ford Prefect (defect) I flogged it around the streets for about six months before it died. I was limited to daytime driving (usually) after I put in a 12 volt battery and had very bright lights for about 5 seconds. Lots of smoke and red hot wires coming from under the dash, but everything else kept going. It had a habit of lying down on corners, so I tried to carry a few passengers everywhere. Hoist it back on its feet and away again.... By God, the cops were tolerant back then.
What's old? Why, that would be me! The oldest vehicle I *Owned* was a 1930 James. The oldest car I *owned* would have been my trusty 1937 Hillman Minx. Wonderful car. 40 mph flat out, no speeding tickets!. But it kept on going. It cracked its cylinder head (side valve) and started leaking water, so I plastered a bit of card board with araldite and stuck it over the crack. Worked perfectly, still there when I traded it several years later. But, I learned to drive (cars) in a 1926 Studebaker .(I think it was '26). No front wheel brakes, no electric start, no synchro on the gearbox. I pestered my father to teach me to drive. OK, said he, but you'll learn my way, then you'll be able to drive anything. Sure, I said, and then he brought home this Studebaker. "Where's the starter button, Dad". Isn't one, start cranking. Took me two weeks before I was able to start it (some of that time I was out of action nursing a nearly broken arm. Don't forget to retard the ignition!). On bikes, I reckon 'old' means flat tank. On cars, tiller steering.
Oldest car I've owned was a 1938 Chev Coupe - even with a chick magnet like that,it couldn't help a puny, pale, pimply 18 year old.In 1971 it was still a perfectly usable everyday car,and there were lots of pre war American cars in daily use back then.At 16 I had a bike 2 years older than me,but it was still less than 20 years old.I've very seldom owned any vehicle newer than 10 years old - 10 to 25 years seems to be the range I work in. It's all to do with what is dropping out of ''trendy'' - when it's considered uncool and not fit to be seen in the drive, then it's cheap and a bargain....then I come along.Bottom feeding,it's the only way to be in the vehicle market as far as I'm concerned. Why do I own a 1987 R65? Check out the prices, you can pick up an airhead in good nick far cheaper than a UJM of the same year, and the BMW will be better maintained.
Oldest was a '48 Beddie, oldest bike.....The Ambo! Surprise! My current car is the newest I have ever owned and it's 19 years old, don't even know why I bought and after watching "The Cove" I wanna sell it. http://www.veoh.com/browse/videos/ca...5526167NHrtQTG
my first car a 52 morris oxford...........like a big morrie thou.............a couple of 52 easyroll prefects like dadpoles talkin bout.............both a breeze to start on the crank if you didnt get it right on the mighty 6 volt 1 attempt start proceedure.............and still got my 52 ford pilot truck............52 was a good year it seems............
My daughter informs me that anything older than the 80's comes from the Olden days. But I guess being a 2000 model she WOULD think that, oldest son reckons anything from 60's rates as old school- gee thanks son.
You guys are olllld! First car was a 1986 Nissan Pulsar an it was half dead when I got it in 2001. (hahaha) It was a step up from the FA50.
No James, you is young!! The oldest car I've owned was a 1929 Dodge. I learned to drive on a '55 Mk1 Zepher. Best old car I owned as a teen was a '37 Studebaker, genuine 90 mph top speed.
first car I had finanial interest in was a Austin 7, my older brother and I paid 100 pound for it, that's pre decimal days for you younger ones. but learnt about brakes ,steering etc in a Series Two landrover
Young James is a cheeky wee sprout. I think the oldest vehicle Ive owned might have been the 60 something morrie van and the early 70's mini station wagon. But then, Im not as old as some of you old farts.
Yeah Ratti....we should form a yoof section..... I bet Motu wishes he still had the Chev... I can see him now cruising up and down the main street in Huntly with Dodgy in his Beddy Bus....
I wish I still had the Chev,I'm sure it's worth a tad more than $150 now.I grew up watching the Bodgies and Widgies, driving around in Coupes and riding Triumphs...had a taste of both.I had to make a choice between the Chev Coupe and the 1957 International AS110 pick up....the Chev could do 16mpg,and the Inter 4 mpg around town. But the truck could carry my dirt bikes,so stuck with the International. They are worth a lot of money now too.
I had a bit of a think about what is considered old and came up with this: A bike is old if you have a sense of trepidation before a long trip and a sense of elation when (or if) you actually make it to your destination. How's that?
