The Yello Peril is finally running, vinned, warranted and regoed. New plate is (by coincidence only) A2FkQ. 2 fkin quick .. maybe not the most appropriate for a CB125. I've got a folding walking stick to take with me, now it's time for some ran tam.
very cool work, pic and the rego plate!
oh, and the bike name, too !
Cooler than a cool thing in a freezer.
looks great bender...was that the original colour?
It would have been blue and white or red and white - but I bought it like that from Voltaire and have restricted myself to getting the thing running and doing a heap of little things.
W@@W...looking good...whats it go like, and what was the problem getting it running....C'mon....fess up. If I recall from when my wife bought it ...beige and white....?
It goes very well, pulls well to about 50mph (speedo is in mph) and that's about it. It will get to 60 but it takes a long straight The brakes are just astonishing. Barely have to touch the front to haul the bike up. The major problem was that the exhaust header pipe was blocked. It looked OK from the outside but the inner skin had festered until it was almost blocked. The bike didn't like it. It didn't help progress when I managed to reinstall the advance retard mechanism 180 degrees out, reducing it from chugging to nothing. I'd like to take credit for getting it going but that must go to Lloyd May from Kingsland Motorcycles who found quite a few little things wrong (including my advance retard cock up) and sorted them. According to Lloyd, bike shops like his are inundated these days with bikes bought off Trademe and they have multiple problems, a real headache to sort out. He had a CR 500 in there that the bloke had paid top dollar for and the engine was rooted, nearly two grand worth of bits needed, and the new owners were heading for court. Reducing the headlight bulb from 80/100 watts to 50/60 meant the matchbox-sized battery is able to keep its charge and the beast keeps going. Pipe is from a GL145 and it looks OK I reckon, and with a little reverb chamber in the end it sounds really good. Coffee at Deus next week anyone?
80/100 watts??? Now that is ambitious...
Hard to imagine Lloyds shop being inundated these days....ah I remember it in the early 80's.....when Kingsland was a dump. Yep ol Tom spent a lot of time ( and money) on that bike...alloy mx rims, fancy tls front drum, 12 volt conversion....powercoated everything.
I decided to take it to Lloyd after going in to Cyclespot and asking if they'd have a condenser. "What's a condenser?" asked the callow youth behind the counter. I'm not knocking them, they obviously don't get many requests for bits for ancient points ignition systems these days. They did get back to me later and said they could get a CB125 condenser, ex Japan which is pretty impressive when you think about it. Lloyd seems to get enough work to keep him occupied, but he has a very bad back and is limited in what he can do. I don't think he's got much longer in that place before it gets too much for him. It's like a time warp going in there, it reminded me of Papatoetoe Motorcycles and Weston-Webbs in Otahuhu, places we used to frequent when we first got into motorbikes 40 years ago. The Peril has been beautifully built and is mint wherever you look. Even the guy at the VIN place was impressed and said that someone had put a lot of time into it. It's quite a special little bike and I'm enjoying owning it. The only problem is that wherever you go, people want to talk about it and bikes - which is great fun but it tends to throw your schedule out the window.
I'm really glad its gone to someone who is getting some enjoyment out of it. Tom went to Canada in the 90s and gave it back to me as it was originally my wifes in the early 80's. He'd be pleased to see his handywork appreciated. I found another yellow powder coated bit....some sort of tool box? I must pass on at some point. Hope you put new tyres on it as they are 1993 vintage.... ( you'll have Dodgy going)
I did take it for a bit of a spin to blow the spider webs and Morepork nests out of it and came back to find the rear tyre all split (I knew they were hard as a schoolboy watching a Scarlet Johansen movie and more slippery than the whole senior management team from Hanover finance). Didn't fancy a rapid de-inflation at speed so ... it now has some nice new Mitchelins.
what year did you get it registered at....?
Tried 1970 but they found the original reg date at 1973. Bastards. Just been for a blat up to Orewa and back. Beaut day for a ride.
