Sunday 23rd January BFTP TT Blow the dust of the Pudding Bowl and strap yourself in for 3 laps of the legendary New Zealand Tourist Trophy circuit then lunch and hopefully a tour of the island from a local tour guide (AKA a mate I will be roping into it) This will be a gentle pootle as all of the roads on the circuit are 50/60kmh but nice and twisty with stunning views. Look out for Devils Bend Please list your interest in doing this run and I will organise the ferry sailing times and you can make your own bookings. We will be using Subritzski's ferry at Half Moon Bay probably taking a 10am sailing. If you can't afford to take your bike to the IOM, this is the next best thing...well not really So any takers?
Sorry I'll still be out of town but I reckon, on that "fast straight" that I could get the Yello Peril up to about a stonking 55mph. Great idea for a ride.
Tourist Trophy? Sounds like I would qualify, lol But I may be out of town that w'end...
Could I take my Bicycle instead....I could manage 10k and need the exercise....
Yes the circuit is perfect for pea shooters. If the interest is there I could book us in at one of the vinyards for lunch but really there is no shortage of great places to eat, we could even have a picnic on the beach somewhere my local mate can come up with? As in get a feed on the go and rock up to a beach reserve? Sure it is short and low speed but with the amount of corners on the back sections it is fun. In fact the whole idea is so silly it should be a fun day if the sun is shining and the seas are calm True Blast From the Past run. I should get certificates printed up for afterwards so you can have your name, lap time () and date done on a circuit map for the garage wall
The fast straight takes balls - it has a kink.Of the fast (?) bikes I had there,a CB750,GT750,XS650 and a borrowed XJ750 - I was never able to crack the ton on the Onetangi Straight.I would get up to 95mph on these evil handling machines, then back off for the kink, and there was never enough room to hit the ton, whichever direction I was going. I haven't been back for years,so calendar permitting i might be in.
Here is some history on the circuit: "In 1931 the first New Zealand Tourist Trophy was run on an unsealed road on Waiheke Island and was won by Sid Moses, the man who later introduced decimal currency to New Zealand." “It isn’t by accident that the first New Zealand TT races, in 1931, were held on Waiheke; the Hauraki Gulf island being chosen because of its similarity to the Isle of Man – a rural island lying a relatively short sea journey from a major population base” "The race started in Ostend. The route was along Belgium St, Ostend Rd, Onetangi Rd and then around the Seaview Rd loop. Each lap was 6 3/4 miles. 1931's race was 20 laps but in 1932 this was increased to 25 laps giving a total distance of 168 miles." Link to Google maps TT course: http://maps.google.co.nz/maps/ms?ie=...a19ff7bea50a41 And from Rod Coleman the final winner at the NZ TT: "The 1953 racing season with AJS was very frustrating so I agreed to change to Norton. But shortly after this A JS purchased the Norton factory and made me stay with them. However Norton did agree to send me a works engine for the 1954 New Zealand and Australian season. I used this to win the New Zealand TT & the Australian TT. As well as all the other races I rode in New Zealand. All of these results are in the back of my book "The Colemans"." Oh gotta find his book... never knew it existed. Can't find any pictures to post, seems time and the internet have lost them but have seen a few pictures in books and it looked pretty knarly alright Hey Motu, I can have that lightweight 750-T prepped and plated if Mrs Motu wants to come along too. Be a bit of a trip down memory lane for both of you
Now that put a smile on her face! She is very tempted, and shocked that someone would offer her a bike to ride. But she has just taken the R65 for a ride, very pleased with what I have done with the handling...can a Guzzi get that good?
Darn tootin' it can, the weight is fractionally higher up, until you fill up the BMW's Exxon Valdez sized fuel tank, then the Guzzi will feel lower. Frame is all straight bars like the big block bikes and Lino Tonti had a hand in it. Finally they have air adjusable forks for incremental damping tuning with linked triple discs and they don't look like a BMW...
can a Guzzi get that good? Go for the Cali.....
great idea dodgy...i will see what i can do with my bikes...might be the insentive i need...
yeah sounds like a hoot dodgy but will be at Kumeu Hot Rod show that weekend..............rumour has it this will be the last one so thought id drag the old pilot out and get along there for a squizz
The fun police have destroyed Kumeu Bog Rod show. A show in practically West Auckland and the fun nazis patrol the place evicting Westies just for being Westies so as to not upset the 'general public'
think its more a case of young pissed westie fuckwits brawling vandalising and stealing shit at night from display tents combined with the excessive rates the organisers are charging for swap meet sites and display areas thats killed it dodgy............swap meet was only half the size it normally is last year and one guy even had his car, datsun 120y,torched after being a dick doing dohnuts on the grass down in the arena and crashed into some other geezers rod......
I've been to enough Kumeu rod shows to not ever bother going again.Apart from the odd gem,it's just the same old same old....and I don't want to see another '64 chev with 20'' bling wheels.I like stock or subtle,I hate the modern trend of a lowered stock car with silly wheels - do it to a Honda Accord please, not to a classic.
