You need a blind bearing puller. Essentially 2 thin blades which fit behind the bearing, bolt together and then you pull off like a standard puller. Try a machine engineers, engine recon place or if you get really stuck, Sulco tools sell them.

Alternative would be to shove a sheetmetal plate behind the bearing and press it out, or cut through the bearing with a cutting disc and smash it to bits with a cold chisel which I find most satisfying

Is that a retainer next to the bearing? That will have to come off too.Without a bearing separator and press,I'd treat it as a rear wheel bearing in a not very well equipped workshop. You might need another pair of hands with gloves and a steady nerve.Put the retainer in an open vice,so it's resting on two points, and then hit the retainer with a large cold chisel in the centre, with very heavy blows,do that in two or three places and it should spread and come off.Open the vice some more and set the bearing on two points, cover with a rag,and smack the outer race with very heavy blows - this will shatter the outer race and you can remove the cage and balls. Then I would apply heat to the inner race to make it soft, then treat as the retainer. If your hammer should miss the target, make sure you hit your hands rather than the gear.

I've got a blind bearing puller.....you could come over one evening and we could have a go, heat it up with mapp gas...
then resort to the other methods.....I have an assortment of hammers

cmoore, I cut right through the outer race in 2 places with a cutting disc, rip the shell and ball bearings out then cut 2/3rds the way through the inner race in 2 places again- and while it is still hot from the cutting I spread the cut with a cold chisel then smack the inner race off.
    Rough?
Yes a little... but very satisfying

Gas axe. The ultimate solution if even the BLOODY BIG HAMMER fails . (seriously) .

I was VERY nervous trying this on for the first time - on the lower tripple tree bearing (similar situation as on your pic, cmoore) but it worked a charm. Now Dremel is one of my best friends for similar scenarios (e.g. stuck fork seals).

But with an offer of a proper tool, I think I'd go ahead with that (precision and care as you say). I find there's something also satisfying in taking an old part off intact and then chucking it into the rubbish bin

Dodgy says the opposite....he likes to get stuff out and use it....

and funny you should say that psyguy.....a couple of the bearings had rings....and i am one of those that keeps everything i remove until it goes back together....and the new bearings didn't come with rings....so i went looking for the ones i removed.....can't find them....really pisses me off..........
