So, about 25000 k ago I fitted a nice new top quality O-ring chain to the ffwwabbitt. Which has been regularly lubricated (regularly in the sense of it's always been greasy and black) , with one of those spray can things. So, first point, it's now well worn. After only 25000km . That's only about 15000 miles!. I thought those O ring chains were supposed to last for ever (they blurdy well ought to , the prices the charge).I doubt I'm going to get much over 35000 from it. Second point: - Cos the chain has worn, I had to adjust it. But I couldn't cos I ran out of adjustment. So I had to take a link out (not as bad as it sounds, cos it has a non standard rear sprocket and I had to start with the adjusters half way out when it was new. Really needed a half link - HAH . Try buying a half link now! They stare out you as if you'd asked for a Martian sand alligator. Tried explaining, almost as bad as when I tried to explain about gunpowder explosive tyre patches. F' Gawds sake what is it with not being able to get simple straight forward items nowadays.) So, I pulled a link out, and pulled the removed link apart, as you do. RUST!. Rust on the pins!. The rollers were fine nice and oily. But the pins were dry as an abos arsehole. So I reckon the problem is that the orings stop the lube getting OUT, but they also stop it getting IN. compounded by the fact that that stuff in the cans is too thick, doesn't flow. I reckon I'll be going back to plain chains and lubing with an oil can. Dunno why this has to be so HARD. The Brits had it sussed half a century ago, simple oil bleed off the boot waterproofing system.
The Brits had it sussed half a century ago The Germans had it sussed in 1923.... I too had an O ring chain on the spagbol machine and it was flipped at 25000kms....mainly from sitting in japan unused for ages..... outside was nice and oily inside the links had worn and it was very flippy floppy ( sorry don't know the lay mans term for this) Solution a Scot Oiler.... that way i can blame it instead of me when it wears out.
What is this "chain" of which you speak?
'S the thing on the back wheel of the latest BMWs, where they used to have the final drive. Goes forward to the engine, the way the shaft did on the old ones.
Ahhh, you mean the latest range of "Japanese - spec" bikes fitted with a (Chinese made) BMW badge? They don't count . . .
Scott oiler Ixion, or make one and use the scott oil. Installed 3 of these things on 3 different machines and they work like clockwork. Set and forget, then remember to put some more oil in it then forget again. Going to put one on my Norton because it has a chain thingie on it, Max explaineded it to me with the hand puppets and a loud authoritive voice.
So,you got an O ring chain? That don't impress a me much. They are so heavy and stiff, they sap HP I don't have to spare.
I got a plain (non Oring) chain on the SV witha Pixie oiler. Seems to be standing up beter than the O ring job. But good quality plain chain isn't so easy to get nowadays. I am very suspicious of this chain lube in a spray can stuff. It's too thick, hardly even coast the back wheel rim.
Hand puppets? I don't think so . . . I was trying to poke you in the eyes to get your attention . . .
Les, Have you seen the latest Classic Bike? A Virago motor in a Norton frame.. food for thought? I thought it looked neat
They are so heavy and stiff, they sap HP I put a O ring chain on my Duke, was bloody dear. The o ring chain on Tylers FXR is heavy and hard to move the links, Im sure it will be rusty inside and you cant get any lube into it. It will be gone soon and replaced with a nice light MX race chain I think O rings chains are a expensive gimic !
A Virago motor in a Norton frame I don't why I bother with Classic Bike.... last month they had a some twin engined abortion and there was a Harley motor stuffed in a Featherbed frame. They had an article on Darmahs that was a load of bollocks. Now I know why I stopped buying in the early 00's .
I am on to my 2nd chain in 18 years (it needs replacing soon) on my LC and have replaced the front sprocket once. The rear is still original. Its a bit overkill having a 530 chain on a LC but thats whats original fitment, Like all the big multis of the time had 630
Its a bit overkill having a 530 chain on a LC but thats whats original fitment I was going to do a 520 conversion on mine (along with so many other things), think it was an FZ400 front sprocket and was going to machine some blanks for the rear
25000 km? How do you do that! I probably get 2000km a year! I buy a new chain when I'm scared the old one has had enough abuse and smashed cases and locked back wheel into the hairpin is not pretty....
