I'm looking at possibility of starting a Flat Track / Grass Track group. Just putting feelers out round local bike shops / clubs. Main aim is just to have some fun thrashing round.
Initially any old BFTP age bike, either off roader or reworked roadster in an AMA style, then maybe look at running specialist grass track bikes if there was enough interest.
I know it's died a death over recent years but I'd really love to see a revival.
    Anyone interested ?

Just gauging interest at moment. Land wise, guy I work with has a mate on a farm and they already have a couple of courses marked out there which they use, around 60 sec laps.I also have contact details for an ex director in Upper Hutt council who's a keen rider so I'm going to have a word with him.
Bikewise - I gather that one of the reasons flat track died was the expense with a lot of guys using pukka mx'ers. Definately don't want to go there. Really like idea of more 'run what ya brung' format. Could run an handicap system or whatever. I'm looking at running the TS250. And that IS an handicap
I AM serious about getting this up and running so any feedback at all is welcome.

At one time there was talk of making a 200cc limit at Rosebank to get away from guys using the latest MX bike. But no one wants to go there if they have a fast bike - if winning means you just have to spend more money than everybody else, then those people will sink more money into a bike to make themselves look good.

Got a Rickman Petite looking for a donor for transplant, that would be a good weapon.I used to take the old TF100 out into the park across the road and do big laps...even that would make a good flattracker.Still got my steel shoe...it'll need some stelite on the sole.

Maybe if we can get a serious group together we could have a meet up sometime, maybe at sidecar day at Taupo? Otherwise somewhere in Hutt Valley / Welly area.
I'm not looking at getting things up and running until after winter, I still have to get bike built , it would also give us time to find suitable land. I'll check with mate at work, to see if there's any problem with a large group of us using the farm.
I'm also going to do some more publicity and I'll also check with the local car club to see if we could share a track, maybe in return for helping them out with meetings or track maintainance.
How would you feel about that?
AS I say, any ideas, feedback, wacky suggestions welcome.

    Cheers Jase,
They were on my weekend to do list, I'm doing some marketing around the local mx clubs for the fibreglass as well so I'll test the waters there. Also, going to, have a chat to bucket guys. We used to do a lot of bucket TT racing when I was in Hamilton bike club.

Had some very positive feedback from vintage mx riders.
I think I'll have to co-ordinate between us and them to get a dialogue going so we can work out a format that suits us all.
At some point I think it may be an idea to start having a think about what bikes we want in there. I imagine the sort of things we'll want to ride will tie in pretty well with the vmx stuff. My initial thoughts -
Keep to vintage / classic stuff.
Depending on how many bikes we have and what they are, we could have cc based classes or handicaps or combination.
Vmx bikes, modified road bikes, how about buckets?

One of the vmx guys as organised these a while ago and he says one of the issues they had was to have front brake or not.
What do you think ? Personally I'm happy either way.
If we can get some concensus then we can start getting bikes ready. Imagine we should have quite a mixed bag.
Anyway feel free to chip in with thoughts ideas.
The vmx guys have made a really good suggestion for a venue which would I think be fairly central for us all, we may have the farm track in Wellington, so, maybe we could find something Hawkes Bay area as well then we could rotate and make it fair for everyones travelling.
Soon as I know more I'll get back to you.

If you have a nice oval don't allow a front brake - if they are using the front brake they don't know how to ride and are a danger to others on the track. Our Waiheke track had a sweeper and a hairpin, that was great and I would use the front brake on the hairpin, and no brakes at all on the sweeper. If you have MX bikes they are going to want to run knobs - they will cut your track up.On hard pack knobs are not good - but let them use them as it will give you an advantage using better tyres.Read the MNZ rulebook for Stock Bikes in the speedway section.
