They are working hard to collect money off what is seen to be an unfair system.
I do not believe ACC should be on the vehicle but on the driver.

Then you hear they bailed out that old bastards investors to the tune of 1 billion.
Man this place is in for a rocky ride in the next few years...... hang on.

Interesting that they want to reduce the fine though. As for them holding the plate, can you imagine the fuckups that will lead to. Will you get back the same plate or a new one?

In the UK they used to just send you the paperwork and places like Repco would make you a plate......business op there Keef.......

Combine that with the plate recognition cameras like the ones used overseas. Which gives a nice multi-up range of things besides rego. Pays to be all above board, probably once numberplates are held the next thing is to have compulsary insurance attached to the plate carrying vechile like the US and UK etc... no insurance no plate.

I agree Dadpole, totally confident handing over my personalised or even worse, my original black plate got 'lost' or 'upgraded'
Knowing our govt, they would subbie that part out with very little consumer recourse- "Oh sorry about that. We are sending a brand new plate at only minimum cost."
Yay Black plates are special if your bike has a NZ new black plate then it is a naturalised Kiwi, no matter where it's from it will have had enough Kiwi dicking around for it to be granted honorary citizenship. Anything that has handled our roads and crescent weilding populace deserves it.

Plate recognition cameras actually assist plate swapping. Cos all the camera does is determine that plate ABC123 which it sees is current and paid out. Can't determine whether it's attached to a Honda or a Yamaha , let alone what model , let alone what frame number. Human cops can do that (to some degree), but if you have plate recognition cameras, UK experience is the cops stop looking (cos that's what the camera is for, right). SO I think plate cameras might actually be beneficial.

Not that i would ever do such things of course.

The info I read on them Ixion, is that they can match a plate to it's registered body color as well and trigger an alert to which is later checked by a human. Maybe someone can verify that?

'S easy. Register everything as black. How many vehicle's registered colour is correct after 20 or 30 years (also, what bit does it choose for colour matching? My arzhole has at least six colours on it. Not to mention, if a bike only has a rear number plate, how much body colour does a bike show from the rear ? The camera would have to run around to the side.

Come to that, how many humans could identify a bike model mismatch froma rear only shot? OK, a 50cc scooter versus a GSXR1000 would be picked up, but (say) a BMW R65 versus a BMW R100 ? Even a R65 versus a K100 would be difficult for a non BMW enthusiast.

Of course , if they ever get round to RFID VIN numbers, then we're screwed

At the moment they are not used for traffic enforcement, only for vehicles that are wanted for something, e.g. you did a bank robbery in your Toyota Corolla ABC123, thye will know that by the plate recognition camera.

Meh. As if even Thick Eddie isn't up to stealing some plates to put on the Toyota.

yeah..how long before all cop cars are fitted with this gear and as they drive along it will tell them the details of every car/driver around then and if they have outstanding warranties fine etc........

Hence the need to have a bike with a black plate. Wonder how long it will be befoer we have to trade them for new plates? In the interests of safety of course.
