35mpg.......the Z1R looks better. I had a 81 Z1000j in red with the Z1R fairing...did the Brass on it in , bought it in 84 for $4100, fell off on diesel, got knocked by old lady who didn't see me.... got pulled by the cops more than twice...... stored it for 7 years when I went overseas....had one ride on it when I got back and sold it for $3000.00.

Max HP at 8,500rpm,max torque at 8,500rpm - that's unusual...or haven't I been looking at dyno charts for the last few decades.

Only because you haven't had anything that would register on one...

i like the styling of that bike but i always thought it looks like it's made to go in a straight line only. seing pics of cornering doesn't inspire much confidence...

Dry weight 245KG, add a battery, 4 litres of oil, 17 litres of fuel, 1/2 litre of fork oil and brake fluid and that is quite a beast with a fairly high COG when running a full tank of gas.
The 0-100km/h of 4.2s is quite stunning for 1979 and the 100-0 braking distance of 35M is quite respectable for the time too, and given it's weight, and the fact it is basically a tourer, quite impressive I thought.
NZ is a harsh environment for motorcycles. Not too many buyers in the USA would ever discover what we have with these bikes, they would never get the same workout like our twisty lumpy backroads. Probably comes outside of the design brief

the fact it is basically a tourer,
    Tourers have shaft drive.
While not a big fan of 4 cylinder bikes now I found the Z1000 a great all rounder in the mid 80's....even rode mine up Mr Hutt for a day of skiing after the Brass Monkey. Most of my touring was two up so handling was never an issue, I now prefer lighter and less powerful machines.
I clocked up 200 kmph between Rotorua and Taupo on it when I first got it and did a 12 to 13 sec time at Mere mere. Only time I have done either I think.
