Got any old photos you'd rather forget.... here are some I stumbled accross.... Assembling R75/5 in lounge of Sydney flat 1987. Outside same flat in Newton 1987 Camden Markets...1990..with R100rs
Thrashing the family's "works racer," a Honda 50, on the estuary at Orewa. Nowaday the swat team would be out if you did that. Trialling an XL250 on Baypark speedway, '74-ish, a Honda media weekend - they were pissed off when I rubbished the bike (it wasn't as good as the sideport XL). Racing in the Dead Toad Racing Team 3 hour hare & hound at Woodhill on a CR 125. Definitely a great bike. My full race SL125 - we published this in the North Shore Times paper, earning me a summons from the local constabulary. Note full race jandals. Back in the days when you could ride on Pakiri Beach. And fall off on it too. My first enduro (I'm with me bro Lee - he was seriously good). It pissed down for a week beforehand and he Whangarei forest resembled a rotorua mudpool, except it was cold. Ended up under water with a wrecked engine on my brand new PE175. Good thing me mate worked for Colemans.
The progression of my BSA...I don't have any photos of the '51 plunger, but started out stock, then got 8in over forks, the standard chopper seat and sissy bar, high tank and lots of chrome.I was run down from behind - I obviously survived, but the bike had a bent frame.I got another frame to rebuild it,but then got a 1954 A10 with a blown engine, then a complete engine/gearbox,engine plates etc from a '54 B31.I cut and shut a B31 oil pump kink into the frame, and built this bike from a pile of parts in 3 days - one day of that was fitting a YDS3 rear wheel into it as I didn't have a BSA rear wheel. In the carport you can see my Triton - I had blown the gearbox and fitted a BSA gearbox...it now has no gearbox,it's in the BSA.This would be 1975. This is it in 1977.I had picked up an M20 in bits, and rebuilt the engine first (new piston, bearings and valve guides). The B31 had a small big end rattle - I could have done other things with several motors in my stock, but really wanted to see how the M20 went.I now have a QD BSA rear wheel, original rear guard and solo seat. This is the day I pulled it apart, and sold my BSA stuff. It's 1981,and looking a bit tired after a hard life.It now has a 19in rear wheel and a 21in front,Amal Type 6 carb, and a huge rack on the back. For some reason have removed the chrome fork covers and small headlight, gone to gaiters and big light. Loved this bike...we went everywhere man,we went everywhere.
Mulletaire Got any old photos you'd rather forget.... Nothing wrong with those.
That M20 BSA is a sweet looking bike.
I might have the dates of the BSA wrong - it was on the road for 10 years, built in '74...dismantled in '84.It went through more changes than you see there,it was a B33 at times too. Some more on the drive - this is the Triton, maybe 1973.A wideline Featherbed with a maybe '61 T110 engine and box. This bike was built by Mathew Mc Cahon as a beach racer,he built it out of junk and always laughed when he saw it,or me for years later,he didn't know how it was still running...not realising it had a full rebuild several times.Mathew didn't have much appreciation of his fathers paintings either. All the Cafe fruit, before Cafe was even heard of in NZ...all my mates on Chops just didn't understand. The only other photo I have of it. This is my brothers chop, must be 1971.It had a nice springer front end, well made, but badly engineered - we measured 8in of negative trail...and yet it rode quite well. This is a 6in over Rocket III front end in raked Triumph yokes. It had an ex speedway sidecar engine, and is the most powerful Triumph I've ever ridden...mind you,at 17 anything I rode was fast. A lot of the work was done by Neville Lowe - he extended the forks, painted the tank, made and upholstered the seat, and put a DA on the rear guard. It has an 8 stud alloy head, but previously had a ported cast iron head.Lou Findlay wanted the head for his speedway chair, the cast iron head being better for alcohol, and swaped for this Bonnie head.It was unusual in having central plugs - and a few years ago I was looking at a restored pre unit Bonnie, and saw it had central plugs welded up and refinned...a nice BFTP for me.
outside 336 Wilson Street Chippendale Sydney in 1986, doing a spot of alfresco maintenance. It would just fit thru the door and lived in the lounge....next to the BMW. Outside 22 Broadninton Road Clapham SW4OLU in about 1988, BMW had been restored in Sydney and completed a 25000km trip of Europe....note still have same T shirt on....but due to climate now had shoes.... BMW lived on the street.....could not get it past the stairs....only had the seat slashed in the 3 years we lived there....carbs were stolen off an R100....and the seat of my Z550 company bike....
Sidecar time - the day I got it running,I'd never ridden a sidecar before - down the road to a dead end street, came back 10 minutes later and turned into the drive full lock sideways...sidecar technique sorted. My shopping hack, never registered and no wiring at all. Most fun streetbike ever. You can still see it today at the classic sidecar races. Who the hell would do this to a Featherbed Norton? Or carry a 2 month old baby inside it with no baby seat? We called it Metalstorm.Top gear wheelspin, smoke and mirrors.
OMG..VW meets BMW/Ural...... I wonder if this was the one I saw at a swap meet at Avondale racecourse in 1982/3/4 ish....
Possibly - although I got it in 1985,and it was only just (almost) finished, and the guy had to sell it..he made it a runner to sell. Roy Gardner had one earlier,I remember him riding it in the early '80's.
I even went to look at a Cossack that was for sale....must have been the VW type motor that got me interested in BMW's.......
Is this thread all about me? Out running in the cast iron T100 - all her own work, the only input from me was the SU carb from a Mini. My Dominator 99...Commando cam,SS pistons, twin carbs and Commando front brake. Shaun's '54 T100...still as he used it as Road Captain of HA in the '60's - this photo has been enlarged and framed on his wall ever since. OWL's 650 Mercury.
