Hi All, just a quick intro, I have a T500 J, that I have recently restored to good original condition (not showroom) as I plan to ride it as often as possible, and I have enjoyed doing so, however, in spite of the fact that the engine was brand new, including rods, main bearings, pistons et al, it would appear that I have "done a piston" fukt. I am begining to think that one of the barrels may be from a GT500, different porting, which lead to it running lean! I had the piston skirts h.p.c. coated as well as the domes ceramic coated, can't say I didn't try! Okay so if anyone knows of a pair of T500 barrels for sale please let me know. There is/was a guy in Kaiapoi with a set of NOS barrells but I lost the contact I had for him, shame. If it 'aint smokin it's broken!

Hi Alvin..................welcome. You have a good looking T500. Bad luck with that crook piston. I'd be double checking for air leaks, especially if the other piston has been running well. Do the ports not look identical on the barrells? Perhaps a PO has partially ported the project!

Jace should show up soon. He's a 2 smoke guru, so probably knows where you can source another set of barrells.

That's more like what we need - a bike that uses its oil out the back of the exhaust pipes instead of dropping it on the ground. Nice T500.

I got a a spare (as in spare spare) set of T500 barrels. Somewhere. Dunno what oversize , or wear state but. As far as I can recall, though, no scores or suchlike. Haven't seen them for a few years though.

But running GT500 barrels should be OK, people have done it. There were some porting differences, but in fact the GT was detuned (go figure), so if anything it should run rich not lean. In fact the change in porting occurred in the T500K model, the year before the GT500 (though most of the difference was carbs and manifolds not barrels) .But the difference is small anyway, unless you are racing or riding REALLY hard. Quite rare to blow a piston on the Titan.

Could you maybe have a Cobra barrel or piston (the early T500) they were quite different timing. Or maybe a GT500 crab , that would be significant, and they look the same. Sure your crank seals are good ? that's the most common cause of losing a piston on these machines.

This listing mentioned NOS T500 barrels back in May http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/parts-for-sale/complete-engines/auction-378181305.htm

EDITY: You really need to set the timing by a dial gauge through the plug holes (Suzuki have a figure that allows for the plug hole angle, but I can't remember what it is, but I got the gizmo. Somewhere). Especially if the crank may have been split cos they don\t always go back the same.

Hi Again, I had new main bearings fitted so new crank-seals, I had the inlet manifolds surfaced, so all good, Thanks Ixion, that is the bloke on "tard me" I mentioned, I have just e-mailed him, if I can get nos stock barrels then I will pull the motor down and start again, I have a brand new set of std pistons, rings etc, as well as a brand new set of .5 over. I had steel 5th gears made and fitted, and 4th gear is like new, new gear-box bearings and it has the 1400ml crank-case alteration done, new clutch plates, not like I didn't try!!!!! I have had a chat to Jase so I'm on to it! lol lol. New fuel pet-cock, disjointed I know, just as I remember things! lol New baffles, but they are the newer type, don't sound as deep as originals, any way good to "meet" you all, thanks again, I will post this while I'm still logged on!

New main bearings. Where did you find THEM?? The only source I know of for the centre mains is a guy in Peterborough who gets batches of replica bearings made. At about $500 each ! ( the liters are a simpler matter) . Was the fifth gear hobbing done in New Zealand ? I've got a couple of good spare transmissions but a source of fifth gears would be worth knowing.

PS the logging out is just a time out. You can either tick the keep me logged in box when you log in, or if you do get logged out, just enter name and password in the boxes and click ok, it will post your reply, you don't lose it.

Hi Ixion, I got most of the new motor bits from a guy in France! DinoGT, on Muzzys two troke forums, The con rods are 1.5mm longer and machined to fit, with a 1.00mm ally spacer under the barrel and two base gaskets, the bearings are machined out, with a standard bearing inserted, so easy replacement next time. Dino does have a web site of the same name, his english not so good, but very knowlegeable, he races his GT500, and makes his own programmable ignition. Thanks to you, I have a set of Nos barrels on there way from Kiapoi! believe it or not he got them with a bike he bought about six month ago, from a guy who lives about 1km from me! But I didn't need barrels then! Okay better smoke it up, work to do to pay for this stuff!
    Regards
    Alvin
