Starter motor

    So, this is where the things are at:


    cleaned the commutator and the core:





    soldered the wire that was loose:




    installed new brushes:




    all i know is that the starter now shorts. visual inspection doesn't reveal any + wires touching the housing.

    so, any tips on how to test the components... ? ... if anyone does this anymore... i searched the web and couldn't find a testing procedure using the voltmeter...

    take the brushes out and test the stator wiring first to make sure that is not shorted....or test it if it is out...

    generally what happens is the amount of heat used to solder the joint causes some insulation to melt or a bit of varnish to melt....or it is just the brushes are touching the earthed motor housing...

    if you cleaned the commutator then make sure the spaces are clear of any debri....

    What he said. I think your soldered connection is touching the armature. Looks like that external bolt is insulated from the casing, it may now be touching....ah memories of repairing B and D drills in the Post Office and fixing VW starter motors...whilst pretending they were B and D drill bits....

    That looks remarkably like the POS starter fitted to the Yam XV750 ? The stator bus bars are pigs for touching stuff that they shouldn't when it's assembled. But when you dismantle it, things don't touch any more and it all looks good.

    I think you may be onto it Ixion, some internal clearances between polarities are very small and the insulation quality and design rather dubious...

    the clearances are small because that is all they need to be..i agree your soldering is a bit "large" and or the stud is touching...easy enough to fix ...even if just as a spare for your new old one.......

    the pic doesn't show it well but the soldering is only 1mm thick. what you see is the "head" of the bolt that goes through the housing which is about 3-4mm thick. with the rotor installed theres about 1-2mm clearance to that solder. shoud that be ok?

    Check the insulation around the nut, if the nut is touching the housing, it will short.

    yeah...never let your nut touch the housing........
