in my experience if you get the sender to state the value of the item is under $400 or package it so....maybe more than 1 package if necessary....... the greedy bastards dont seem to bother with the GST thing

I didn't get stung on me clutch cable or clutch cut out switch, nor me other too numerous to mention items, OK, the fuel tap repair kits that DID have the diaphragms in em from P O M M E Land. But I know of a couple of guys who even after paying the taxes ( read thievery) still get their stuff Heaps cheaper than they can buy it e same item here.

"in my experience if you get the sender to state the value of the item is under $400 or package it so....maybe more than 1 package if necessary....... the greedy bastards dont seem to bother with the GST thing"

From memory the current "rule" is that they don't collect less than $50 GST, presumably because the cost to collect exceeds that tax collected. So the if the value of the item incl postage is over whatever $50 is 15% of then you also get hit for the other charges.
Retailers are worried about the amount of online international purchases they are losing out to so they are currently lobbying parliament to get rid of the lower collection limit. If that happens then all the charges would apply to any import!! Hopefully common sense will prevail.

The letter from Customs did not mention a 'threshold" and just said all items imported pay GST. Seeing as they charge you for the pleasure I'm sure it will become more common.
I don't feel sorry for retailers at all...back in the day they had it all sewn up...I used to look at US and UK mags and wonder how stuff could be so cheap......

$38.00 flat fee plus the GST.....
I'd be pissed off it I had only spent $50.00 but the savings on importing is big ticket items.

This link gives a good run down on the current state of play, although a bit hazy on whether the threshold has dropped with the GST rate increase.
