Those of you in various parts of the south island ... with "local knowledge" of the checkpoints ... it may help if "issues" are known about them. I will start ... The "Welshtown" checkpoint in Central Otago (Bendigo) has a steep (up-hill) zig-zag loose and rutted gravel in the first 1/2 km off Bendigo loop road... Uphill should not be an issue, but downhill on road tyres ... heavier bikes ... maybe ... The road provides access to several vineyards, with heavy vehicle number use at rally time ...
Cannibal bay road can be muddy in places. Dansey's can be soft/greasy under tires when wet.... as can the last couple of km to Heaphy Fords on Hakataramea after rain may be a problem Any one going towards Milford....have a good look at the 45 South check point...it was moved to Mirror lakes because there is no safe stopping place at the 45 South sign.
Damn handy idea FJRider, thanks. Us tourists appreciate the extra knowledge
Those heading to/from Clifden/Ohai ... check out this link ... route via Otautau ... http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?q=Otau...hland&t=m&z=11 Avoids Winton and Riverton ... and SEALED ( not many cops either )
I've found this site for accurate maps of any area of NZ. http://www.nztopomaps.com/ Just zoom in using the + or - sign top right
Coming out from Akaloa bay (Decanter) watch for an un marked hump.....why can I not hear any tire noise....why did the engine race.....why can I not feel any road surface...
