Looking at road legal dirt bikes, specifically XR400's....I have an XR200 but its only good for the dirt. Some on Tm are road legal and others are not. I suspect its not a matter of having lights/indicators/ horn and rock up to VTNZ..... My friend has a road legal WR450 and its electric start with no ignition key, lights only work when motor is running...... hmmmm I rang VTNZ and got the 'we only do cars' bit and a number to call who referred me back to them....
Some dirt bikes like the KLX250/300 came with a road kit - numberplate bracket and guard extender,indicators etc. Then there was the fully road legal KLX250 with E start. When I was trying to find one with a road kit I gave up and got the DT230 - fully road legal, and with a spare set of wheels I could turn it into a dirt bike in 30mins. Honda were still making a road legal aircooled XR250 with E start a few years ago - one sat for a long time at Huntly Honda with no takers...dunno why, it seemed the perfect bike to me.
