In that size Bridgestone BT45 or Pirelli Sport Demon are what i would be looking at
as above. very good tires. not very long lasting though. if you want more longevity and still good enough performance on the road, i'd suggest Metzeler. with those three brands i think you've pretty much exhausted NZ market. overseas shipping on tires is a killer though.
i've heard that people also buy front-inteded tires in that size and run them at the back, no prob. i think you reverse the tyre direction though. anyone?
BT45 superceeded and no longer available. Spitfire is the Bridgestone replacement. I am running one at the moment on my Ambo, done 7000+ kms in the last few months on it and it is pretty good unless you want to do a bit of gravel- then it is shit. The main tread is wide over the center of the tyre and provides f/a grip in the loose stuff, real squirmy actually. But otherwise seems to be hanging in there nicely as far as wear goes. Running Sport Demons on the Mk2 and they are ok, just a bit faster wearing than I would like but if your not doing mega kms they should be fine. Reversing the direction and running on the rear is possible, some tyres are made to that- Avon Venoms spring to mind- but I wouldn't risk it, so much goes into tyre design that it would be fool hardy to go against 20 or 30 years of development
BT45 superceeded Best you tell Bridgestone that as I got the Darmah reshod a few weeks back with good old BT45's....was about $350 for the pair fitted.

+1. I believe it's the Spitfire that has been dropped from the NZ range, not the BT45 Battlax. I bought a 110/90-18 Battlax just before Xmas, and was told that the Spitfire is no longer being imported. The Spitfire lasts longer, but the Battlax grips better, IMHO.
Spitfire has been around forever I find it very hard to believe they would retain that over the BT45
