Not a babies one either. You guys might have a clue cos I don't. It is the primary drive chain on my T140 . I cant get it too tension right, loose the tight then loose. The clutch basket does not run concentrically with the clutch hub. I've done a 7 plate conversion all back together as per manual but the basket can move around a bit so I don't get constant tension. The rattle I suspect is the chain hitting somewhere on the chain case when decelerating .
I will convert to belt drive but not before Puke races.
Any hints would be much appreciated

( goes down to shed and gets T140 manual....ummmmm)
I can't see how it can not be running true unless the bearings on the hub taper are loose or stuffed....
when you say concentrically do you mean the clutch springs are uneven causing wobble or the whole centre is moving ....cush drive rubbers stuffed?
What about the chain tensioner that adjusts from below...
...anyway Motu wiill be along soon..what he don't know about Triumphs.....
Where are you as I'm in Mt Roskill...if your local I could have a look....I speak Norton.

The basket or outer case moves laterally . When the whole shit fight is together you can gently hit the outer basket with a soft mallet so that it sits centrally in comparison to the pressure plate & the whole thing runs true but there is nothing to keep it there. The outer basket sits against a type of thrust washer at the rear but does not actually attach to the inner part which bolts onto the gearbox output shaft. Dunno if that makes any sense.

If it was as simple as me old Nortie I'd be home & hosed. & Greenhithe

Meantime back to making the angle grinder powered starter.

    Cheers

You running it at Puke on Feb 4 and 5?
The outer 'basket' runs on a keyed hub on the taper shaft with loose bearings, the inner drive holds it in with a nut and washer. All this is under the cover with the springs. I'm guessing your centre holding nut is loose...the key has sheared or the bearings have fallen out or summit...either way you need to pull it all apart.
I have a clutch extractor tool ( somewhere) if you need it.

I must be really dumb, when I look at the sploooddy diagram in the parts catalogue & go through the parts description there are no bearings.
The clutch centre is OK, it is the sprocket & housing that goes for a wander.

You would almost think that the centre hole in the sprocket/hosing has flogged out [ looks ok ] so that nothing holds it laterally or if you like concentric with the hub/centre

It will be simple , I'm too dumb to see it.

You used to be able to get oversize rollers to take up wear in the clutch hub. With the crap I had to work with there was all sorts of mismatched hubs, baskets and rollers, it's a wonder my clutches worked at all. Check the play of the basket - if you can get some sort of vertical play you will need oversized rollers....if you can still get them, or get someone to understand what you are talking about.

I'll check out these rollers, looks like there are 4 of them.
Back to bits again, I had nothing better to do tonight anyway.
I'll let you know what I find

I'm looking at the 750 Triumph Factory manual....boy are Triumph manuals rubbish....it does not tell you how many rollers...I'm guessing a lot more than 4...they were I think 1/4" x 1/4"
    summit like this...

Basket case, yeah mate all the bits are there. Yeah right

Except all those rollers. You are right the manual sucks, so does the parts catalogue.

    We learn as we go.

Everything needs a good manual and exploded parts book. Best one I have is the factory one for the KDX 200..couple of hundred pages.

Oh yeah, and the thrust washer, that helps with the wobble too. The duplex chain is a lot less tolerant of wobble than the single row.

it is the sprocket & housing that goes for a wander.
BSA one does the same even with all parts correct as per the book, do you know anyone else that has one you can compare it to?
