Oh dear, I appear to have just become the proud owner of a lovely GS750 frame, an absolute steal at $35. Road bike project is now underway Components so far - 1 x GS750 frame (see above) 1 x 1996 Yam 600 Thundercat motor. YES, I know it's not strictly BFTP legal and will probably get me blackballed but I plead mitigating circumstances. Its the only spare engine I've got, the frame is period and it's getting built as a sort of 80's retro. And sticking that motor in that chassis should be genuine 80's handling. Although a Thundercat gives out approx 90hp a Suzi GSX1100 (similar chassis to the 750) around 100 and THEY handled What can possibly go wrong ?
like you said: "oh dear"... but we still want to see your project
1 x 1996 Yam 600 Thundercat motor Shouldn't you be putting that in a sidecar?
Twas originally bought for sidecar, but now i'm Postying instead it's cluttering the place up, and I desperately need a roadbike, if only to get Mrs Yorkie into her Heron Suzuki leathers Now to go measure the motor that's at work and see if it fits. I guestimated with the 550 frame that's here at home and there's heaps of room
Just need slicks, tyre warmers, generator, large van/workshop, caravan...... yep that's budget postie bikes....
+ brolly dollies. They don't come cheap either . . . .
I have my own brolly dolly !! Does anybody live Taupo way who'd mind picking up the frame for me ? I'll pay petrol etc.
I was at HD yesterday Volty. Every racer obviously needs tyre warmers! But they struck me as very un BFTPish.
OI Git orf my thread
Oh come now Yorkie. It wouldn't be BFTP without a little bit of thread hijacking
I have been reading the thread on Postie engine swaps...must be a Jap bike thing as I'd never even think of putting a Guzzi motor in a BMW...tractor or snowmobile yes...BMW no.....(waits for Motu to mention Norumphs and Vintons....)
some of the grades? don't have tyre warmers as a rule....I know this because they get two warm up laps to compensate...which again like the tyres makes the rules in post classic/jurassic strange..
Hopefully (after chasing the guy up through Trade Me ) I'll have the frame by next week. Then I can see if the engine fits. This will result in either OR Anyone care to make a prediction ?
Aren't the carbs on those on quite a steep angle?
Yep, this might be the only issue. I might have to do a bit of minor frame surgery. Carbs are more or less vertical so worst case scenario I might have to move the 2 smaller top frame tubes. I'm going to run K&N filters which will loose height of the airbox. All this assuming I can get the engine in to start with !!
