As I look at bikes for sale I notice a few nice ones manufactured in the 1990-1992 years and first thing I think of they won't qualify for BFTP, better not buy. However thinking about it in the middle of the night (as one doe's) is there a hard and fast rule that they should be pre 1990. Group info states "We are a bunch of individuals who have a common interest, namely riding and sharing tales about our pre 90's motorcycles. We ride once a month. Our rides take 3 - 5 hours including stops and are generally held rain or shine." We dont ride once a month so should pre 1990 be taken as gospel as well. Would it be better to state "bikes older than 20 years" Just a thought
Lol Murray you're a very dedicated bftp member to think of NOT buying a bike because it might not qualify for the group... Unlike some other who shamelessly buy a NEW bike without even asking if it's ok, lol ... just joking Speaking of post bftp bikes, a ZRX would be nice I also always wanted a VFR, in white
As a matter of nterest to qualifing dates, HB CLassic Motorcycle Club now reckonizes any bike that was manufacted 25 years , an I believe other clubs are following or have already done so!
Victoria MC Club have started a post 90's carb class to get a few more older (in a new sense, newer in a post classic sense) racing. Even the first CBR900RR Fireblade is 20 years old now
Well Murray this is going to provide some interesting discussion on Wednesday. While the BFTP does have some rules, I don't think there's ever been a complete set written up or that we necessarily stick to all of them anyhow. Certainly in regards to when we ride as a group that hasn't applied for years now. Can't help thinking though, that to change the basic premise for the BFTP that a bike needs to be 1990 or older to qualify should remain.
You gotta have [B]one[B] line in the sand! And I think pre 90s bikes is that. There's not that many post 1990 that are any good anyway!
A related question is, what if the specific bike was registered after 1989, but the MODEL is a pre 89 one ? Ie the design is 1980s ? I think in pre 89 racing they base eligibility on the year of the model, not the specimen.
Pre 76 racing its the silhouette ( bloody froggy word) so a 78 Guzzi/Ducati/Triumph/Norton ( sorry no jappers as they would win) could race as a 76 or earlier.....you could even build a brand new bike that looked pre 1976 and enter it...even get a NZ racer to ride it....but who would do that... Will BFTP go the way of the Bowling Cub and Bingo as aging baby boomers can no longer be arsed with uncomfortable clunky old shitters.....anyone noticed how big seats are on bikes these days....
Ixion, I like that idea then both my bikes would qualify, first introduced in 1988 but mine is a 1991. Only saying 'cos my '84 has a looooooonnnnng way to go before it sees the road again. But maybe it is not in the spirit of the group.
Newer bikes would have to ride twice and month for 6 - 10 hours and buy coffees for the guys on pre 1990 bikes...back in the days when we did go on runs I used to take the 99 Ducati if nothing else was running, now with the high cost of Rego I can see why people would only have one bike, and if you are only having one get as new as you can afford. 40 year old bikes have cheap rego but they are high maintenance. Someone who knows how could set up a poll on the meetings event thing and ask the question.....probably get about 10 of the 70 odd members vote.... would seem like a fair way to do it.
What if you just made it that the bike must be at least 20 years old to qualify? that way, you sort of keep up with the times. As it happens Voltaire, I have only one bike for the reason you stated above (the Gn's my wifes bike)
I reckon there should be a "kickstart only" rule. Modern things with leccy legs prohibited
Modern things with leccy legs prohibited Where would that leave a Norton. It has a leccy leg that does not (and was designed not to) work?
Wow...I've never seen a kick start K75...
A kick what.... it has been soooooo long since I used one of those.
