ok, not a bftp bike but any advice appreciated..im mucking around with the cbr1000f '95 that i got off murray last weekend .................................................. ........................ the bike doesnt charge and the battery is pukeru too so i thought a might be in for a reg/rec being a honda an all, but a local auto sparky whose also very bike knowledgable tested it for me and say no power coming from the alt windings, so........ wheres the bestest place to send it for rewinding? if ken cairns in hamilton is still doing them ill ph him monday morn or anybody else recomended? dont know of anyone in hawkes bay doing it. also, are the windings inside the alt cap/cover? o id just send that whole thing away? thanks in advance eddie
Guessing its a permanent magnet type , might look like this? Possibly three phase.....
Ken Cairns rewound an alternator for me in 1973 - can he still rewind and alternator 40 later ? In his sleep man, in his sleep. Last one I got rewound (Honda of course) in about 2000 was by a guy in Auckland, I can't remember who.
Probably J.Halsey rewinds, he did a stator for me a while back 7 day turn around from down here

thanks all, ill give ken cairns and maybe j.halsey a bell monday morning and see what their respective workload/turnaround/prices are um, im sure it is a permanent mag type volty..will remove it tmw, this particular alt sits behind the cylinders and is driven by chain so am guessing by pics ive seen that the alt cap holds the windings
i'd be interested to know what happened... it seems strange that all 3 phases would completely die out at once...
thats a good point psy, i thought a similar thing, aparantly the bike was stolen and missing in action for a year and a half so i guess anything coulda happend could a battery connected back to front ping the whole alt?
running it with no battery might fry the alt...?
theives have butchered the seat off at some stage, either to jumpstart or change battery presumably, i notice the batt was an odd fit and cables stretched to suit. but could battry short or similar smoke an alt completely? thought itd ice the reg/rec first? guess ill findout whats next once rewound alt comes home
a single phase of the stator could die through an internal short (due to the melting of insulation from heat) but for all 3 phases to die i think it would have to be a serious malfunction in the r/r so, i wouldn't trust that r/r with the new stator...
Went through same thing with cb750f - silly boy decided to do it myself - first replaced brushes/bushes whatever, didnt fix. then replaced alternator, didnt fix. then took it to mechanic and it was regulator and that fixed it. Got new alternator from Econohonda, brushes/bushes whatever from econohonda and I think mechanic got regulator from econohonda. May be cheaper to replace alternator rather than rewire?? Give econohonda a ring But first you need to do what I didnt do and thats isolate whether it is alternator or reg/rectifier. I think it highly unlikely it would be both. Battery cock up should blow main fuse before frying anything Hope its nothing to major and looks like my new bike will be on road this week with new WOF. Extra parts from UK cost over $300 with 1/2 that freight and I still need a few bits more to tidy it up.
the saga continues...mechanic/auto sparky guy rang me back yesterday and wanted to see the bike again, something in the wiring diagram had been troubling him, so he re-tested it a few different ways and now says the alt is fine, pumping out plenty of ohmage (sic) and thinks its def my reg/rec...glad i didnt send alt away for rewind! have new reg/rec on its way from chch now $124.99 delivered seems reasonable, hope its the doctor!
Sounds right to me - and hopefully an easy fix
thanks muzz, looking good now, btw ive ridden it a bit across town etc and goes fantastic cheers mate!
