A cafe racer was not the usual base for a racer, which is why they were cafe racers. Turn the only bike you could afford into something that looked and felt like a real race bike. Plenty of unwanted bikes were turned into cafes in the '60's....so a GT550 fits the bill for me...except it's a 4 cyl.

The one on thekneeslider.com looks good. The problem with using "ordinary" bikes as customs is that at some stage you will need to sell it to pay for the investment and pave the way for the next project. Trademe shows there is reluctance to pay any more than a nominal price. But hot rodders have always known that.
