Riding coast to coast in the USA is certainly an experience. I arrived in Santa Barbara freshly divorced with money from a house sale in the bank. I had bought the R60/5 for $1000 from a contact in the Vintage BMW Club. Arriving with my locally made fibreglass panniers, I ordered a Wixom top box but the bike had no luggage facilities. So I rode down a steel supply company and balancing 2 3m lengths of steel tube on the bike, I went to local engineering shop. The owner had convalesced in NZ having been shot up in the Pacific and loved Kiwis but had little spare room. So I sat on the pavement with a hacksaw, file and his oxy acetylene welder and designed and built a complete luggage system for the bike. It is still there. Locals were intrigued with a crazy Kiwi who wanted to ride across the States who built stuff on the footpath. So off I went following hints and whims and invitations from people I met at various BMW rallies I visited on the way. I met all sorts of people at various motorbike race meetings as well. And after a few weeks I fetched up in Boston in time for the big motorbike race meetings. I wandered around the east and through NY before wandering about the mid west. I followed the snow plough through the Tioga Pass, rode through a blizzard over the Rockies and ate lobsters in Maine. I went to several huge BMW rallies and then headed north to Canada. I explored the West and rode through desert trails to small villages. Another tank of gas and back on the road again. I rode over the Bonneville Salt flats and rode the coast road through California. After 17,000 miles and 6 months it was time to head home so I shipped the bike and flew home.
